11 Getting to Know the A V Receiver —Continued A OPTICAL DIGIT AL These optical digital audio inputs are for connecting components with optical digital audio outputs, such as CD players and D VD players. The optical digital audio output is for connecting a digital recorder with an optical digital input, such as a CD recorder .
12 Getting to Know the A V Receiver —Continued N RS232 American and Australian models don’t hav e this port. This port is for connecting the A V receiver to home automation equipment and external controllers.
13 Remote Contr oller Notes: • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries or dif ferent types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remov e the batteries to prev ent damage from leakage or corrosion.
14 Remote Controller —Continued Including the A V receiver, the remote controller can be used to control up to nine different components. The remote controller has a specific operating mode for use with each type of component. Modes are selected by using the eight REMO TE MODE buttons.

18 Remote Controller —Continued HDD mode is for controlling Onkyo’ s next generation HDD-compatible components. As of 2005, it can be used with the Onkyo DS-A1 Remote Interacti ve Dock and Apple iPod connected via . When Using the DS-A1: • Connect the DS-A1 to the T APE IN or VIDEO 3 IN jacks.
19 Connecting Y our Speakers Thanks to the A V receiver’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound with a real sense of mov ement in your own home—just lik e being in a movie theater or concert hall. Y ou can enjoy D VDs featuring DTS and Dolby Digital.
20 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued Speaker Configuration F or the best surround-sound e xperience, you should con- nect sev en speakers and a po wered subwoofer . The following table sho ws which channels you should use based on the number of speakers you ha ve.
21 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued Speaker Connection Precautions Read the following before connecting your speak ers: •Y ou can connect speakers with an impedance of between 4 and 16 ohms.
22 Connecting Antenna This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connect commercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiver w on’t pick up an y radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
23 Connecting Antenna —Continued If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.
24 Connecting Y our Components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve completed and double-checked all A V connections.
25 Connecting Y our Components —Continued By connecting both the audio and video outputs of your D VD player and other A V components to the A V receiver, you can switch the audio and video signals simultaneously simply by changing the input source on the A V receiver.

28 Connecting Y our Components —Continued Hooking Up the Multichannel D VD Input If your D VD player supports multichannel audio formats such as D VD-Audio or SA CD, and it has a multichannel analog audio output, you can connect it to the A V receiver’ s multichannel D VD input.

35 Connecting Y our Components —Continued W ith (Remote Interactive), you can use the follo wing special functions: Auto P ower On/Standby When you start playback on a component connected via , if the A V receiv er is on Standby , it will automatically turn on and select that component as the input source.
36 Connecting Y our Components —Continued About HDMI Designed to meet the demands of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a ne w digital interface standard for connecting TVs, projectors, D VD players, set-top boxes, and other video components.
37 Connecting Y our Components —Continued Making HDMI Connections Video Signal Flow Chart Digital video signals receiv ed at HDMI IN 1 and 2 are only output by the HDMI OUT and sent to your TV . Composite video, S-V ideo, and component video input signals are not output by the HDMI OUT .
38 Connecting Y our Components —Continued The A V receiver has A C outlets on its rear panel that can be used to connect the power cords of other components that you intend to use with the A V receiver. These com- ponents can then be left turned on so that they turn on and off as and when the A V recei ver is turned on and set to Standby .
39 T urning On the A V Receiver For models other than the American and A ustralian models: •T o completely shut do wn the A V receiv er, set the [PO WER] switch to the OFF position ( ).
40 Fir st Time Setup This section explains the settings that you need to make before using the A V receiver for the v ery first time. W ith the supplied speaker setup microphone, the Auto- matic Spea.
41 First Time Setup —Continued Tip: •Y ou can cancel the automatic speaker setup at anytime by disconnecting the microphone. 3 Press [ENTER]. The automatic speaker setup starts.
