En-13 Connections Connecting the AV Receiver Speaker Configuration The following table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many speakers you use, 2 powered subwoofers are recommended for a really powerful and solid bass.
Connections En-14 ■ 9.2-channel playback By adding an external amplifier to the 7.2-channel configuration, you can enjoy 9.2-channel playback. Connect your power amplifier’s analog audio input jacks to the AV receiver’s SB / FH / FW *1 EXT AMP jacks with audio cables.

Connections En-21 This section explains how to connect the s upplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The AV receiver won’t pick up any radio sign als without any antenna connected, so you mu st connect the antenna to use the tuner .
Connections En-22 With u (Remote Interactive), you can use the following special functions: ■ Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connected via u , while the AV receiver is on standby, the AV receiver will automa tically turn on and select that component as the input source.

Turning On & Basic Operations En-50 The Home menu provides quick access to frequently used menus. ■ Network Service ` With this selecti on, you can use various Internet radio services or play the contents sto red in media connected to your home network (DLNA) ( ➔ pages 29 to 32 ).
Turning On & Basic Operations En-51 With the sleep timer, you can set the AV receiver to turn off automatically aft er a specified period. You can adjust the brightness of the AV receiver’s display, and switch the MASTER VOLUME indicator off and on in conjunction.
Turning On & Basic Operations En-52 The Whole House Mode is us ef ul when you want to add extra background music to your home party; this allows you to enjoy the same stereo music as the main room in separate rooms (Zone 2/3). The Whole House Mode selects the same input source for Multi Zone as the main room’s.

