5 1 A quick look P ack age con tents Y our ADSL router NO TES: • If any of the items is damaged or missing , contact ASUS for technical inquiries and suppor t.
6 1 Po wer LED Off : No power . On: Device is ready . Flashing slow: Rescue mode Flashing quick: WPS is processing. 2 ADSL LED Solid light: ADSL link is established. Flashing: No ADSL link or unable to establish ADSL link. 3 W AN LED Off : No power or no physical connection.

8 2 Crea ting your netw ork P ositioning your rout er F or the best wireless signal transmission between the ADSL router and the network devices connected to it , ensure that you: • Place the ADSL rout er in a centralized area for a maximum wireless co verage f or the network devices.
9 Wha t you need T o set up your network, you need one or two computers that meet the following sy stem requirements: • Ethernet RJ-45 (LAN) por t (10Base-T/100Base-T X) • IEEE 802.
10 C onnec ting your devic es Wired c onnec tion IMPORT ANT! • Use wired connection in setting up your ADSL rout er to avoid possible setup problems due to wireless unc er tainty . • Before setting up y our DSL-N12U, do the following: • Disconnect the cables/wires from your existing modem setup .
11 Before y ou proceed Disable the pro x y ser ver , if enabled . Windo ws ® 7 1. Click Start > Internet Explorer to launch the brow ser . 2. Click T ools > Internet options > C onnections tab > L AN settings . NO TE: Before configuring y our DSL-N12U, do the steps described in this section for your host computer and network clients.
12 MA C OS 1. F rom your Safari browser , click S afari > Pref erences > Adv anced > Change Settings... 2. F rom the Network screen, deselect FTP Pro x y and W eb Pro x y (HT TP) . 3. Cllick Apply No w when done. NO TE: Refer to y our browser's help feature f or details on disabling the proxy server .
13 3. T o obtain the IPv4 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IP address automatically . T o obtain the IPv6 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IPv6 address automatically . 4. Click OK when done. Set the T CP/IP settings to automatically obtain an IP address.
14 MA C OS 1. Click the Apple icon located on the top left of your screen. 2. Click Sy stem Pref erences > Network > C onfigure ... 3. F rom the TCP/IP tab , select Using DHCP in the C onfigure IPv4 dropdown list. 4. Cllick Apply No w when done.
15 1. Before starting ADSL setting procedure , ensure that the ADSL indicator on DSL-N12U front panel bec omes solid. 2. Launch your w eb browser . The QIS web page appears automatically and starts detec ting your connection type, VPI/ VCI value and encapsula tion mode.
16 3. Key in the user name and password . Click Apply . NO TES: • The PPP oE Internet connection t ype is used in this setup case. The setup screen v ar ies with differen t Internet connection types. • Obtain the required information such as the user name and password from y our Internet Ser vice Pro vider (ISP).
17 4. The Internet c onnection setup is completed. • Click G oing to Internet t o sur f the Internet. • Click Simple Wireless Security Setup to configure the basic security settings including the SSID , authentication, and encr yption methods for the ADSL rout er .
18 3 C onfiguring via the web GUI Logging int o the web GUI Y our ASUS ADSL router comes with an intuitiv e web graphics user interface (GUI) that allows you to easily c onfigure its various featur es through a web bro wser such as Internet Explorer , F irefo x, Safari, or G oogle Chrome.
19 NO TES : • F or your network clients, ensure that you set the T CP/IP settings to obtain IP addresses automatically , disable the proxy server settings, disable the dial-up settings, and cancel the dial-up connection. • F or more details, refer to the section Before you pr o ceed in this user manual.
20 Using Wi-F i Protected Setup ( WPS) WPS ( Wi-Fi P rotected Setup) allows you to set up a secure and protected wireless network easily NO TES: • Ensure that you use a wir eless L AN adapter with WPS function on your network clients .
21 T o use WPS: 1. In the WPS field, click the red button to launch the WPS Push Button Configur ation. NO TE: Y ou may also press the WPS button on your ADSL router to launch the WPS Push Butt on Configuration. 2. F ollow the onscreen instructions to complete the wireless network setup .
22 Using the Netw ork Map Network Map allows you t o view the status and configure the connection settings of the Internet, system, and clients in your network. It enables you to quick ly set up your Wide Area Network ( W AN) using the Quick Internet Setup (QIS) fea ture.
23 Creating multiple SSID pr ofiles The wireless rout er allows you to creat e multiple SSID profiles that meet various working scenarios. T ocreateanSSIDprole: 1. In the SSID field , click A dd . 2. Configur e the profile settings, then click Add .
24 Managing bandwidth with EzQoS EzQoS Bandwidth Management enables you to set the bandwidth priority and manage the net work traffic . T osetupthebandwidthpriority: 1. Click EzQoS Bandwidth Management from the naviga tion menu at the left side of your screen.