42 First Time Setup —Continued ■ Checking the Results If you selected “Check the Results” in step 4 on the pre- vious page, the following menu appears and you can check the results of the automatic speaker setup. 1. W arning— Undetected speakers and position w arn- ings (see the right column).
43 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a video component to HDMI IN 1 or 2, you must assign that input to an input selector . For exam- ple, if you connect your D VD player to HDMI IN 1, you must assign HDMI IN 1 to the D VD input selector .
44 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a video component to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 1, 2, or 3, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 3, you must assign COMPONENT VIDEO IN 3 to the D VD input selector .
45 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a component to a digital input, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your CD player to OPTICAL IN 2, you must assign OPTICAL IN 2 to the CD input selector . Here are the default assignments.
46 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect an -capable Onkyo MiniDisc recorder , CD recorder , or next generation HDD-compat- ible component to the T APE IN/OUT or VIDEO 3 IN jacks, for to work properly , you must change this setting. This setting can only be changed on the A V receiver.
47 First Time Setup —Continued Y ou must specify the TV system used in your area. Note: • This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiv er by using its [SETUP] button, arro w buttons, and [ENTER] button. Y ou must specify the AM frequency step used in your area.

49 Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner , you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations, and store your fa vorite stations as presets for easy selection. T uning into AM/FM Radio Stations ■ A uto T uning Mode When tuned into a station, the TUNED indicator appears.
50 Listening to the Radio —Continued Using RDS (European Model Onl y) RDS only works with European models in areas where RDS broadcasts are av ailable. When tuned to an RDS station, the RDS indicator appears. ■ What is RDS? RDS stands for Radio Data System and is a method of transmitting data in FM radio signals.
51 Listening to the Radio —Continued Displaying Radio T ext (R T) When tuned to an RDS station that’ s broadcasting text information, the text can be displayed. Notes: • The message “W aiting” may appear while the A V receiv er waits for the R T information.

53 Listening to the Radio —Continued Selecting XM Radio Channels There are two modes for selecting XM radio channels: Channel Search mode , which allows you to select an y channel. Category Search mode , which allows you to select channels by category .
54 Listening to the Radio —Continued Selecting XM Channels from the Fr ont Panel: Displaying XM Radio Inf ormation The following information can be displayed: Note: If the category , artist, or song title is not a vailable, “- - -” will be displayed instead.
55 Listening to the Radio —Continued P ositioning the XM Antenna Y ou can check the signal strength of the XM radio signal and adjust the position of the XM antenna accordingly . Note: If the signal quality is 0%, make sure that the XM antenna is connected properly .
56 Listening to the Radio —Continued Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite AM/FM radio stations and XM channels as presets. Selecting Presets Deleting Presets Presetting AM/FM Stations and XM Channels 1 T une into the AM/FM station or XM channel that y ou want to store as a preset.
57 Using the Multichannel D VD Input The multichannel D VD input is for connecting a compo- nent with a 5.1/7.1-channel analog audio output, such as a D VD player , D VD-Audio/SA CD-capable player , or an MPEG decoder . See page 28 for hookup information.
58 Common Functions This section explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Y ou can adjust the brightness of the display . Y ou can adjust the volume of each speaker while listen- ing to an input source. These temporary adjustments are cancelled when the A V receiver is set to Standby .
59 Common Functions —Continued W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiver so that it turns off automatically after a specified period. To cancel the sleep timer , press the [SLEEP] button repeatedly until the SLEEP indicator disappears. To check the remaining sleep time, press the [SLEEP] b utton.
60 Using the Listening Modes F or a description of each listening mode, see “ About the Listening Modes” on page 62. Selecting on the A V Receiver ■ [PURE A UDIO] b utton This button selects the Pure Audio listening mode. When this mode is selected, the A V receiver’ s dis- play is turned off and only the HDMI OUT outputs video signals.
