The tuner’s P LL (Pha se-L ocked Loop ) circuitry gives you precise tuning and drift-free reception.
3 PHO NES Jack — lets you connect headpho nes for pri- vate lis tening, or speakers to sha re the sound with ot h- ers. Rem ovable Belt Cl ip — lets you atta ch the S CP -85 to your belt for hands-free carrying when you are on the go.
4 PREP ARA TION INST ALLIN G BA TTERIES Your SCP-85 is powe red by two AA batteries (not sup- plied). We recom mend a lkaline bat teries (such as Ra- dioShack Cat. No. 23-557). You can also use rechargeable nick el-cadmium bat teries (Cat. No. 23- 125).
5 2. Press the battery compartment cover ’s tab in the direction of the arrow . The cover pops open. 3. Insta ll the batteries as in dicated by the po larity sym- bols (+ and –) marked inside cover . 4. Close th e battery compart ment cover a nd the cas - sette compartmen t’s door and cover .
6 • T o keep the preset stations stored in mem ory , turn the radio off before removin g batteries and replace th e batteri es within 45 seconds. Cautio ns: • Never leav e dead or weak batteries i n the SC P-85. • If you do not plan t o use t he S CP- 85 for a mont h or more, remo ve the bat teries.
7 Remove th e rubber plug from the SCP -85’s PHONES jack and insert the headphones’ or spe akers’ 1 / 8 -i n c h plug i nto t he PHONES jack. Replace the plug when you remove the headphone s or speakers from the SCP-85. Listen ing Safely To protec t your heari ng, follow these guidel ines when you use headph ones .
8 T raf fic Safety Do not wear headphones while operat ing a motor vehicle or r iding a bicycl e. This ca n creat e a traf fic haza rd and can b e illega l in som e areas. Even t hough some headph ones let you hear som e out- side sound s when list ening at normal vol ume levels, they still can present a tr affic haz ard.
9 USING THE RADIO LIST ENING TO THE R ADIO Importa nt: M a ke sure that you have connecte d head- phones or speakers to the SCP -85. See “Using Head- phones o r Speakers ” o n Page 6. 1. Press RADIO ON/OFF to turn on the radi o. The dis- play s hows the current rad io stat ion’s frequency .
10 Note: For FM stereo reception, open the cassette compartment cover and door , and s et STEREO/MONO to STEREO . ST appears on t he display when an FM station is received in stereo. 4. T une to the desired station. M anu al Tu ni ng: Repeat edly press DIGIT AL SCAN Ÿ or ⁄ to tune up or down the selected band.
11 Notes: • The SC P-85 has a built-in AM antenna , and t h e headphone s’ or speakers’ cord serves as an FM antenn a. For the best AM rece ption, rotate the SCP -85. F or the be st FM recept ion, fully uncoil th e headphone s’ or speakers’ cord.
12 ST O RING RADIO ST A T IONS IN MEM ORY You can store up to 20 radio st ations (1 0 FM and 10 A M) in memory . The n you can qui ckly tune t o a stored station by pressing a mem ory button (or +5 and a memo ry but- ton ). Follow these steps to s tore stations in memory.
13 5. T o store sta tions into mem ory locations 1-5, while MEMO flashes on t h e display , press the memory loca- tion button ( 1 - 5 ) where you want to store the c urrent frequency . Th e di splay s hows CH , the memory chan- nel n umb er , a nd t he freq uency .

T une to the next station you want to store, then repeat St eps 4 an d 5. To replace a station you stored, simply store a new sta- tion in that mem ory l ocation.

See “Using Head- phones o r Speakers ” o n Page 6. 1. Push open t he cassette compart ment’s cover , then push ope n the casse tte compart ment’s d oor .
16 3. Insert the cassette tape i nto the c assette compart- ment with the des ired sid e facing you, the full reel t o the righ t, and t he open end f acing up.
17 6. Adju st VOLUME to a com fortab le listening level. 7. Set E-BASS ON/OFF to ON for extra bass eff ect, or to OFF to leave the bass sound unchanged.

19 T APE TIPS AND TECHN IQUES CLEANING THE T APE-HA NDLING P ART S Dirt, dust , or particles of th e tape’s coating can accumu- late o n the tape heads an d oth er parts that the tap e touches. This can greatly red uce the performance of th e SCP- 85.
20 Your local RadioShack store carries a full line of cassette deck cle aning supplies . REST O RING T APE TENSION AND SOUND QUAL ITY After you p lay a cassette s everal times, the t ape mig ht become t ightly wound on t he reels. This can caus e play- back soun d qu ality t o deteriorate.
