1 1. For your safety Read these simple guidelines before using your phone. Failure to comply with thes e guidelines may be dangerous or illegal. Road Sa fety Come s First Don’t use a hand-held phone while driving; park the vehicle fir st. Switch O ff In Ho spitals Follow any regulations or rules.
2 FCC/Industry Canada Notice Y our phone may cause TV or radio interference (for examp le, when using a telephone in c lose proximity to receiving equipment). The FCC or Industry Canada can require you to stop using your telephone if such interfe rence cannot be eliminated.
3 2. Battery installation & charging Before you can use your new phone, you need to attach and charge the battery . Attaching the battery To attach the batte ry , place it on the back of the ph one as shown and s lide it toward t he top of the phone until it clicks into place.
4 Prob lems c hargin g If your phone displays Not chargi ng , charging is suspended. Check t hat the ba ttery is co nnected to a n approved charging device. If the battery is very hot or c old, wait for a while; ch arging will aut omatically resu me after the batte ry is restored to its normal operating s tate.
5 1 Press and hold the button at the top of the battery . 2 Slide the batte ry toward the bott om of the phon e. 3 Lift the battery off the phone. Important battery information • The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times but it will eventually wear out.

Abou t the phone, ke ys & menu Power key Y ou can use the pow er key to: • turn the phone on or off (press and hold ) • turn the ph one’s lights on for 1 5 seconds • sel ect a quick al ert set ting (see pa ge 25) (if K eyguard is off and the phon e is not connected t o a headset or handsfree car kit.
7 Scroll keys The scroll key s are locate d to the right of the Navi™ ke y . Use the scroll ke ys to: • browse me nus • move the cursor (see page 1 1) to th e right or the left • adjust the e .
8 External antenna jack At the back of the phone, below the an tenna, there is a connector for an external antenna. The con nector may be protected by a rubber c ap. Remove the cap before connecting an external antenna. Afte r removing the antenna, replac e the cap.
9 Menu sho rtcuts When you select a menu item, numb ers appear on the screen above the scroll bar . I f you become familiar with these numbers , you can use them as shortcuts for acc essing different men u items. For example, to access the Phon e se ttin gs menu, you can simply pre ss Menu 4 2.

11 Entering letters and numbers Curs or The cu rsor is a blinking vertical line that appears on the scre en when y ou are enteri ng text or nu mbers. Ch aracters you enter appear to the righ t of the cursor . Press to delete th e character to the left of the cursor .
12 Changi ng letter case Press the key (the Case key , shown on the phone diagram on this guide’s inside front cover) to switch between upper- and low er-case letters.
13 Keyguard (loc king the keypa d) Using the Keyguard feature you can “lock” your pho ne’s ke ypad so that accident al keypresse s have no effect. This is han dy when your ph one is in a pocket or purse. Note: K eyguard is n ot a security feature and will n ot prevent unauthorized use of your phon e.
14 Notes about K eyguard • When Keyguard is on, the on ly way to answer a call is to press Answer . Onc e the call is t erminated, keyg uard is reactivate d. • When Keyguard is on, press the power ke y briefly to turn your phone’s lights on for fifteen s econds.
15 4. Basic functions Turning the phone on Press and hold for one second. Note: Pressing briefly turns your phone’s lights on for fifteen seconds. If the phone asks for a lock code, see ‘Lock code’ on page 5 1. If the phone asks for a security code, see ‘ Security code’ on page 5 1.
16 Checking signal strength Y our phone operates on radio w aves. Radio signal coverage is maintain ed by a wireless ne twork, and the quality of calls on your phone depends on the strength of the wireless radio sig nal.
17 Ending a call Press End . Last number redial The las t 1 0 number s you dialed ar e stored i n the diale d calls list. Use this l ist to redial a numbe r you have calle d recently . 1 From the Ready screen, press to access the dialed calls list. 2 Scroll to the d esired num ber .
18 Silencing an incoming call To silence the ringin g of the incoming call, press briefly . You can still answer the call if Call or th e na me of the person is still flashing on y our screen.
19 5. Phone boo k For conveni ent and easy dialing, you c an save 100 phone numbers and associat ed names in your phone. Saving names and numbers Saving a name and num ber is easy! Just en ter the phon e number, press or , then press Save . Enter a name if you wi sh, then press OK .
20 Finding names and numbers There are several way s to find na mes and numbe rs in your phone book. From the Ready screen Press to access your phone book, then scroll to the desired nam e/number . Tip: Yo u can al so pres s the num ber key t hat corresponds to th e first letter of the n ame.
21 Erasing names and numbers Use Menu 1 6 to erase entries from your phone book. One by one lets yo u select one e ntry at a time to be erased. Erase all erases your entire phone book (you are required to enter your security code first). Finding your own number Use Menu 1 7 t o view your phon e’s number .
