Follo wing the instructions in this manual will enable you to obtain optimum performance and listening pleasure from your ne w CD/MD TUNER AMPLIFIER.

6 ◆ Connecting the supplied indoor FM antenna (aerial) While listening to the radio on page 24, mo v e the antenna (aerial) in various directions until you receiv e the clearest signal. Then secure the antenna (aer ial) with push pins in the position that creates the least distor tion.
7 ◆ Directional Iinkage Do not use the same antenna f or both FM and TV (or VCR) reception since these signals ma y interfere with each other . If you must use a common FM/TV (or VCR) antenna, use a directional linkage type splitter .
8 Notes • Connecting the left and right speakers re versely or with incorrect polarities can cause unnatural or distor ted sound. • The load impedance of each speaker m ust be between 4 and 16 ohms. Connecting speakers with less than 4 ohms imped- ance could damage the ampli fi er .
9 Notes Do not place objects on the unit as they ma y interfere with proper v entilation. • F ollow the rules for digital recording (see page 67). • A udio plugs must be connected securely . Incomplete connection will not reproduce sound. • Do not bundle the audio connection cab les with the speaker cords.
10 ◆ Connecting a Onky o D VD player The f ollowing diagram illustrates ho w to connect an optional Onkyo D VD pla yer . Connect the FR-N3X LINE IN jacks to the D VD play er ’ s analog audio output jacks.
11 When the pow er cord is connected to the A C outlet, the FR-N3X enters stand-by mode . The ST ANDBY indicator lights up . Connecting the po wer cord T o wall outlet ST ANDBY indicator.
12 Important notes on handling CDs 1 Carefully lift the disc fr om the disc case, mak- ing sure to hold the disc by its edges or the hole in the middle. 2 Y ou can use a soft, dry cloth to wipe dust and fi ngerprints off the surface of CDs. Do not use v olatile agents on discs, suc h as thinner or benzene .
13 ◆ Inser ting the batteries Notes • Do not mix new batteries with old batteries or different kinds of batteries. • T o avoid corrosion, remo ve the batteries if the remote controller is not to be used f or a long per iod of time. • Remov e dead batter ies immediately to av oid damage from corrosion.

16 ◆ T urning the unit on and off Press ST ANDBY/ON on the unit or on the remote con- troller . If you press the same b utton again, the unit will tur n off and enter standby mode . The FR-N3X has the follo wing two power modes. Standby mode: The displa y remains tur ned off (see page 11).
17 T o cancel the cloc k setting Press EDIT/CLEAR/ NO . ◆ Chec king the time and the day of the week T o check the time and the da y of the week, press CLOCK CALL on the remote controller . T o s witch between the 12-hour and 24-hour displa ys, press DIS- PLA Y while the current time is indicated on the dis- pla y .
18 Note A uto presetting may store noise instead of a station with a clear signal to some preset channels, depending on y our location. In such cases, erase the preset manually (see page 50). If auto presetting is unsuccessful Check the antenna (aerial) connection and position (see page 6).
19 • Y ou can preset up to 30 channels including both FM and AM stations. F or example, if y ou hav e already stored FM stations to eight channels, y ou can use 22 channels to store preset AM stations. • Programmed FM and AM stations are indicated separately .
20 ◆ Selecting the trac k to play • T o locate the beginning of the play- ing track, turn MUL TI JOG counter- cloc kwise slightly . If y ou turn it further , you can select the previous trac ks in reverse or der . T o select the next trac k in order , turn MUL TI JOG c lockwise.

22 ◆ Selecting the trac k to play • T o locate the beginning of the playing trac k, turn MUL TI JOG counterc lockwise slightly . If y ou turn it further , you can select the previous trac ks in rever se order . T o select the next trac k, turn MUL TI JOG c lockwise.

24 Listening to an FM/AM station First, program the stations into preset channels (see pages 18 and 19). 1 3 2 DISPLA Y VOLUME 1 T urn on the po wer to the FR-N3X. 2 Select FM or AM. Pressing FM/AM toggles between FM and AM. The channel selected most recently will be recalled.

26 ◆ Adjusting the tonal quality Y ou can also use the S.B ASS button on the remote controller to turn S.B ASS on or off. ◆ Muting the sound Press MUTING on the remote controller . The MUT - ING indicator lights in the displa y . T o restore the sound, press MUTING again.
27 Dubbing CD to MD (CD dubbing) • This operation is one-touch recor ding that enables the DLA LINK. • The tracks are automaticall y numbered. 1 Insert a CD and MD. See Step 1 of “ Playing a CD ” on page 20. See Step 1 of “ Playing an MD ” on page 22.
28 ◆ Limitations of double-speed CD dubbing Due to limitations established f or cop yr ight protection, you cannot repeat doub le-speed CD dubbing using the same CD until the fi rst 74 minutes of doub le-speed CD dubbing is completed.
29 ◆ Recor ding from the top of a song y ou are listening to (speci fi ed track dubbing) Y ou cannot use double-speed CD dubbing f or this operation. 1 Insert a CD and an MD and press the CD to start playback. Be sure to inser t a recordable MD with the record- protect tab closed.
30 ◆ Switching to F ade Out mode (while the input sour ce is MD and the sys- tem is stopped) This mode f ades out (gradually lowers the v olume le vel of) the end of a trac k that cannot be recorded to its conclusion during CD dubbing, speci fi ed track dub- bing, or double-speed CD dub bing.
31 Recor ding CD to MD (Synchr o recording) After y ou select songs, this function enables y ou to edit and record the songs. 1 5 3 6 1 Insert a CD and an MD. See Step 1 of “ Playing a CD ” on page 20. See Step 1 of “ Playing an MD ” on page 22.