25 Upgrading the firmw are NO TE: Download the latest firmware fr om the ASUS website at http://www .asus.com. T oupgradethermware: 1. Click Adv anced Setting > Administr ation from the na vigation menu at the left side of your screen.
26 Restoring/Sa ving/Uploading settings T o restore/sav e/upload the settings: 1. Click Adv anced Setting from the navigation menu a t the lef t side of your screen.
27 4 U sing the utilities NO TES: • Install the ADSL router's utilities from the bundled support CD . • If Autorun is disabled , run setup .ex e from the root directory of the suppor t CD . Installing the utilities T oinstalltheutilities: 1.
28 3. Click Next to accept the default destination folder or click Brow se to specify another path. 4. Click Next to accept the default pr ogram folder or enter another name.
29 Devic e D isco very Device Discov er y is an ASUS WLAN utility that detects an ASUS Wireless ADSL Router and enables you t o configure the device. T olaunchtheDeviceDiscoveryutility: • Fr om your computer ’ s desktop , click Start > All Programs > ASUS Utility > DSL-N12U Wireless ADSL Router > Devic e Disco very .
30 F irmware Restor ation F ir mware Restor ation is used on an ASUS ADSL router that failed during its firmware upgrading process . It uploads the firmware that you specify . The process takes about three t o four minutes . T olaunchtherescuemodeandusetheFirmware Restorationutility: 1.
31 NO TE : This is not a firmwar e upgrade utility and cannot be used on a working ASUS ADSL router . Normal firmware upgrades must be done through the web in ter face. Refer to Chapter 3: C onfiguring via the web GUI for more details. 5. Specify a firmware file , then click Upload .
32 NO TES : • When running WPS, the Internet connection pauses briefly then reestablishes the connection. • If the WPS button is pushed without running the ADSL Setting Wizard, the Po wer LED indicator flashes and Internet connection pauses briefly and then reestablishes the connection.
33 4. Key in desired network name or SSID (service set identifier). When done , click Next . 5. Create and key in a passphrase c onsisting of 8-63 charac ters or use the automatically generat ed passphrase then click Next . A passphrase is a sentence , phrase, or sequence of alpha- numeric characters used to generate a security key .
34 NO TE: F or more details on adding devices to the network using a USB flash drive , refer t o the sec tion Adding network devices using a USB flash dr ive on the next page. 6. When finished , click S av e or print settings for future r eferenc e or Sav e settings to a USB flash drive to add other devic es to the network.
35 8. F or Internet ( W AN) settings, refer to section Using the Quick Internet Setup (QIS) in Chapter 2 of this manual. I f you are a Russian user , follow the onscreen instructions to finish the ADSL Internet ( W AN) settings.
36 Adding netw ork devices using a USB flash driv e With the ADSL Setting Wizard, you can add devices to your network using a USB flash drive. T oaddnetworkdevicesusingaUSBashdrive: 1. In the ADSL Setting Wizard, click S a ve settings t o a USB flash driv e .
37 3. Unplug the USB flash drive from y our computer then inser t it to the other computer tha t you want t o add to your wireless network. 4. Locat e S etupWireless .exe from the USB driv e, and double-click to run it. Click Y es to add the computer to the wir eless net work.
38 Setting up your networ k printer Use the Network P r inter Setup utility to set up a USB printer on your ADSL rout er and allow network clients to acc ess the USB printer . NO TES: • T o check if your USB printer is compatible with your ASUS ADSL router , ref er to the Plug-n-Share Disk Suppor t List at http://ev ent.
39 2. F ollow the onscreen instructions to set up your hardwar e, then click Next . 3. W ait for a few minut es for the initial setup to finish. Click Next .

42 5 T roubleshooting NO TE : If you encounter problems that ar e not mentioned in this chapter , contact the ASUS T echnical Support. T roubleshooting Icannotaccessawebbrowserforconguringtherouter . • Delete the cookies and files in your web browser .
43 Cannot find the rout er: • Press the Reset button at the r ear panel for more than five seconds. • Check the setting in the wireless adapter such as SSID and encr yption settings. • Check if the wireless indicator on the front panel is off .
44 Ifthe ADSL“LINK”lightblinkscontinuouslyorstaysoff, Internetaccessisnotpossible-theRouterisunableto establishaconnectionwiththe ADSLnetwork. • Ensure that all your cables are all pr operly connected .
45 ASUS DDNS Ser vice DSL-N12U suppor ts the ASUS DDNS ser vice. When exchanging devices at the service center , if you have r egistered the ASUS DDNS ser vice and want to keep the original domain name , data transf er is a must. V isit your local service center for mor e information.
46 3. I hav e registered a domain name befor e and it has been working well un til my friends told me that the y could not access m y domain name. Check the following: 1. The internet is working well. 2. The DNS ser ver is working well. 3. The last time you updated the domain name.
