11 Fr ont & Rear P anels —Continued a COMPONENT VIDEO IN 1, 2 and 3 These RCA component video inputs are for con- necting components with a component video out- put, such as a D VD player , D VD recorder, or D VR (digital video re corder). They’ re as signable, which means you can assign each one to an input selector to suit your setup.

15 About Home Theater Thanks to the A V receiv er’ s superb capabilit ies, you can enjoy surround sound with a real sense of mo vement in your own home—just lik e being in a movie th eater or concert hall. W ith D VDs you can enjoy DTS and Dolby Digital.
16 Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configurat ion For 7.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need sev en speakers and a powered subwoofer . The following tabl e indicates the channels you should use depending on the numb er of speakers that you ha ve.
17 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Speaker Connectio n Precaution s Read the following before connecting your speak ers: • Y ou can connect speakers with an impedance of between 4 and 16 ohms.
18 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued The FR ONT L/R and SURR B ACK L/R terminal posts can be used with front speakers and surround back speakers respecti vely , or bi-amped to pro vide separate tweeter and woofer feeds fo r a pair of front speakers that support bi-amping, providing improv ed bass and treble performance.
19 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop ante nna, and how to connect commercially a vailable outd oor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiv er won’t pick up an y radio signals without any an tenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
20 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Connecting an Outdoo r FM Antenna If you cannot achie ve good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a co mmercially a vailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obta i ned when installed in an attic or loft.

26 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Hooking Up the Multic hannel D VD Input If your D VD player supports multichanne l audio formats such as DVD- Audio or SACD, and it has a multichannel analog audio output, you can connect it to the A V receiv er’ s mu ltichannel DVD input.

32 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demands of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Mu ltimedia Interface) is a new digital interface standard for connecting TVs, projectors, D VD players, set-top boxes, and other video com ponents.
33 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Making HDMI Connections ■ Video Signals Digital video signals receiv ed by the HDMI IN jacks are normally output by the HDMI OUT for display on your TV . Composite video, S-V ideo, and compon ent video sources can be upcon verted for the HDMI output.

37 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued ■ If Y our iP od Supports Video: Connect your RI Dock’ s analog audio output jacks to the A V receiv er’ s GAME/TV IN L/R jacks, and connect its video output jack to the A V recei ver GAME/TV IN V jack.
38 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued W ith u (Remote Interacti ve) , you can use the follo w- ing special functions: ■ A uto P ower On/Standby When you start playba ck on a component connected via u , if the A V receiver is on Standby , it will auto- matically turn on and sele ct that component as the input source.
39 T urning On the A V Receiver Standby/On On/Standby Receiver Standby indicator T urning On and Standb y Press the [On/Standby] button. Alternatively , press the remote c ontro ller’ s [Receiver] button, followed b y the [On/Standby] b utton. The A V recei ver comes on, the display lights up, and the Standb y indicator goes of f.

41 First Time Setup —Continued Carry out the settings for th e A V receiv er by using t he Onscreen Setup Menu. ■ Menus f or First Time Setup Using the Onscreen Setup Men us 1 Press the [Receive r] button f ol- lowed b y the [Setup] button. The main menu appears onscreen.
42 First Time Setup —Continued HDMI Input Setup If you connect a video component to HDMI IN, you must assign that input to an input selector . For e xample, if you connect your D VD player to HDMI IN 1, you must assign HDMI IN 1 to the D VD input selector .
43 First Time Setup —Continued Component Video Setup If you connect to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN, you must assign it to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2, you should assign it to th e D VD input selector .
44 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a component to a digital input jack, you must assign t hat jack to an in put selector . For e xample, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN1 jack, you should assign that jack to the CD input selector .
45 First Time Setup —Continued If the impedance of any speaker is 4 ohms or more but less than 6, set the minimum speaker impedance to 4 ohms. If you’ ve connected your front speakers to the FR ONT L/R and SURR B A CK L/R termin al posts for bi-amping, you must change the “Spe akers T ype” setting.
46 First Time Setup —Continued For the on screen setup menus to display properly , you must specify the TV system used in your area. Note: This procedure can also be perform ed on the A V receiv er by using its [Setup] b utton, arro w buttons, and [ Enter] button.
47 First Time Setup —Continued For AM tuning to work properly , you must specify the AM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting is changed, al l radio presets are deleted. Note: This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiver by using its [Setup] button, arro w buttons, and [Enter] button.
48 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect an u -capable Onk yo MiniDisc recorder , CD recorder, or RI Dock to the T APE IN/OUT or GAME/TV IN jacks, for u to work properly , you must change this se tting. This setting can only be changed on the A V recei ver.
49 First Time Setup —Continued W it h the supplied calibrat ed microphone, Audyssey MultEQ automatically determines the number of speakers connected, their si ze for purposes of bass management, optimum crossover frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), a nd distances fr om the primary li stening position.
50 First Time Setup —Continued 2 Place the speaker setup micro- phone at measurement point 1 (page 49), and connect it to the Setup Mic jack. Notes: • Before starting Audyssey MultEQ ® Automatic Speaker Setup, arrange the room and connect the speakers as you would for enjoying movies.