Recor ding from another Onky o System (Synchr o Recording) This function is useful when y ou record CDs while selecting tracks. It is also con venient for analog recor ding from another Onky o system.
34 ◆ Signal Synchr o Recording Signal Synchro Recording star ts recording onto an MD when a signal is receiv ed from a source con- nected to the input jacks . 1 Execute Steps 1 to 3 on the pre vious page. The MD is set to recording pause. 2 Press REC.

38 ◆ Adjusting the recor ding level Y ou can adjust the recor ding level f or better recording quality . This operation is a vailable during Synchro recording and Signal recording. Y ou cannot adjust the recording lev el during CD dubbing with DLA LINK or during double-speed dubbing.
39 ◆ Numbering the songs — Level Sync • The Le vel Sync function of the FR-N3X automatically numbers the song at the beginning of signal input. T ur n on this function to automatically number songs during recording. (The songs may not be numbered if the gap (silence) between songs is too shor t.
40 ◆ MEMOR Y playbac k Y ou can select and store track numbers (up to 25) in a desired pla yback order . By combining this function with the CD dubbing func- tion, you can easily create an MD of y our fa vorite recordings. (Y ou cannot combine this function with the CD double-speed dub bing function.
41 ◆ 1 TR (one trac k) playbac k Y ou can play bac k only a single track using this mode. In addition, using the CD dubbing function along with this mode enables y ou to create a single track CD easily . ◆ RANDOM pla yback All trac ks on the disc will be shuf fl ed, then play ed back.
42 ◆ REPEA T/CHAIN REPEA T playbac k • The REPEA T mode plays bac k a CD or MD repeat- edly , and the CHAIN REPEA T mode plays bac k both the CD and MD in turn. • Y ou can combine either REPEA T or CHAIN REPEA T mode with MEMOR Y , 1 TR, or RANDOM mode.
43 ◆ Gr oup The Group function enables y ou to assign tracks on an MD to groups . This function is conv enient when you use MDLP f or a disc that contains many trac ks. Notes • Y ou can group only consecutiv e tracks. • Y ou cannot assign a single trac k to multiple groups.
44 Group Out (while the sour ce is MD and the unit is stopped) This function enables y ou to remov e a track from the group . ◆ Cancelling all gr oups (while the sour ce is MD and the unit is stopped) This function enables y ou to cancel all the groups on the disc.
45 ◆ Outline of edit function Erasing a group — G.Er ase All trac ks in the speci fi ed group will be erased. Moving a g roup — G.Mov e Enables y ou to mov e a group . 50 Tips f or changing the preset channels T o change the channel number : Use the cop y and delete functions. F or example, if y ou wish to change channel 3 (which has an FM station programmed) to channel 8 (an empty channel): 1 Cop y the station in channel 3 to channel 8.
51 ◆ Copying a preset c hannel – Preset Copy If you cop y a preset channel to another channel, the name of the preset channel (see page 52) is also cop- ied to the other channel. 1 Call the preset channel y ou wish to copy . 2 Press EDIT /CLEAR/NO and turn MUL TI JOG until “ PresetCopy? ” appears in the displa y .
52 ◆ Naming an MD disc or trac k • Y ou can enter up to 100 alphabetical characters per name. • Use a recordable MD with the record-protect tab closed. 1 Insert the MD, then select MD as the source. 2 T o name the disc, proceed to Step 3 . T o name a track, select the track.

58 ◆ Dividing a selected trac k – Divide • Y ou can ex ecute this function only when the input source is MD and an MD is pla ying or paused. • If a selected trac k has a name (see page 52), the fi rst par t will retain the name after the track is divided.
59 ◆ Combining selected trac ks – Combine • Y ou can ex ecute this function only when the input source is MD and an MD is pla ying, paused, or stopped. • When the preceding trac k has a name, this name will be used as the name of the combined trac k.
60 ◆ Five basic functions Sleep timer This timer places the FR-N3X into standby mode automatically when the sleep timer counts down to zero . This function is conv enient, for e xample, when you wish to f all asleep to music or a radio prog ram.
61 ◆ Setting the Once, W eekday , W eek- end, or Rec timer (Continued on the next pa g e) 1 Press TIMER while you are listen- ing to music or a radio pr ogram. “ Sleep 90 ” appears in the display win- dow . The unit will tur n off in 90 minutes.
62 Using the timer functions (continued) 3 Press MUL TI JOG, then turn it to select the start time . 24-hour displa y 12-hour displa y 4 Press MUL TI JOG, then turn it to select the end time. After you press MUL TI JOG in this step , the end time is automatically set to one hour after the star t time.
