7 Multir oom Capability Y ou can use two speaker systems with this A V receiver —a surround-sound speak er system (up to 7.1 channels) in your main listening room, a stereo speaker system in a seco nd room, or Zone 2, as we call it. An d, you can select a differ ent audio source for each room.

12 Remote Contr oller Notes: • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’ t mix new and old batteries or dif ferent types of batteries. • If you intend not to use th e remote controller for a long time, remove the batteries to prevent damage from leakage or corrosion.

15 Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Config uration For 7.1-channel surround-s ound playback, you need se ven speakers and a po wered subwoofer . The following table indicate s the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you hav e.
16 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Connecting a P o wered Subw oofer Using a suitable cable, conne ct the A V receiv er’ s PRE OUT : SUBWOOFER to an inp ut on your powered sub- woofer , as sho wn. If your su bwoofer is unpo wered and you’ re using an e xternal am plif ier , connect the PRE OUT : SUBWOOFER to an inp ut on the amp.
17 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued The following illustration shows which speaker should be connec ted to each pair of terminal s. If you’ re using only one surround back speaker , connect it to the left (L) SURR B A CK SPEAKERS terminals.
18 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued The FR ONT L/R and SURR B A CK L/R terminal posts can be used with front speakers and surround back speakers respecti v ely , or bi-amped to prov ide separate tweeter and woofer feeds fo r a pair of front speakers that support bi-amping, providing improv ed bass and treble performance.
19 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop ante nna, and how to connect commercially a v ailable outdoor FM and AM an tennas. The A V Receiv er won’t pick up any radio signals with- out any antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
20 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Connecting an Outdoo r FM Antenna If you cannot achie ve good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a co mmercially a vailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obta i ned when installed in an attic or loft.
21 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued • Before making an y A V conne ctions, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don’ t connect the power cord until you’ ve completed and double-checked all A V connections.
22 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demands of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Mu ltimedia Interface) is a new digital interface standard for connect ing TVs, projectors, D VD/BD players, set-top boxes, and other video components.
23 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Making HDMI Connections ■ Video Signals Digital video signals receiv ed by the HDMI IN jacks are normally output b y the HDMI OUT for display on your TV . Composite video and component video sources can be upcon v erted for th e HDMI output.
24 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued By connecting both the audio and video out puts of your D VD/BD player and other A V components to the A V receiv er, you can select both the audio a nd video simultaneously simply by selecting the appropriate input source on the A V receiv er.

38 Firs t Time Setup This section explains the se ttings that you need to make before using the A V receiv er for the v ery first time. Carry out the settings for th e A V rece iv er by using the Onscreen Setup Menu. The settings of the A V receiv er can be changed using the Display .
39 First Time Setup —Continued HDMI Input Setup If you connect a video component to HDMI IN, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD/BD player to HDMI IN1, you must assign HDMI IN1 to th e D VD/BD input selector .
40 First Time Setup —Continued Component Video Setup If you connect to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN, you must assign it to an input select or . For example, if you connect your D VD/BD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2, you should assign it to the D VD/BD input selector .
41 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a component to a digital input jack, you must assign that jack to an i nput selector . For example, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN1 jack, you should assign that jack to the CD input selector .
42 First Time Setup —Continued If you’ v e connected your front sp eakers to the FR ONT L/R and SURR B A CK L/R termin al posts for bi-amping, you must change the “Speaker T ype” setting. For hookup information, see “Bi- ampi ng the Front Speakers” on page 18.
43 First Time Setup —Continued For FM/AM tuning to work properly , you must specify the FM/AM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting is cha nged, all radi o presets are deleted. Note: This procedure can also be performed on the A V recei ver by using its [SETUP] bu tton, arrow b uttons, and [ENTER] button.
44 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect an u -capable Onk yo RI Dock t o the TV/T APE IN, GAME IN or VCR/D VR IN jacks, for u to work properly , you must change this setting.
45 First Time Setup —Continued W ith the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey 2EQ au tomatically determine s the number of speakers con nected, their size for purposes of bass management, optimum crosso v er frequenci es to the subwoofer (if present), and di stances from the primary listening position.
46 First Time Setup —Continued Using A udyss ey 2EQ™ The onscreen setup menus appear only on a TV that is connected to the HDMI OUT. If your TV is connected to the MONITOR OUT V or the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT, use the A V receiv er’ s display when changing settings.
47 First Time Setup —Continued • Mak e the room as q uiet as possible. Background noise can disrupt the room measurement s. Close windows, silence cell phones, televisions, radios , air conditioners, fluorescent lights, home appliances, light dimmers, or other devices.
48 First Time Setup —Continued Notes: • When the room co rrection and speaker setup is complete, the “Equalizer Sett ings” (page 69) will be set to “Audyssey” and the “Dynamic EQ” (page 71) will be set to “On”.
49 First Time Setup —Continued ❏ Speaker matching error! The number of speakers detected on the second or third measurement wa s different to the number detected on the first measurement. Make sure speakers that cannot be detected are connected property .
50 Basic Operations This section explains ho w to select the input source (i.e., the A V compone nt that you want to listen to or watch). Selecting the Input Sour ce 1 Use the A V receiv er’ s input select or b uttons to select the input sour ce.
51 Basic Operations —Continued Y ou can adjust the bass and treble for the front speakers, except when the Direct li stening mode is selected. ■ Bass Y ou can boost or cut lo w-fre quency sounds output by the front speakers from –10 dB to +10 dB in 2 dB steps.
52 Basic Oper ations —Continued Y ou can tempor arily mute the output of the A V receiv er. W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V recei ver to turn off automatically after a specif ied period. If you need to cancel the sleep timer, press the [SLEEP] button repe atedly until the SL EEP indicator disappears.
53 Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can st ore your fav orite stations as presets for quick selectio n. Listening to the Radio T uning into Rad io Stations ■ A uto T uning Mode When tuned into a station, the TUNED indicator appears.
54 Listening to the Radio —Continued Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fa vorite AM/FM radio stations as presets. Note: Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identif ication (see page 76). Its name is di splayed instead of the band and frequency .
55 UP-A1 series Doc k f or iP od W ith the UP-A1 series Dock, you can easi ly play the music, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound. Y ou can use the A V recei ver’ s remote controller to operate your iPod.

