9 Bef ore Using the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E The W orldwide model has a voltage selector for compat- ibility with power systems around the w orld. Before you plug in this model, make sure that the v oltage selector is set to the correct voltage for your area.
10 Remote Contr oller Including the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E, the remote con- troller can be used to control up to 10 different compo- nents, including Onkyo components connected via . The remote controller has a specific operating mode for use with each type of component.

16 Connecting Y our Speaker s Y ou can use two sets of speakers with the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E: speak er set A and speaker set B. Speaker set A should be installed in your main listening room and can be used with Dolby Digital and DTS surround material.
17 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued Before you connect your speakers, read the follo wing: • Disconnect the power cord from the w all outlet. • Read the instructions supplied with your speakers. •P ay close attention to speaker wiring polarity .
18 Connecting Antenna This chapter explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna and ho w to connect commercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The TX-SR502/TX-SR502E won’ t pick up any radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must con- nect the antenna to use the tuner .
19 Connecting Antenna —Continued Connecting an Outdoor FM Antenna If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.

21 Connecting the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E —Continued ■ Inputs Up to five A V components can be connected to the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E’ s rear panel inputs, and one to its front panel input. The follo wing table lists the type of component that you can connect to each input.

31 T urning On Notes: (not for the American model) • The TX-SR502/TX-SR502E is shipped with the PO WER switch in the ON position ( ). When the power cord is connected for the v ery first time, the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E will enter Standby and the ST ANDBY indicator will light up.
32 First Time Setup —Continued This section explains ho w to specify which speakers are connected and their sizes. For speakers with a cone diameter larger than 6-1/2 inches (16 cm), specify Large . For those with a smaller diameter , specify Small .
33 First Time Setup —Continued • If the test tone is not produced by a speaker , or it’ s produced by a speaker other than that sho wn on the display , you may have wired your speakers incorrectly and you should check your connections (see page 17).

35 Playing Y our A V Components —Continued Y ou can display various information about the current input source as follows. The following information can typically be displayed for input sources. *If the input signal is analog, no format information is displayed.

When the input source is AM or FM: When tuned to an RDS radio station broadcasting PS information (Eur opean models only): *This information is displayed for about five seconds, then the previously displayed information reappears.
38 Common Functions This chapter explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Before performing any of the procedures in this chapter , press the [AMP] button first to select AMP mode. W ith this function you can adjust the brightness of the display .
39 Common Functions —Continued W ith this function you can temporarily mute the output of the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E. To unmute the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E, press the remote controller’ s [MUTING] b utton again, or adjust the volume. The output is unmuted and the MUTING indicator goes off.
40 Using the Listening Modes W ith its built-in surround-sound decoders and DSP pro- grams, the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E can transform your home listening room into a movie theater or concert hall. To get the most from surround sound, it’ s important that you install and configure your speakers correctly .

42 Using the Listening Modes —Continued Basic Modes Pure Audio (not North America) This mode turns off the display , turns off the video cir- cuitry , and minimizes any other possible noise sources, providing a high fidelity sound that’ s true to the original.
43 Using the Listening Modes —Continued DTS-ES DTS-ES supports up to 6.1 channels. The TX-SR502/ TX-SR502E supports both DTS-ES Discrete and DTS-ES Matrix. Discrete mode is for use with DTS 6.1 material. W ith an additional surround-back channel, each 6.
44 Using the Listening Modes —Continued If the Surr Back setting is set to anything other than None in the Speaker Configuration (page 32), and if the sur - round information in the current input signal is “ 3/2.1 ” or “ 3/3.1 (you can check the format of a digital input sig- nal on page 35, “Displaying Source Information.

46 Ad v anced Function These functions only work with speaker set A. Audio Adjust pro vides various functions for adjusting the sound. The Audio Adjust functions are explained below . ■ Double Bass The Double Bass function boosts the bass by feeding bass sounds from the front left and right channels to the subwoofer .
47 Adv anced Function —Continued 0 to 5 : Adjustable range. When set to 5, nothing is subtracted from the left and right channels. When set to 0, the left and right chan- nel lev els are halved (–6 dB), making the center channel more dominant, particularly useful when the listener is off-center .
48 Ad v anced Setup To get the best bass performance from your speaker sys- tem, you need to set the crossov er frequency according to the size and frequency response of your subwoofer and other speakers (front, center , and surround).
49 Adv anced Setup —Continued Notes: • The Center and Subwoofer distances can be set up to 5 ft. (1.5 m) more or less than the Front distance. For e xample, if the Front distance is set to 20 ft. (6 m), the Center and Subwoofer distances can be set between 15 and 25 ft.
50 Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the TX-SR502/TX-SR502E’ s remote con- troller (RC-567M/RC-569M) to control your other A V components, including those made by other manufactur - ers. T o do this you first need to enter the appropriate remote control code for your D VD player , TV , VCR, cable receiv er , or satellite receiv er .
51 Controlling Other Components —Continued Remote Control Codes When two or more codes are gi ven, try each one in turn, and choose the one that works best. Depending on the manufacturer and component, the remote controller may not work as expected.