22 6. Settings This section describes some phone settings that allow you to customize your phon e to suit your preferences and that you probably won’t change v ery often. Automatic redial Use Menu 4 1 2 to turn this fea ture on or off. W hen this feature is on and the wireless network is busy , your phone redials a number u p to three times.
23 Select ing ti me form at Use Menu 7 2 3 to s et the clock’s format to am/pm or 24-ho ur . Displa ying or hiding the cloc k Press Menu 7 2 1 t o display the clock on the phone ’s screen if it is curre ntly hidden, or vice versa.
24 Using the qu ick alert settings feature (see page 25) you can select a fixed combination of t hese settings to s uit your current en vironment. Ringin g opti on Use Menu 8 1 to tell your phone how to notify you that you have a c all. Note : If yo u choose Beep once or Sile nt , the alarm clock only sounds a quiet beep.
25 Mess age a lert tone Use Menu 8 4 to ch oose the ton e pla yed wh en you r ecei ve a text message. Scroll to a tone to hear how it sounds. Keypad tones Use Menu 8 5 to adjust the v olume of the tones your phone makes wh en you press i ts keys . Warnin g and g ame tone s Use Menu 8 6 to turn y our phone’s warning and game tones on or off.

Silent A ll sound is t urned off in your pho ne. The icon appears on the Ready screen. Quiet Your phone beeps once when you receive a call or text m essage.
27 Welcome note Use Menu 2 3 to create or change the welcome note for y our phone. This note is displayed briefly eac h time you turn on y our phone. It can be you r name, a reminder , etc. To sa ve the note, pre ss Options , th en Save . T o erase t he note, press Options , t hen Erase .
28 7. Emerg ency calls 1 If the phone is no t on, switch it on. 2 Press and hold for several seconds to ready the phone for calls. 3 Ke y in th e emerge ncy numbe r for y our pre sent loc ation (e.g. 9 1 1 or other official emergency number). Em ergency numbers va ry by location.
29 Emergency ke y 9 Use Menu 4 1 1 to turn on this feature. W hen this feature is on, the ph one attempts to make an em ergency c all when you: • press and hold the 9 key , or • press 9 , then press Call . Note: When Keyguard is active , the only way to make an emerg ency cal l is t o dial t he emer gency nu mber , then pre ss Call .
30 8. Adva nced function s Network feature sett ing Call forwardin g, call waiting, and send own num ber are network s ervices available through your serv ice provider . Thes e features do not appe ar in your p hone’s Network serv ices menu until you save the re lated feature code(s) given t o you by yo ur service provider .
31 In-call menu When yo u are in a single call, the Na vi™ key funct ion is End . Howeve r , you can us e your phone’s in-c all menu to perform several fun ctions while in a call. To access th e in-call menu, press to chan ge the N avi™ key func tion to Opt ions , then p ress Options .
32 Receiv ing a new c all If you are in a call a nd you receive a call, press Answer . The first call is au tomatically put on hold. To swap betwe en the calls, press Flash .
33 Calling cards If you wish to use a calling card for long dista nce calls, y ou must first s ave your calling card informa tion into your phone. Y our phon e can save information abou t four calling cards . Saving calling ca rd informatio n 1 Press Menu 4 1 3.
34 6 Enter the a ccess numbe r (usually t he 1-800 n umber listed on the back of the calling card), then press OK . 7 Enter your card numb er and/or PIN, then press OK . Y our phone will di splay Save ch ang es? Pres s OK . 8 Press to reach Card name , th en press Select .
35 Activatin g call for warding Standard method To activate call forwarding, you must get th e call forwarding activation code from your se rvice provider . 1 Dial the code for act ivating call forwarding followed by the phone number to w hich you w ant to forward your calls.
36 1-touch dialing 1-touch dialing le ts you make phone calls quick ly and easily with the touch of a button. Once you have assigned a phone numb er to a number key ( 2 thro ugh 8) , you c an pre ss and hold that k ey to dial the nu mber . (You can also p ress and hold the num ber key an d then pres s Call .
37 Choosing your phone number (NAM selection) Y our servic e provider can set up your ph one to have two phone numbers that are activated in different servic e areas —for ex ample, one numb er for the D allas ar ea and on e number for the C hicago area.
38 Thi s featu re mus t be act ivate d befo re each call; you cann ot permanently turn it on or off. Ye s displays your number to the person you are calling. No prevents your num ber from being sh own to the person you are calling. NAM update Note: This feature may not be available in all systems.
39 System selection Using system select ion , you can choose how your ph one selects a n etwork to use . This feature is Menu 5 in you r phone. The de fault is Automatic , which me ans your phone automat ically sear ches for netw orks availabl e to you and chooses the appropriate one .