64 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The A V recei ver’ s listening mod es can transform your listening room into a movie th eater or concert hall, with high fidelity and stunning surround sound. Direct In this mode, audio from the input source is output directly with minima l proces sing, providing high-f idel- ity reproduction.
65 Using the Listening Modes —Continued DTS Neo:6 This mode expands an y 2-ch annel source for up to 7.1- channel playback. It uses se v en full-bandwidth channels of matrix decoding for matrix-encoded material, provid- ing a ve ry natural and seamless surround sound e xperi- ence that fully en v elops the listener .
66 Adv a nced Setup The onscreen setup menus appear on the connected TV and pr ovide a con venient w ay to change the A V recei ver’ s var ious settings. Se ttings are or ganized into nine categories on the main menu , most containing a submenu . Onscreen Setup Menus 1.

69 Adv anced Setup —Continued Level calibration This setting is set aut omatically by the Audyssey 2EQ™ Room Correction and Speaker Setup function (see page 45). Here you can adjust the le vel of each speak er with the built-in test tone so that the v olume of each speaker is the same at the li sten ing position.

71 Adv anced Setup —Continued DTS Setting Neo:6 Music Center Image 0 to 5 (default: 2) The DTS Neo:6 Music listening mode creates 6-channel surround sound fro m 2-channel stereo sources. W ith this setting, you can specify by ho w much the front left and right channel output is a ttenuated in order to create the center channel.

