6 PREPARATION BEFORE Y OU BEGIN To pr otect the playback head duri ng ship m ent, a protect ive slee ve is a ttache d. R emove it befor e you use the SCP-87’s casset te p layer.
7 Caution: Do not mi x old and new b atter ies, dif ferent types of bat teries (st andard, alka line, or rech arge- able), or r ec hargeable bat teries of di fferent cap aci- tie s.
8 If t he BATT indicat or becomes di m duri ng operatio n or d oes not li ght when yo u turn on t he SCP-87, re- plac e (alka l ine) or rech arge (nick el-cadmium ) both batt eries. Cauti on: Alway s dispose of old bat teries pr omptly and p r operly.
9 Using A C P ower To power th e SCP-87 from a sta ndard AC out le t, you need an AC adapter , such as Cat. No. 273- 1654. Cautions : • Y ou must use an A C adapt er tha t s upplies 3 vol ts DC pow er and del i v ers at least 300 milli - amps .
10 Foll ow these st eps t o connect the SCP-87 to AC power. 1. Set the adapte r’ s v ol tage s wit ch to 3V . 2. I nser t the adapt er’ s 3.4 mm outer di ameter/1. 3 mm inn er di am et er tip int o the ada pter’ s cord, so it reads –TIP . 3. I nser t the pl ug in to the SCP-87’ s DC 3V ja c k.
11 Using Y our V ehic le’ s Ba t tery P ower To power the SCP- 87 from your v ehicle’s battery , you need a DC adapter , such as Cat. No. 270- 1560. Cautions : • Y ou must use a DC adapt er that supplies 3 v olt s DC powe r and d eliv e rs at least 30 0 milli amps.

22 MANUAL T UNING Press T UNING UP or DO W N t o tune up or down the band. SEEK T UN ING Hold down TUNING U P or DO WN for about 1– 2 sec- onds. The SCP-87 automati cally s earches u p or down th e band and st ops when i t finds the next str ong station.
23 Storing Sta tions A utomaticall y You can se t the SCP-87 to search t he sel ected band and sto re the first six st ations i t finds into memory lo- catio ns 1–6. 1. Press RADIO ON/ OFF until the desir ed band appears . 2. Hold do wn A UTO PRESET f or about 1–2 sec - onds.

30 CHANGING THE T APE DIRECTION You can change th e tape’ s direc ti on to pl ay the other side using t he FWD/ REV s wit ch. T o li st en t o the tape’ s forwar d side (faci ng out), set the switch to FWD . To l isten to the tap e’ s reverse si de (facin g in), s et th e s witch to REV .
31 USING FAST-FORWARD AND REWIND When the tape is st opped, press or to re- wind or fa st-forwar d i t. To stop t he t ap e befo re it reaches the end, p ress ST OP . Note: To protect t he tape after th e tape has fully wound to ei ther end, press ST OP t o rele ase the or button.
32 DOLBY NOISE REDUCTION Your cassett e pla yer uses t he Dolb y B Nois e-Reduc- ti on syst em to r educe bac kground noi se or tape hiss on your tapes. When a Dol by-encod ed tape is r e- corde d, the Dolby c ircuit listens t o the pr ogram mate- ria l to find soft passages where you might l ater be able to hear the tape noi se.
33 TA P E T I P S The foll owing tips can help you get the best perfor- mance and the lon gest life from you r SCP-87. Note: For the bes t performanc e, use onl y r eg ular lengt h (60- or 90- minute ) cassett e tapes. We do not recomm end long-pl aying cassette tapes, such as C- 120s, beca use they are extr emely thi n a nd can tan- gle e asily .
34 CLEANING THE T A PE-HANDLING PA R T S Dirt , dust, or par ticles of the tap e’s coa ting can ac cu- mulat e o n the tape heads and other par ts the tape touch es.