61 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The following table sho ws which listening modes can be used with each input signal format. : Only av ailable on 6.1/7.1-channel playback systems. Not av ailable while the ZONE 2 SPEAKERS terminals are being used.
62 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The A V receiver’ s listening modes can transform your listening room into a movie theater or concert hall, with high fidelity and stunning surround sound.
63 Using the Listening Modes —Continued DTS+Neo:6 This mode uses Neo:6 to expand 5.1-channel DTS sources for 6.1/7.1-channel playback. Use it with D VDs that bear the DTS logo and feature a 5.
64 Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the input source and how to record audio and video from separate sources. Notes: • The surround sound and DSP listening modes cannot be recorded. • Copy-protected D VDs cannot be recorded. • Sources connected to the multichannel D VD input cannot be recorded.
65 Onscreen Setup Menus The onscreen setup menus are displayed on the connected TV (not via the HDMI OUT) and pro vide a con venient way to change the A V receiver’ s settings, which are arranged into two groups: Fi r st T ime Setup and Advanced Setup .
66 Adjusting the Listening Modes W ith the Re-EQ function, you can correct a soundtrack whose high-frequency content is too harsh, making it more suitable for home theater viewing.
67 Adjusting the Listening Modes —Continued T one Contr ol Settings Y ou can adjust the bass and treble for the front speakers. The tone control circuits are bypassed in the Direct and Pure Audio listening modes. ■ Bass Y ou can boost or cut low-frequenc y sounds output by the front speakers from –10 dB to +10 dB in 1 dB steps.
68 Adjusting the Listening Modes —Continued Dolby Digital Settings ■ Dolby EX This setting determines how Dolby Digital EX signals are handled. This setting is una vailable if no surround back speakers are connected or the ZONE 2 SPEAKERS terminals are being used (page 82).
69 Adjusting the Listening Modes —Continued Y ou can specify a default listening mode for each signal format supported by each input selector . The A V receiver will then automatically select that listening mode based on the format of the input signal.
70 Ad v anced Setup This section explains ho w to check the speaker settings and how to set them manually , which is useful if you change a speaker after performing the automatic speaker setup. Some speaker settings are set automatically by the Auto- matic Speaker Setup function (see page 40).
71 Adv anced Setup —Continued Low-P ass Filter f or the LFE Channel W ith this setting, you can specify the cutoff frequenc y of the LFE channel’ s low-pass filter (LPF), which can be used to filter out unwanted hum. The LPF only applies to sources that use the LFE channel.
72 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Distance W ith these settings, you can specify the distance from each speaker to the listening position. Note: • This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiv er by using its [SETUP] button, arro w buttons, and [ENTER] button.
73 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Level Calibration W ith these settings, you can adjust the lev el of each speaker while listening to the test tone so that the v olume of each speaker is the same at the listening position.
74 Adv anced Setup —Continued THX A udio Setup This setting is only av ailable if the SurrBack Ch setting in the Speaker Configuration is set to 2ch.
75 Adv anced Setup —Continued Equalizer Settings W ith these settings, you can adjust the tone of each speaker . The volume of each speak er can be set on page 73. Notes: • This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiv er by using its [SETUP] button, arro w buttons, and [ENTER] button.
76 Adv anced Setup —Continued This section explains items on the “Input Setup” menu. Delay ■ A/V Sync When using progressiv e scanning, you may find that the picture and sound are out of sync. W ith this setting, you can correct this by delaying the audio signals from 0 to 250 milliseconds (ms) in 1 millisecond steps.
77 Adv anced Setup —Continued Character Edit W ith this setting, you can enter a custom name for each input source. When the input source is selected, its name will appear on the display . To delete all the characters in a name: In step 5, press the Left [ ] button instead of the Right [] button.
78 Adv anced Setup —Continued This section explains items on the “Preference” menu. Note: • This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiv er by using its [SETUP] button, arro w buttons, and [ENTER] button. IntelliV olume W ith this preference, you can set the input lev el for each input source.