40 Off turns off touch tones. N o tones ar e sent whe n you pr ess the keys . Setting a utomatic to uch tone lengt h Use Menu 4 2 1 2 to set the len gth of touch ton es sent automatically by the phone to Sh ort (one te nth of a second) or Long (hal f a second).
41 9. Call log For your c onvenienc e, the call log (Menu 3 ) saves a lis t of phone numbers you have diale d, and can show you approximately how mu ch time you have spent on the phone. If you subscribe to the calle r ID netwo rk service, the call log also records the phone num bers of missed calls and received calls.
42 Viewing the missed c alls list at a ny time Use Menu 3 1 to view the missed c alls list at any tim e. To dial a number , press O ptions , then choose Call . Received calls If you su bscribe to the caller ID netwo rk service, your phone automati cally stores the phone nu mbers of the 1 0 most rece nt cal ls you’v e answer ed.
43 Viewin g call ti mers Use Menu 3 5 to v iew the various c all timer s. Last call displays the duration of the last call, or current call if applicable. All cal ls displays the duration of all calls since th e timers were last reset. Life ti mer displays th e duration of a ll calls for the life of your phone and cann ot be reset.
44 1 0 . Voice messages V oice mail is a network service that allows callers to record a message when you c annot be reached. Y ou can then call your voic e mailbox and retrieve your mess ages. Saving your voice mailbox number When you subscribe to voice mail, your service provider gives you a voice mailbox nu mber .
45 1 When your phone notifies you that you hav e a new voice message, press Liste n . Your phone dials your voice mailbox number , and your password displays. 2 When your phone notifie s you that y ou’re able to listen to your messa ges, press Send .
46 1 1. Text messages With the text me ssage net work ser vice yo u can rec eive te xt messages from a variety of sources, such as another wireless phone or a Web site set up by y our service provider .
47 When you’ ve seen th e last new me ssage, the indica tor disappears. About the In box The Inbox holds text messages that have not bee n deleted or saved . Use Menu 2 1 1 to access the In box at a ny time (you are required to en ter your security code first).
48 12. Extra features Alarm clock The alarm clock feature sounds an alert at a ti me you sp ecify . Setti ng the alarm cloc k Use Menu 7 1 to turn the alarm clock on or off. Note that when you’ re entering th e alarm tim e, use two digits for both hours and m inutes (for example, enter 1:30 as 0 130 ).
49 • T o shut off the alarm, press any k ey except Snooze . The phone displays Keep th e phone on? . Press Ye s to keep it on or to switch it off. •I f y o u p r e s s Snooze , the ph one turns itself off for te n minutes , then the alarm sounds again .
50 Logic Find the secret combin ation of figures in a column. Possible figur es are shown at the top of t he screen. P ress the 5 k ey repeatedly to select a figure and the 2, 4, and 8 k eys to move the curs or . On ce yo u thi nk yo u ha ve th e rig ht combination , press .
51 13. Security featu res Access codes overview Access cod es consist of the lock code and security c ode. When you get you r phon e, you sho uld chan ge these co des from their defaults, w rite down the new codes, and keep them in a safe place away from t he phone.
52 Rest rictin g inco ming c alls Y ou can block all incoming calls or cre ate a list of incoming numbers from which you don’t want to re ceive calls. To block all incomin g calls, ente r your security code, scroll to Selec t and press OK , then press Mark .
53 The entry is added to your list of restricted num bers. Y our phon e can save up to 15 restric ted incoming numbers. Once you enter 15 restricted numbe rs, the Add restrictio n option is removed from th e menu. This option is available aga in once you delete one or more phone numbers from the restricted list.
54 Addin g number s to the re stricte d outgoing calls lis t A call restric tion can consist of a n entire phone nu mber , an area code , etc. When th e restrictio n is selecte d, calls can not be made to any nu mber beginning with t hose digits. For examp le, enter ing 214555 1234 block s calls to (2 14) 555 - 1234 only .
55 Allow ing call s to a num ber on th e list If you later de cide to allow calls to a restricted number , scroll to Sele ct an d press OK . You can now see y our list of numbers. Press Unmark to remov e the restriction. (The nu mber remains in the list so t hat you can restrict it again late r by pressing Mark .
56 14. Accessori es An ex tensiv e ran ge of a ccesso ries is available for you r phone. You can se lect the accessori es that b est suit your s pecific communi cation needs. For av ailability , s ee your local authorized Nokia dealer . A few practical rules for accessory operation: • Keep accessories out of small children's re ach.
57 Changing covers When chan ging covers, don’t use the phone’s ante nna as leverage! 1 Switch off the powe r and disconnect the phon e from the cha rger or any other device. 2 Using a coin, de press the colored tab on the top of the ph one and slide t he color cover forward.
58 5 Place the bot tom of the cover against the bottom of the phone. Make sure all three set s of plastic tabs line up with their resp ective slot s, as s hown a t left .
