2 FCC/Industry Canada Notice Y ou r phone may cause TV or radio interference (for example, when using a telephon e in close proximit y to receiv ing equipment). The FCC or Industry Canada can require you t o stop using your telephone if such inte rference cann ot be eliminated.
3 2. Battery ins tallation and cha rging Before you can use your new phone, you need to att ach and charge the battery . Attaching the battery To attach the batte ry , place it on the back of the ph one as shown and s lide it towa rd the top of the phone u ntil it click s into place.
4 When is char ging complete ? When the charge ind icators stop scrol ling, your phone is considered fully charged. However , a slight increase in charge ma y occur if y ou leave y our phone connecte d to the charger .
5 Important battery information • The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of t imes but it will eventually wear out. When the operating time (talk time and standby time) is noticeably shorter than normal, it is time to buy a new battery .
6 3. About the phone, keys and menu Power key Y ou can use the pow er key to: • turn the phone on or off (press and hold ) • turn the ph one’s light s on for 15 se conds • sel ect a quic k ale.
7 Clear key Use th e clear key to: • delete a charac ter to the left of the cursor • clear all cha racters from the display (press and hold) • return t o the previou s menu l evel • return fro.
8 Menu Y ou r phone’s menu allo ws yo u to easily a ccess th e many powerful features in your phone. Scrol l ba r When you use your phone’s menu, a scroll bar appears at the far right of the scree n. This ba r in dicate s where you are i n the m enu; each ta b location o n the b ar represents a different menu item.
9 Menu sho rtcuts When y ou sele ct a men u item, number s appear on the display above th e scroll bar . If you become fa miliar with th ese num bers, you can us e them a s shortc uts for accessing differen t menu items . For example, t o access the Phone se ttings m enu, you can simp ly press Men u 4 2.

11 Entering letters and numbers Curs or The cursor is a blinking vertical line tha t appears on the screen when you are ent ering text or num bers. Character s you enter appear to the right of t he cursor . Pressing the key deletes the chara cter to the left of the cursor .
12 Spec ial ch arac ters in nam es In ABC mod e you can press th e key to view the special characters below . You can use these charact ers when s aving names in your phone book.
13 Keyguard (loc king the k eypad) The Keyguard feature allows you to lock you r phon e’s keypad so th at accident al keypress es have no effect. This is han dy when y our phone is in a pocket or purse. Note: K e yguard is not a sec urity feature and will n ot prevent unauthorized use of your phon e.
14 4. Basic functions Turning the phone on or of f Press and hold the key for one second. Note: If the phone asks for a loc k code, see ‘ Lock code’ on page 56.
15 Making a call 1 Enter the area code and phone number . ( Menu chan ges to Call .) 2 Press Call and wait for the other party to answer . Volume adjustment (earpiece) To adjust the earpie ce volume , press or during a call.
16 Finding a name and number 1 Press to access your phone book. 2 Scroll to the numbe r you want . (To skip ahead quickly in the list, pre ss the n umber k ey that corre sponds to th e first letter of th e name .) 3 Press Call . For other way s to find names and n umbers, se e ‘Finding names and numbers’ on page 37.
17 5. Settings This section describes some phone settings that allow you to customize your phon e to suit your pre ferences and that you probably will not change v ery often.
18 8 Press to reach Card name , then pre ss Se lect . Enter the card name using your phone’s keypad, then press OK . Note: This procedure might not work with all callin g cards. Please look at the back of your calling card or cont act your long distance company for more information.
19 Displa ying or hiding the clock Press Menu 7 2 1 t o display the clock on the phone’s screen if it is curre ntly hidden, or vice vers a. When the clock is displayed and the time format is set to am /pm , a black square will appear next to the time indicating a.
20 Turning on confir m first with time upd ate When you turn on c onfirm first w ith the time update, your phone asks for a confirmation before it updates the internal time from t he network.