79 Adv anced Setup —Continued ■ Po wer On V ol W ith this preference, you can specify the volume setting to be used when the A V receiver is turned on. When the V olume Display preference is set to Absolute, the range is 0 to 100. When it’ s set to Relati ve, the range is – ∞ dB, –81 dB to +18 dB.
80 Adv anced Setup —Continued Changing the A V Receiver’ s Remote ID When sev eral Onkyo components are used in the same room, their remote ID codes may ov erlap. T o dif ferenti- ate the A V receiver from the other components, you can change its remote ID from 1, the default, to 2 or 3.
81 Adv anced Setup —Continued Normally , the A V receiv er detects the signal format auto- matically . Howe ver , if you experience either of the fol- lowing issues when playing PCM or DTS material, you can specify the signal format as either PCM or DTS: • If the beginnings of tracks from a PCM source are cut off, try the PCM setting.
82 Zone 2 W ith the Zone 2 function, you can enjoy one input source in the main room and a different input source in another room. There ar e two ways to hook up y our Zone 2 speakers: 1) Use an amp (receiver or inte grated amp) in Zone 2 and connect your Zone 2 speakers to it.
83 Zone 2 —Continued If you’ ve connected your Zone 2 speak ers to this A V receiv er, as explained in “Using Only Speakers in Zone 2” on page 82, you must set the “Powered Zone 2” setting to “ Act” (Activ ated) as explained here.
84 Zone 2 —Continued Controlling Zone 2 with the Remote Controller Note: •T o control Zone 2, you must press the remote control- ler’ s [ZONE 2] REMOTE MODE b utton first. Adjusting the V olume for Zone 2 To Mute Zone 2: Press the remote controller’ s [ZONE 2] button, follo wed by the [MUTING] button.
85 Zone 2 —Continued To control the A V receiv er with the remote controller while you’ re in the Zone 2 room, you’ll need a commer - cially av ailable multiroom remote control kit.
86 Contr olling Other Components Y ou can control your other components, including those made by other manufacturers, with the remote controller . This section explains ho w to: • Enter the remote control code for a component that you want to control (e.
87 Controlling Other Components —Continued Remote Control Codes f or Onky o Components Connected via Onkyo components that are connected via are con- trolled by pointing the remote controller at the A V receiv er, not the component. This allo ws you to control components that are out of view , in a rack, for example.
88 Controlling Other Components —Continued To control another component, point the remote contr oller at it and use the buttons explained below . (Y ou must select the appropriate r emote control mode first.) With some A V components, certain buttons may not work as expected, and some may not work at all.
89 Controlling Other Components —Continued The A V receiver’ s remote controller can receiv e and learn commands from other remote controllers. By trans- mitting, for example, the Play command fro.
90 Controlling Other Components —Continued Y ou can program the remote controller’ s MA CR O but- tons to perform a sequence of actions. Example: To play a CD, you typically need to perform the follow- ing actions: 1. Press the [RECEIVER] REMO TE MODE button to select the Receiv er remote controller mode.
91 Tr oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the A V receiv er, look for a solution in this section. If you can’t resolv e the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer . Can’t turn on the A V receiver • Make sure that the po wer cord is plugged into the wall outlet properly .
92 Tr oubleshooting —Continued The subwoof er produces no sound • When you play source material that contains no infor- mation in the LFE channel, the subwoofer produces no sound. • Make sure the speakers are configured correctly (pages 70, 71).
93 Tr oubleshooting —Continued Reception is noisy , stereo FM reception suffers from hiss, or the FM STEREO indicator doesn’t appear • Relocate your antenna. •M ove the A V receiv er away from your TV or com- puter . • Listen to the station in mono (page 49).
94 Tr oubleshooting —Continued The A V receiver contains a microcomputer f or signal pro- cessing and control functions. In very rare situations, sev ere interf erence, noise from an e xternal source, or static electricity may cause it to loc kup.
