10 En About Home Theater Thanks to the A V receiv er’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound wi th a real sense of movement in your ow n home—just like being in a movie thea ter or concert hall. W ith Blu-ray Discs, you can enj oy DTS and Dolby Digital.
11 En Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 7.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need se ven speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
12 En • Don’t connect mo re than one cable to each speak er ter- minal. Doing so may damage the A V receiver. • Don’t connect one speaker to se veral terminals.
13 En Connecting a P o wered Subwoofer Using a suitable cable, c onnect the A V recei ver’ s SUB- WOOFER PRE OUT jack to an input on your pow- ered subwoofer , as show n. If your subwoofer is unpowered and you’ re using an external amp lifier , con- nect the SUBW OOFER PRE OUT jack to an input on the am p.
14 En Connected image with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve co mpleted and double-checke d all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to ma ke good connections (loo se connections can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
15 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assignments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 35 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 61 ) and “Using an RIHD-compatibl e TV , Player , or Recorder” ( ➔ 62 ).
16 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 35 ). *1 Connect a turntable (MM) that has a phono preamp built-in. If your turntable (MM) doesn’t hav e it, you’ll need a commercially av ailable phono preamp.
17 En Note • When you connect to both A UX INPUT A UDIO jacks and A UX INPUT LINE IN jack at the same time, AUX INPUT LINE IN jack will be gi ven a higher priority . • The A V receiv er can output audio and video signals from the AU X I N P U T jacks to the VCR/DVR OUT jacks.
18 En This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The A V receiv er won’t pick up an y radio signals without an y antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner . Cautio n • Be careful that you don’ t injure yourself when using thumbtacks.
19 En The A V recei ver supports se veral conn ection formats for comp atibilit y with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the fo rmats supported by your components.
20 En T urning On/Off the A V Receiver T urning On Press ON/ST ANDBY on the fr ont panel. or Press RECEIVER followed by ON/ST ANDBY on the remote co ntroller . The A V rece iv er comes on, the display lights, and the ST ANDBY indicator goes of f. T urning Off Press ON/ST ANDBY on the front panel or the r emote controller .
21 En Basic Operations ■ Operating on the A V receiver ■ Operating with the remo te controller Y ou can display v arious info rmation about the current input source as follows. (Components connected to the UNIVERSAL PORT jack are ex cluded.) Tip • Alternatively , you can use the A V receiv er’s DISPLA Y .
22 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute functi on is cancelled when the A V rece i ver is set to Standb y . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off aut omatically after a specif ied period.
23 En W ith the supplied calibra ted microphone, Audyssey 2EQ automatically de termines th e number of speakers con- nected, their size for purpos es of bass management, opti- mum crossov er frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the pr imary listening position.
24 En Note • When Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ A udyssey ” will be set to “ On ” ( ➔ 38 ). The A udyssey indicator will light ( ➔ 8 ). • Y ou can cancel Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup at any point in this proced ure simply by disconnecting the setup microphone.
25 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection.
26 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Selecting Presets Tip • Y ou can also use the remote c ontroller’ s number buttons to select a preset directly . Deleting Pres ets When tuned into an RDS station, the RDS indicator lights.
27 En Finding Statio ns by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by type. Listening to T raffic News (TP) Y ou can search for stations that broadcast traf fic ne ws. ■ RDS program types (PTY) 1 Pre ss RT/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display .
28 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from different sou rces. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V receiv er must be t urned on for reco rding.
29 En Using the Listening Modes See “ About Listening Modes” for detailed information about th e listening modes ( ➔ 30 ). This is hig h-resolution DTS with a 96 kHz sampling rate and 24-bit resolution, pro viding superior fidel- ity .
33 En Onkyo-Original DSP Listening Modes Note *1 (North American models) This listening mode is not av ailable. *2 When the input source contains th e encoded front high channel, front high speak ers output the sound. *3 If there are no surroun d back speakers, or Powered Zone 2 is being used, Dolby Pro Logic II is used.
34 En Ad vanced Setup Note The on-screen setup menus are displayed when: • There is no video in put, or • The video input is 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The on-screen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a con venient w ay to change the A V recei ver’ s va rious settings.
35 En Explanatory Notes Menu HDMI Input If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector . F or example, if you connect your Blu-ra y Disc/D VD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI2 ” to the “ BD/D VD ” input selector .
36 En Note • When an HDMI IN is assigned to an input selector in “HDMI Input” ( ➔ 35 ), this input assignment is automatically set to the same HDMI IN . And in addition to the usual inputs (e.g., CO AX1 , COAX2 , etc.), you can also select HDMI input s.
37 En ■ Double Bass Note • This function can be set only if the “ Sub woofer ” setting is set to “ Ye s ”, and the “ Front ” setting is set to “ Large ” ( ➔ 36 ). W ith the Double Bass functi on, you can boost bass out- put by feeding bass sounds from the front left, right, and center channels to the subwoofer .