En-54 Advanced Operations On-screen Setup With the AV receiver connected to a TV, there are two ways of changing the settings on-screen: using the Quick Setup or the Setup menu ( HOME ). ■ Quick Setup The Quick Setup provides quick access to frequently used settings.
Advanced Operations En-55 ■ Listening Mode *7 ` You can select the listening modes that are grouped in the following categories: “ MOVIE/TV ”, “ MUSIC ”, “ GAME ”, and “ THX ”. Use q / w to select the category an d e / r to select the listening mode.
Advanced Operations En-56 Speaker Leve ls ■ Subwoofer 1 ` –15.0dB to 0.0dB to +12.0dB in 0.5 dB steps. ■ Subwoofer 2 *1 ` –15.0dB to 0.0dB to +12.0dB in 0.5 dB steps. ■ Center ` –12.0dB to 0.0dB to +12.0dB in 0.5 dB steps. You can adjust the volume of each speaker while listening to an input source.
Advanced Operations En-57 Music Opti mizer ■ Music Optimizer ` Off ` On The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files.
Advanced Operations En-58 Note • This procedure can also be performed on the AV receiver by using SETUP , the cursor and enter (middle) buttons. • During Audys sey MultEQ ® XT32 Room Correction and Speaker Setup, messages, etc., that are displaye d on the TV screen will appear on the AV rece iver’s display.
Advanced Operations En-59 By way of optimized circuitry, this fu nction reduces power consumption when the AV rece iver is in standby mode. The HYBRID STANDBY indicator will li ght in either of the following conditions: –“ HDMI Th rough ” is enabled (the HDMI indicator is off).
Advanced Operations En-60 Main Menu Input/Output Assi gn Monitor Out On the “ Monitor Out ” settings, you can se lect whether or not to hav e the video sour ces’ images output through the HDMI output.
Advanced Operations En-61 You can specify the output resolution f or HDMI OUT MAIN and COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT so that the AV receive r upconverts the picture resolution as necessary to match the resolution suppo rted by your TV.
Advanced Operations En-62 • If you assign “ ----- ” to an input selector that is curre ntly selected in “ HDMI Through ” ( ➔ page 80 ), the “ HDMI Through ” setting will be automatically switched to “ Off ”. •“ AUX ” is used only for input from the front panel.
Advanced Operations En-63 Digital Audio Input If you connect a component to a digital audio input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector. For example, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN 1 , you must assign “ OPTICAL1 ” to the “ TV/CD ” input selector.
Advanced Operations En-64 ■ Preout to External Amplifi er ` No ` Surr Back , Front High , Front Wide For 9.2-channel playback, se lect the channel output by SB/FH/FW EXT AMP jacks. I f you sel ect speakers whose setting in Speaker Configuration is set to “ None ”, it will be automatically swi tched to “ 80Hz (THX) ”.
Advanced Operations En-65 ■ Surround Back Ch ` 1ch : Select if only one surround back speaker L is connected. ` 2ch : Select if two (left and right) surro und back speakers are connected. Note • If the “ Surround Back ” setting is set t o “ None ”, this setting cannot be selected.
Advanced Operations En-66 Level Calibration Here you can adjust the leve l of each speaker with the built-in test tone so that the volume of each speaker is the same at the listening position.
Advanced Operations En-67 ■ Loudness Plus ` Off ` On When the “ Loudness Plus ” setting is set to “ On ”, it is possible to enjoy even subtle nuances o f audio expression at low volume. This is only available when the THX listening mode is selected.
Advanced Operations En-68 ■ Overlap ` No ` Yes With this setting, a freque ncy band near the specified crossover frequency is out put by both tweeters and woofers.
Advanced Operations En-69 Output Speaker ` Center : Mono audio is output by the center speaker. ` Left / Right : Mono audio is output by th e front left and right speakers. This setting de termines whic h speakers output mono audio when the Mono listeni ng mode is selected.
Advanced Operations En-70 ■ Dolby Volume ` Off ` On Dolby Volume automatical ly adjusts the difference in volume levels which can occur between differe nt contents or source components, freeing the user from having to make volume adjustments.
Advanced Operations En-71 Audyssey DSX ® ■ Soundstage ` –3dB to Reference to +3dB With this setting, you can ad just the sound stage when using Audyssey DSX. Note • This listening mode can be select ed only when a ll the following conditions are satisfied: – T he center speaker is connected.
Advanced Operations En-72 ■ Equalizer *1 ` Off ` Manual : The manual setting in “Equalize r Settings” ( ➔ page 66 ) is applied. ■ Audyssey *1 ` Off , Movie , Music See “Audyssey” ( ➔ page 56 ). ■ Dynamic EQ *1*2 ` Off , On See “Dynamic EQ ” ( ➔ page 56 ).
Advanced Operations En-73 Movies are mixed in rooms ca lib rated for film reference. To achieve the same referenc e level in a home theater system each speaker level must be adjusted so that –30 dBFS band-limited (500 Hz to 2000 Hz) pink noise produces 75 dB sound pressure level at the listening position.
Advanced Operations En-74 Name Edit You can enter a custom name for each individual in put selector and radio preset for easy identifi cation. When entered, the custom name will app ear on the display. The custom name is edited using the keyboard screen.
Advanced Operations En-75 ■ Picture Mode *1*3 ` Custom : All settings can be performed manually. ` ISF Day : Select when the room is bright. ` ISF Night : Select when the room is dark. ` Cinema : Select when the picture source is a mov ie or alike. ` Game : Select when t he video s ource is a game console.
Advanced Operations En-76 ■ Resolution *4*6*8* 9*10 ` Through : Select this to pass video through the AV receiver at the same resolution and with no conversion. ` Auto : Select this to have the AV receiver automat ically convert video at resolutions supported by your TV.
Advanced Operations En-77 Audio Selector ■ Audio Selector ` ARC : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to HDMI OUT MAIN of the AV receiver. *1 With this selection, the TV’s audio can be automatically selected as a priority among other assignments.
Advanced Operations En-78 ■ Analog/PCM/Digital With this setting, you can specify the listening mode used when an analog (CD, TV, LD, VHS, MD, turntable, radio, cassette, cable, satellit e, etc.) or PCM digital (CD, DVD, etc.) audio signal is played.
Advanced Operations En-79 OSD Setup ■ On Screen Display ` On ` Off This preference determines whether operation details are displayed on-screen when an AV receiver function is adjusted. Even when “ On ” is selected, opera ti on details may not be output if the input source is connected to an HDMI IN .
Advanced Operations En-80 ■ HDMI Through ` Off ` BD/DVD , CBL/SAT , STB/DVR , GAME1 , GAME2 , PC , AUX , TV/CD , PHONO : Selects the input source for which the HDMI Through function is enabled. ` Last : The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at th e time of setting the AV receiver to standby mode.
Advanced Operations En-81 ■ InstaPrevue These settings apply to “ InstaPrev ue ” of the Home menu ( ➔ page 50 ) and specify the preview display of HDMI video streams. Sub Window ` Multi : Displays preview thum bnails all at once. ` Single : Displays preview thumbnails one-by-one.

