5 PREP ARA TION POWERING THE RECO RDER For portable use, you can p ower the recorder from inter- nal b a tteries. You can also power it from a standard A C outlet or your vehicle’s cigarette-lighter soc ket. Using In ternal Batte ry Po wer The recorde r uses t wo AA batteries.
6 Follow these steps to inst all batteries. 1. Slide the battery compartmen t cover in the direction shown by the arrow on t he c over . 2. Install two AA batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and –) marked on the back of t he recorder .
7 Importa nt: Your recorder i s capable of using r e charge- able nickel-c admium batteries. At the end of the batteries ’ useful life, they mus t be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste manag ement autho r ities for in formation on recycling or dispos al programs in your area.

9 Using DC Power To po wer the recorder from you r vehicle’s c igarette-lighter socket, you need a DC adapter (not supplied), such as Cat. No. 270-1560 . Cautions: • Y ou must use an adapter that supplies 3 v olts and delivers at le ast 300 milliamps.
10 Follow these steps to power the recorder from your vehi- cle’s cigaret te-l ighter socket . 1. Set the adapter ’s voltage switch to 3V . 2. Attach the 3.4 mm outer di a meter/1.3 mm inner diameter barrel plug to the DC adapter ’s c o rd wi th the t ip s et to n e ga ti ve (– ).
11 USING T HE EARPHONE You can u se the e arphone for private l i stening. You can also m onitor a recordi ng and c heck the m icrophone’s sensitivity (see “Using Vo ice Activation (VOX)” o n Page 16). Insert the earphone’s 1 / 8 -inch plug in to the EAR jack.
12 Liste ning S afely To protect your h earing, follow th ese guidelin es when you u se an earphone. • Do not l isten at extremely high v olume levels. Extende d high-volume listening can lead to perma- nent h earing loss. • Set the volume t o its lowest level before you b egin listening.
13 OPER A TION LOADING A CASSETTE T APE 1. T ake up a ny s lack i n t he ca ssett e tape by t urning the hub with a p encil to prevent the tape from be c omin g tangl ed in t he tape m echanism. Do not touch the tape. 2. Open t he ca ssette com partment d oor by lifting it at the n otch.
14 PLA YING A T APE 1. Load a cassette. 2. Press PLA Y . 3. Adjust VOLUME to the desired level. 4. T o stop the tape, press STOP or le t the t ape auto- matically stop when it reaches the end.
15 USIN G F AST-F AN D REWIND To rapidly a dvance or rewind the tape, pres s FA S T - F or REWIND . The button l ocks, and t he tape fast -for- wards or rewinds to the end or u ntil y ou press ST OP . W hen the tape reaches the end, press STOP to r e- lease t he but ton and the tape-handling parts.
16 RECORDING Notes: • W e recommend you use normal bias (T ype I) c a s- sette tapes, such as RadioShack LN and XR tape. • W e recommend regular leng th (60- or 90-minute) cassette tapes. We do not recommend lon g-play cas- sette tape s, such as C-120 s, because t hey are thin and can easily tangle.

19 If y ou later dec ide to rec ord on a tape sid e after y ou hav e removed t he erase-protect ion tab, place a piece of strong plastic tape ov er that side’s erase-prot ection hole. Be sure you cover on ly the ho le originally covered by the erase-protect ion tab.
20 MAINTENANCE Your CTR-106 Voice-Activated Cassette T ape Recorder is an ex amp le of s upe rior design and craftsmans hi p. The followin g s uggest ions w ill help you c are f or y our r eco rder so you can enjoy it for yea rs. Keep the recorder dry.
21 Use only fresh batte r ies of the require d size a nd type. Batt eries can leak c hemicals that dam age y our recorder’s elect r o nic parts. W ipe the record er with a damp cloth occ a- sionally to keep it l ooking new. Do n ot use harsh che micals, clea ning solvents, or strong detergent s to clean the recorder.
22 1. Disconnect all power sources. 2. Open t he ca ssette com partment door . 3. Hold down the erase protec tion tab sensor , then press RECORD to expose the tape-handling parts. 4. Use a cotton swab dipped i n denatured alcohol or tape hea d-cleaning solu tion to clea n the record/ play head, pin ch roller , capstan, erase h ead, and tape guides.