53 First Time Setup —Continued Changing the Speake r Settings Man ually If you wish to make ch anges to the settings foun d during the automatic speak er setup, follo w the directions on see pages 90–97. Notes: • Pleas e note that T HX recommends an y THX main speakers be set to “80Hz(THX)”.
54 Basic Operations This section explains ho w to select the input source (i.e., the A V compone nt that you want to listen to or watch). Selecting the Input Sour ce 1 Use the A V rec eiver’ s input select or buttons to select the input sour ce. T o select the input source with the remote contr oller , use the Input Selector bu ttons.
55 Basic Operations —Continued The multichannel D VD input is for connecting a compo- nent with a 7.1-channel analo g audio output, such as a D VD- Audio or SA CD-capable DVD player , or an MPEG decoder .
56 Basic Oper ations —Continued Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V recei ver. Tip : Y ou can specify how mu ch the output is muted with the “Muting Le vel” setting (see page 106). W ith the sleep timer, you can set the A V receiv er to turn off automatically after a specif ied period.
57 Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can st ore your fav orite stations as presets for quick selectio n. Listening to the Radio T uning into Radio Stations ■ A uto T uning Mode When tuned into a station, the TUNED indicator appears.
58 Listening to the Radio —Continued Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fa vorite AM/FM radio stations as presets. Note: Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification (see page 104). Its name is di splayed instead of the band and frequency .

60 Listening to the Radio —Continued Setting the Satellite Ra dio Mod e Before you can listen to XM Satellite Radi o, you must set the SA T Radio Mode to “XM”. Selecting XM Satel lite Radio 1 Press the [Receiver] button, fol- lowed by the [Setup] button.
61 Listening to the Radio —Continued Signing Up for XM Satellite R adio Once you hav e installed the XM Mini-T uner and Home Dock, you are ready to subscrib e to XM Satellite Radio. Y ou’ll need a major credit card and your XM Radio ID. There are three places you can f ind your 8-character XM Radio ID: 1.

63 Listening to the Radio —Continued Selecting the Pre vious Channel: Presetting XM Channels Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite XM channels and AM/FM ra dio stations as presets.
64 Listening to the Radio —Continued P ositioning the XM Mini-T uner System Y ou can check the signal strengt h of the XM radio signal and adjust the position of the XM Mini-T uner System accordingly . Notes: • So long as the signal stre ngth is good, you can enjo y XM Radio b y using either satellit e or terrestria l recep- tion.

76 Listening to the Radio —Continued RDS only works in ar eas wher e RDS broadcasts ar e av ailabl e. When tuned into an RDS st ation, the RDS indicator appears. ■ What is RDS? RDS stands for Radio Data System and is a method of transmitting data in FM radi o signals.

89 Ad v anced Setup The onscreen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a conv enient way to change the A V receiver’ s variou s settings. Settings are org a nized into eight categories on the main menu , most containing a s ubmenu . Onscreen Setup Menu s 6.

92 Adv anced Setup —Continued Low-P ass Filter for t he LFE Channel W ith this setting, you can specify the cutoff frequency of the LFE channel’ s low-pass fi lter (LPF), which can be used to filter out unw anted hum. The LPF onl y applies to sources that use the LFE channel.
93 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Dista nce Here you can specify the dist ance from each speaker to the listening position so that the sound from each speaker arri ves at the listener’ s ears as the sound designer intended.
94 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Le vel Calibratio n Here you can adjust the le vel of each speaker with the bui lt-in test tone so that the v olume of each speaker is the same at the listening position. Notes: • The speak ers cannot be cali brated while the output of the A V rec eiv er is muted.
95 Adv anced Setup —Continued Equalizer Se tting W ith the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of speakers indi vidually with a 7-band equalizer . The vol- ume of each spea ker can be set on page 94. 1 Press the [Receive r] button f ol- lowed b y the [Setup] button.