Advanced Operations En-83 Multi Zone In addition to the main liste ning room, you can also enjoy playback in the other room, or as we call Multi Zone. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two ways you ca n connect Zone speakers: 1.
Advanced Operations En-84 Connecting the Zone Speaker s to an Additional Amplifier This setup allows 7.2-cha nnel playback in your main listening room and 2-channel stereo playback in Zone 2/3. Note • The volume of Zone 2/3 must be set on the Zone 2/3 amplifier.
Advanced Operations En-85 ■ Operating on the AV receiver Tip • The Whole House Mode function shar es the input source of main room with Multi Zone ( ➔ pag e 52 ). ■ Operating on the remote controller To control Zone 2/3, you must press ZO NE on the remote controller first.

Advanced Operations En-87 Using a Multiroom Kit with a Cabinet In this setup, the IR receiver picks up the infra red signals from the remote controller and feeds them to the AV receiver located in the cabi net via the connecting block.
En-88 Controlling Other Components iPod/iPhone Playback via Onkyo Dock RI Dock With the RI Dock, you can easily play the music of your iPod/iPhone, or watch the slid eshows and videos of your iPod/iPhone on a TV.
Controlling Other Components En-89 By pressing the REMOTE MODE button that’s been programmed with the remote control code for your Dock, you can control your iPod/iPhone in the Dock with the buttons described further in this section. See “Entering Remote Control Codes” for details on entering a remote control code ( ➔ page 91 ).
Controlling Other Components En-90 Controlling Other Components You can use the AV receiver’s remot e controller to cont rol your other AV components, in cluding those made by other manufacturers. This secti on explains how to enter the remote control code for a component th at you want to control: DVD, TV, CD, etc.
Controlling Other Components En-91 You’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • Though the prov ided remote cont rol codes are correct at the time of release, they are subject to change. You can change the configuration of colored b uttons, with which REMOTE MODE buttons are preset.
Controlling Other Components En-92 Onkyo components that are connected via u are controlled by pointing the re mote controller at the AV receiver, not the component.
Controlling Other Components En-93 Controlling MHL-Enabled Mobile De vice By programming the supplied re mote controller with the appropriate remote control code, you can use it to operate your MHL-enabled mobile device. Connect your MHL-enabled mobile device to the AUX INPUT MHL jack.
Controlling Other Components En-94 ■ DVD player/DVD reco rder operation ■ VCR/PVR operation ■ Cassette tape deck operation ■ Satellite receiver/Cable receiver oper ation ■ CD player/CD recorder/MD recorder operation Note • With some components, certain buttons may not work as expected, and some may not work at all.
Controlling Other Components En-95 The AV receiver’s remote controller can lear n the commands of other remote con trollers. By transmittin g, for example, the Play command fro m your CD player’s remote controller, the supplied remote controller can learn it and then reproduce the exact sam e command when its 1 is pressed in CD remote mode.
Controlling Other Components En-96 You can program the re mote controller’s ACTIVITIES to perform a sequence of re mote control actions. Example: To play a CD you typically need to perform the following actions: 1. Press RECEIVER to sele ct the Receiver rem ote controller mode.