21 Beep once The phone be eps once. Silent T he p hone m ake s no s ound when you receiv e a ca ll. The icon appears at the start screen. Ringing tone Y ou r phone plays a ringin g tone when some one calls you and the ringing option is set to Ring , As cending , or Ring once .
22 Vibr ating aler t If your phone has a vibrating batt ery attached, use Menu 8 7 to set your pho ne to vibra te wh en you receive a voice cal l. If you turn vibrat ing alert on, your phone will vibra te even if its ringing option is set to S ilent .
23 Voice mailbox number If you ha ve a voic e mail subscr iption, use Menu 2 2 2 to save the voice ma ilbox number given to you by your service provider . This n umber may be up to 32 di gits l o ng. Once yo u save y our voice mailbox num ber , you can press and hold the key to di al yo ur voi ce mail box.
24 6. Emerg ency ca lls 1 If the phone is no t on, switch it on. 2 Press and hold t he key for sev eral secon ds to ready the phone for calls . 3 Ke y in the emerg enc y numb er f or your pre sent locat ion (e.g. 9 1 1 or other official emergency num ber).
25 Emergency ke y 9 Use Menu 4 1 1 to tu rn on this fe ature. Whe n this feature is on, the phone att empts to m ake an emer gency call when you: • press and hold the 9 key , or • press 9 , then press Call . Note: When Keyguard is active, the only way to make a n emerg ency c all i s t o dial the emergency nu mber , then p ress Call .
26 7. Adva nced func tions Network feature sett ing Call forwarding, call waiting, and send own num ber are network s ervices ava ilable through y our service provider . These features do not appear in your phone’s Netw ork serv ice s menu until you save the re lated featur e code(s) given to you by your service provider .
27 In-call menu When you ar e in a call , the fun ction o f the Nav i™ ke y is End . How ever , your phone has an in-call menu that allows you to perform several function s while in a c all. To use the in-call menu, press while yo u are in a ca ll, then press Options .
28 Endi ng c all s Press End or select End from the in-c all menu. Note: The wirele ss netwo rk d oes not support endin g indi vidual calls when more th an one call is in pr ogres s. Call wa iting Call wait ing is a netw ork servic e that allow s you to re ceive an incoming call when you are already in a call.
29 Call forwarding Call forwarding is a ne twork servic e that lets you forward your incoming calls to another phon e number. Check wit h your service provider for details and feature codes. Activatin g call fo rward ing Standard meth od To activate call forwarding, you mu st get the ca ll forwarding activation code from your se rvice provider .
30 Digital/analog selection Use Menu 4 4 1 to choose a mode for you r phone. Digit. & analog m eans the phone will work in digital or analogue networks. The phone trie s to find a digital network but selects an analog ue network if n o digital network is available.
31 Choosing your phone number (NAM selection) Y ou r service provider can set up y our phone to have two phone numbers that are activated in different service areas—for example, one nu mber for the Toronto area and one number for the Montreal area.
32 Menu metho d Y ou can save the feature code given by your service provider so tha t Sen d own nu mber appe ars in your phone ’s menu, and th en use Men u 4 4 5 to us e this fe ature. See ‘Network feature setting’ on page 26. This feature mu st be activat ed before each c all.
33 If you choose Ne w Search , your phone begins a new search for new pri vate and re sidenti al system s. When it f inds the best new system , it displays it. Y ou can then select it or start another search by pressing Ne xt . Note: Th e Manua l and New search fe atures ca n be us ed only when your primary phone numbe r (NAM1) is selected.
34 Automatic answer This feature is a vailable only whe n your phone is co nnected to a headset or to an approved h andsfree car kit equipped with the ignition s ense option, with th e ignition on. When a utomatic ans wer is turned on, y our phone a nswers incoming voice calls after one ring.