Note: When the “Audio TV Out” setting is set to “On” (page 78), the [A UDIO] button is disabled. 73 Adv anced Setup —Continued CinemaFIL TER W ith the CinemaFIL TER, you can soften o verly bright movi e soundtracks, which are typi cally mixed for reproduction in a movie theater .
74 Adv anced Setup —Continued Y ou can assign a def ault list ening mode to each input source that will be selected aut omatically when you select each input source. For example, you can set the default listening mode to be used with Dolby Digital input signals.
75 Adv anced Setup —Continued This section explains items on the “Source Setup” menu. Items can be set individuall y for each input selector . IntelliV olume W ith IntelliV olume, you can se t the input lev el for each input selector indivi d ually .
76 Adv anced Setup —Continued Name Edit Y ou can enter a custom name for each indi vidual input selector and radio preset fo r easy identification. When entered, the custom nam e will appear on the display . The custom name is edited using the character input screen.
77 Adv anced Setup —Continued This section explains the items on the “M iscellaneous” menu. Note: This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiver by using its [SETUP] b utton, arrow b uttons, and [ENTER] button. Remote ID ■ Remote ID When sev eral Onkyo components are used in the same room, their remote ID co des may ov erlap.
79 Adv anced Setup —Continued ■ x.v .Color If your HDMI source and HDMI-compatib le TV both support the “x.v .Color”, you can enable “x.v .Color” on the A V recei ver with this setting. Notes: • If the color is unnatural whe n “x.v .Color” is set to “Enable”, change the setting to “Disable” .
80 Adv anced Setup —Continued W ith this preference, you ca n protect your settings b y locking the setup menus. Y ou can change v arious settings of the upcon ve rted video signal.
81 Adv anced Setup —Continued ■ Zoom Mode (Zoom) This setting det ermines the aspect rati o that will be used for 480i and 480p input signals when the y are output by the HDMI OUT . This setting only applies when the HDMI Output Resolution setti ng is set to 1080i or 720p.
82 Zone 2 In addition to your main listening room, you can also enjo y playback in the other room, or as we call Zone 2. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two w ays you can connect Zone 2 speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiv er.
83 Zone 2 —Continued If you’ ve connected your Zon e 2 speakers to the A V receiv er, as explained in “Connecting Y our Zone 2 Speakers Directly to the A V recei ver” on page 82, you must set the “Po wered Zone 2” setting to “Act” (Acti- vated).
84 Zone 2 —Continued This section explains ho w to turn Zone 2 on and off, ho w to select an input source for Zone 2, and how to adjust the vo lume for Zone 2. Contro lling Zone 2 fr om the A V receive r Contr olling Zone 2 with the Remote Contr oller Note: T o control Zone 2, you must press the remote control- ler’ s [ZONE 2] b utton f irst.
85 Zone 2 —Continued Adjusting the V olume for Zone 2 Muting Zones Notes: • Only analog input sources are output by the ZONE 2 LINE OUT and ZONE 2 L/R speaker terminals. Dig- ital input sources are not output. If no sound is heard when an input source is se lected, check if it’ s con- nected to an analog input.
86 Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote cont roller (RC-738M) to control your other A V components, including those made by ot her manufacturers. This sec- tion explains ho w to enter the remote control code for a component that you want to control: D VD, TV , VCR, etc.
87 Contr olling Other Components —Continued Note: This procedure can also be performed on the A V recei ver by using its [SETUP] bu tton, arrow b uttons, and [ENTER] button. 6 Use the arrow [ q ]/[ w ]/[ e ]/[ r ] buttons to select a character , and then press [ENTER].
88 Controlling Other Components —Continued Y ou’ ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note: The remote control codes pro vided are correct at the time of printing, but are subject to change.
89 Contr olling Other Components —Continued Onkyo components that are connected via u are con- trolled by pointing the remote controller at the A V receiv er, not the component. This allows you to control components that are out of vie w , in a rack, for e xample.
90 Controlling Other Components —Continued By pressing the [TV] button that’ s been programmed with the remote control code for TV , you can control your TV with the follow ing buttons. For detail s on entering a remote control code for a differ- ent component, see page 88.
91 Contr olling Other Components —Continued By pressing the REMO TE MODE button that’ s been programmed with the remote control code for your D VD player (HD D VD, Blu-ray , or TV/D VD combination), you can control your player with the follo wing b uttons.

94 Controlling Other Components —Continued By pressing the REMO TE MODE button that’ s been programmed with the remote contr ol code for your CD player , you can control your player with the follo wing buttons. The [CD] b utton is preprogrammed with the remote con- trol code for controlling an Onk yo CD player .
95 Contr olling Other Components —Continued By pressing the REMO TE MODE button that’ s been programmed with the remote control code for your Dock, you can control your iPod in the Dock with the following b uttons. For some RI docks, the [ON/ST ANDBY] b utton may not work with a remote control code 82990 (without u ).
96 Controlling Other Components —Continued r PLA Y MODE button Selects play modes on com ponents with selectable play modes. W orks as a Resume button when used with a DS-A2 RI Dock. s RANDOM button Used with the shuf fle function. 97 T roub leshooting If you hav e any trouble using the A V receiv er, look for a solution in this section. If you can’ t resolve the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer . Can’t turn on the A V receiver • Make sure that the po wer cord is properly plu gged into the wal l outlet.
98 T r oubleshooting —Continued The center speaker produces no sound • When the Stereo or Mono li stening mode is selected, the center speaker produces no sound.