38 En ■ Input Ch(Mono) ` L+R : Both the left and right channels are output. ` Left : Only the left channel is output. ` Right : Only the right channel is output. Dolby Settings PLIIx Music (2ch In put) These settings apply to only 2-channel stereo sources.
39 En Note • Audyssey equalizing does no t work for DSD sources. ■ Dynamic E Q ` Off : Audyssey Dy namic EQ off. ` On : Audyssey Dy namic EQ on. The Dynamic EQ indicator will light ( ➔ 8 ). W ith Audyssey Dynamic EQ™, you can enjoy great sound ev en when listening at low v olume lev els.
40 En Theater -Dimensional Sett ing ■ Listening Angle ` Wid e : Select if the listening angle is 40 degrees. ` Narro w : Select if the listening angle is 20 degrees. W ith this setting, you can optimize the Theater -Dimen- sional listening mode by specifying the angle of the front left and right speakers relati ve to the listening position.
41 En Remote Contr ol Settings ■ Remote ID ` 1 , 2 , or 3 When sev eral Onkyo components are used in the same room, their remote ID codes may overlap. T o dif ferenti- ate the A V recei ver from th e other components, you can change its remote ID from “ 1 ”, to “ 2 ” or “ 3 ”.
42 En ■ HDMI Control (RIHD) ` Off : p disabled. ` On : p enabled. This function allo ws p -compatible components connected via HDMI to be contro lled with the A V receiv er ( ➔ 15 ). Note • When set to “ On ” and close the menu, the name of connect ed p -compatible components and “ RIHD On ” are dis- played on the A V receiver.
43 En Y ou can change various a udio settings b y pressing AU D I O . Note These settings are disabl ed when: • a pair of headph ones is connected, or •t h e “ A udio TV OUT ” setting is set to “ On ” ( ➔ 41 ) and an input selector other than HDMI is selected.
44 En CinemaFIL TER W ith the CinemaFIL TER, you can soften overly bright movie soundtracks, which are typically mixed for repro- duction in a movie theater .
45 En The digital input si gnal formats are av ailable only for the input sources that you hav e a ssigned a digital input jack ( ➔ 35 ). Normally , the A V receiv er detects the signal format auto- matically .
46 En Zone 2 In addition to your main listening room, you can also enjoy pla yback in the other room, or as we call Zone 2. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two w ays you can connect Zone 2 speak ers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiv er.
47 En If you’ ve connected your Zone 2 speakers to the A V receiv er, as explained in “C onnecting Y our Zone 2 Speak- ers Directly to the A V re ceiv er” ( ➔ 46 ), you must set the “ Front Hi gh/Zone2 ” setting to “ Zone2 ”.
48 En Contro lling Zone 2 with the Remote Contro ller Note • T o control Zone 2, you must press the remote controller’ s ZONE2 firs t. Adjusting the V olume for Zone 2 ■ Operating with the remot.
49 En Contr olling iP od Models sold are dif ferent depending on the re gion. Connecting an Onky o Doc k B A *1 C No. Onkyo Dock Cable Note Pa ge A UP-A1 Dock (Universal Port Option Dock) — • When UP-A1 Dock th at seated iPod is connected, the powe r consumption on standby mode slightly increases.
50 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the musi c, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
51 En RI Dock W ith the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod through the A V recei ver and enjoy great sound, and watch iPod slidesho ws and videos on your TV .
52 En ✔ : A vailable b uttons Models sold are different dep ending on the region. Note • With some iPod models, generatio ns and RI Docks, certain butto ns may not work as e xpected. • For detailed operation of the iPod, please re fer to the instruction manual of RI Dock.
53 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote controller (RC-764M) to control your ot her A V components. This section explains ho w to ente r the remote control code (with the default underlined ) for a component that you want to control: D V D, TV , CD, etc.
54 En If you want to control an Onkyo component b y pointing the remote controller direct ly at it, use the following re mote control codes: ` 32900 : Onkyo Blu-ray Disc player ` 32901 : Onkyo HD-D VD.
55 En Note • With some components, certain buttons may no t work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : A vailable b uttons *1 The p function is not supp orted. The p sup- ported by the A V receiver is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.

61 En About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demand s of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Mult im edia Interface) is a new digita l interface standard for connect ing TVs, projectors, Blu-ray Disc players/D VD players, se t-top boxes, and other video components.
62 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV , Play er , or Recorder p , which stands for Remote Interacti ve o ver HDMI, is the name of the system control function found on Onkyo components. The A V recei ver can be us ed with C EC (Consumer Electronics Cont rol), which allo ws system control over HDMI and is part of the HDMI standard.
63 En ■ How to connect and setup 1 Confirm the connecting and setting . 1. Connect the HDMI OUT jack to the HDMI input jack of the TV . 2. Connect the audio output from the TV to the OPTICAL IN 2 jack of the A V recei ver using an optical digital cable.
