11 Basic Operations Introduction The Rotary Multi Selector The rotary multi selector is made up of the rotating ring and the d button. When selecting menus or pi ctures, you can either press the rotating ring up, down, left, or right, or rotate it.

14 First Steps First Steps Inserting the Battery The camera uses a Rechargeable Li-ion Ba ttery EN-EL8 (supplied). Charge the battery before first use or when the battery is running low ( c 16) . 1 Open the battery-chamber/memory car d slot cover. 2 Insert the batte ry.
15 Inserting the Battery First Steps Removing the Battery Turn the camera off befo re removing the battery. To eject the battery, op en the battery-chamber/ memory card slot cover a nd slide the battery latch in the dir ection sh own 1 . The battery can then be removed by hand 2 .
16 First Steps Charging the Battery Insert the battery and charge it with th e AC Adapter EH-64 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low. 1 Connect the power ca ble and AC adapter 1 . 2 Turn of f the came ra. If the power-on lamp (gre en) is lit, press the power switch to turn off the camera.

25 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode j Digital Zoom Unlike optical zoom, data from the camera’s image sensor are proc essed digitally wit h digital zoom. Details visible at maximum optical zoom ar e simply enlarged, producing a slightly “grainy” image.
26 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 3 Focus and Shoot 1 Press the shutter-re lease button half way. By default, the camera au tomatically fo cuses on the subject i n the center focus area. When the sub ject is in focus, t he focus are a and focus indicator ( p ) glow green.

30 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the Flash The flash has a range of about 0.3–6 m (1–19 ft. 8.0 in.) when the camera is zoomed out all the way. With maximum optical zoom appl ied, the range is about 0.3–4 m (1–13 ft. 1.5 in.) (when [ISO sensitivity] is set to [Auto]) .

33 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Macro (Close-up) Mode Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as close as 4 cm (1.6 i n.). Note that the flash may be unable to light entire subject at distances of less than 30 cm (1 1.8 in.). 1 Press L (macro mode).