35 Saving touch tone string s Touch tone strings c an be used for sending an d receiving information w ith your phone . Save tou ch tone s trings the same w ay you save p hon e nu mber s (s ee page 15) . For exampl e, you ca n save your offi ce voice m ailb ox number along with yo ur password for ea sy access to your me ssages.
36 8. Phone boo k Y ou r phone allows you to save 100 phone numbers and associated names s o they are right at your fingertips for easy d ial ing . Saving names and numbers Saving a name and number is easy! Just en ter the phon e numb er , press or , then pre ss Save .
37 Not es a bou t sav ing nam es • A n ame may a ppe ar o nl y once in me mory . If you try t o save a name that already exists in memory , the phone asks if you wan t to replac e the existi ng name. • If you try to save a phone numbe r and your phone book is full, you a re given t he option to re place an ex isting entry .
38 Editing names and numbers To edit phone book entries, press Men u 1 3, scro ll to the entry yo u want to edit, the n press Edit . Edi t t he n am e an d numbe r as ne eded. Erasing names and numbers Use Menu 1 4 to erase entries from yo ur phone book.
39 9. Call log For your co nvenienc e, the call log (Menu 3) saves a lis t of phone numbers you have diale d, and can show you how much time you have spent on the phone . If you subsc ribe to the caller I D network s ervice, the c all log also records the phone number s of misse d calls and received calls.
40 Received calls If you su bscribe to the caller ID n etwork s ervice, your pho ne automatically stores the phone num bers of the 10 most recent calls you have an swe red. Use Men u 3 2 to view the re ceived calls list. To dial a nu mber , pre ss Opt ions , then choose Call .
41 Setti ng ti mer s ba ck to 0 Use Menu 3 5 4 to clear call timers. You will be requir ed to enter your se curity code . Displayi ng the cur rent cal l timer durin g calls 1 Press Men u 3 5 1. 2 Press Details . 3 Press Se lect . 4 Scroll to On , then press OK .
42 1 0. Voice messages V o ice mail is a network s ervice that allows c allers to reco rd a mes sage when y ou ca nnot be reache d. Y ou ca n then call your voic e ma ilbox and retrieve your me ssage s. Saving your voice mailbox number When you subscribe to voice mail, your service provider will give you a voice mailbox numbe r .
43 1 1. Text messages The text messag e network service a llows you to write, sen d, forward and reply t o text messages. Also, you can rece ive text mess ages from a vari ety of sourc es, suc h as a We b page set up by your service provider . Note: The av ailability of te xt messages m ay vary according to your wireless service prov ider .
44 Reply provi des a screen w here you can write a reply to a message. When you have seen the last ne w me ssage, th e indicator disappears. About the In box The Inbox holds text messages that have not been deleted or saved . U se Menu 2 1 1 to access the Inb ox at any time.
45 Erasing all text messages Use Menu 2 1 6 to a ccess the Erase all option for Te x t messa ges . Erase all allows y ou to permanently eras e all messages from one of the follow ing categories: Writing and sending text messages Y ou can write a t ext m essage u sing yo ur keyp ad.
46 Message s ettings This network feature allow s you to m ark yo ur text mes sage as urge nt, place your number wi thin the tex t message, or request a read rece ipt. This is a ne twork feature. Con tact your service provider for more information. Message settings are located in the Write new options m enu as Settings .
47 Replying to a text messa ge 1 Highlight the message that you want to reply to. 2 Press Read , then press Options . 3 Scroll to Reply , press OK . 4 Scroll to eithe r As messa ge or As e-m ail , p res s OK . 5 Send th e messag e as y ou normally would.
48 Saving a viewed business card 1 After viewing the busine ss card, press , scroll to Save , then press OK . 2 At the Name prompt, edit the nam e if you w ant to, then press OK . 3 At the Nu mber prom pt, edit the nu mber if y ou want to, then p ress OK .
49 12. E-mai l messages Y ou can use your phone to send and r eceive e-mail messages. This means y ou no longe r need to be at your computer to send o r recei ve me ssa ges. Saving e-mail addresses Y ou can add an e-mail address to a name you already have in your phone book .
50 5 When pr ompte d E-mail addr ess , enter the e-mail address. To add special characters (@ and . ), press to get to the spec ial charac ter screen. Scroll to the character you need and press Use . 6 Press Save . For more informat ion on saving, editing and e rasing phon e book entries, see ‘Phone book’ on page 36.

52 13. Extra features Alarm clock The a larm clock fea ture is based o n your phone’s internal clock and sounds an alert at a time yo u spec ify . Setti ng th e alar m cloc k Use Menu 7 1 to turn the alarm clock on or off.
53 • T o shut off the alarm, pres s any key except Snoo ze . The phone displays K eep the phone o n? Press Ye s to keep it on or to switch it off. •I f y o u p r e s s Sn ooze , the phone turn s itself off for 10 minutes , then the alarm so unds again.
54 Games Use Menu 6 to ch allenge y ourself or a friend to the three fun games in your phone. To pause a game, press . T o resume, c hoose Cont inue . Warning! Do not switch on the phon e to use this func tion when wireless phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger .
55 Prepaid service Y ou r service provide r may offer prep aid service. Th is means that you can sign up to become a prepaid customer and obtain airtime by purchasing a Prepaid card which contains a replenish ment value. Cont act your servi ce provider for details.
56 14. Security featu res Access codes overview Access codes consist o f the lo ck cod e and s ecurity code. When you get you r phone, you should change these codes from their defaults, write down the ne w codes, and keep them in a safe place aw ay from the phone.
57 Rest rict ing in co ming c alls Choose R estr ict inco ming c alls to prev ent your phone from receiving incom ing calls. Ent er your securit y code, th en press OK .
58 3 If you wa nt, give a name o f up to 1 0 charac ters to the restriction (such as Joey , Long dist , or 1-800 #s ), th en press OK . The entry is added to your list of restricted numbers. Allow ing call s to a numb er on th e list If you later de cide to allow calls to a restri cted n umber , press Se lect to see your list of n umbers.
59 Saving the unlocked phone number Use Menu 4 3 2 2 to save a numbe r that may be calle d even when y our phone is locked. You will be required to enter th e lock code . Callin g the unlocked phon e number Press or , or manually enter the num ber exactly as it is saved, then press Call .
60 15. Accessori es An ex ten sive rang e of acces sori es is available fo r your phon e. Y ou can select the accessories that best suit your sp ecific co mmunica tion need s. 61 Changing covers When cha nging co vers, do not u se the phone’s an tenna a s leverage! 1 Switch off the powe r and disconnect the phone from the charger or any other device. 2 Using a coin, de press the coloured tab on the top of the phone and slide the colour cover forward.

64 ACP-7U Standard Tra vel Cha rger Use this durable and econom ical charger to charge a ll ba ttery o ption s. Plug the charger in to a wall outlet and connect the co nnector to the bottom of your ph one. Check the charging status on the phone display .
65 LCH-9 Ra pid Cigarette Lig h ter Ch arger The multivoltage Rapid Cigarette Lig hter Charger allows yo u to ch arge your phone when y ou travel . The small charger's functional design fits well w ith most car lighters and in teriors. Charging tim es are t he same as for t he Rapid T ravel Charger ACP-9U.
66 When the phone is charging, no lights are di splayed on the stand; check the ch arging status of the phon e battery on the phone display . Charging m oves to th e rear s lot once the fron t battery is 1 0 0% charged. When the spare battery is ch arging, check the stat us indicator on the left sid e of the cha rging stan d.
67 16. Refer ence in formation Important safety information Traffic safety Do not use a hand-held telephone while driving a vehicle. If using a hand-held phone park the vehicle before conversing. Always secure the phone in its holder; do not place the phone on the pas s enger seat or where it can break loose in a collision or sudden stop.
