5 PREP A RA TI ON CONNECTING POWER Using Batter ies To power the SCP-90 with batteries, you need two AA batt eries (not suppl ied) . We rec ommend al kaline batte ries, such as Radi oShack Cat. No . 23- 557. Follo w t hese steps to in stall batt erie s.
6 3. Instal l the ba tteries over the r ibbon, as ind icated by the p olari ty symbo ls (+ and –) mar ked ins ide the co m partment . Cautions: • Use on ly fresh batter ies o f the requ ired s ize and recomm ended t ype.

8 • Always conne ct t he a dapter to the SCP-90 ’s DC 3V j ack befor e you conn ect it t o the AC out let. Then disc onnect t he adapt er from the AC o ut let before di sco nnecting it fr om the SCP-90 . Follow these steps to power the SCP-90 from a st an- dard AC outle t.
9 5. Plug the ad apter into a sta ndard AC outle t. Notes: • I n ternal batt eries (if install ed) automat ically dis - connect whe n you plug the AC adapter int o the SCP-90. • Di s connect the ad apter and reinser t th e jack ’s rubber plug when yo u are not usin g the SCP-90.
10 Cautions: • The recom mended DC adapt er suppl ies 3 vol ts and deli vers at least 250 milli amps. It s center tip is set to negati ve, and its ba rr el plu g cor rect ly fits the SCP-90’ s DC 3V jack. Using an ad apter t hat does not meet these spec ificat ions coul d dam- age the SCP-90 or the adapt er .

12 CONNECTING THE HEADPHONES OR SP EAKERS To li sten t o your SCP-90, con nect the suppli ed in-ear sports headphones ( or othe r headphon es) or a pa ir of amplif ied speakers (no t suppl ied) with a 1 / 8 -in ch mini plu g.
13 Listening Safely To protec t your hear ing, fo llow th ese guidel ines when you use the head phones. • Set the vol ume to the lowes t setting be fore you begin l istenin g. Afte r you begin l isten ing, adjus t the v olume t o a c omfortabl e leve l.

15 RADIO O PERA TION Importan t: Make sure y ou have c onnected hea d- phones or spe akers to th e SCP-90. 1. Set RADIO OF F/T APE/FM ST/AM to FM ST or AM to t urn on the radio. 2. Adjust VOLUME to th e desi red l isten ing l evel. 3. Tur n T UNING to se l ect the d esire d stat ion.

21 T APE TIPS T ape Quality For t he best perfo rmance, use onl y regul ar lengt h (60- or 90-minut e) casset te tapes. We do not recom - mend long- playi ng casset te tape s, such as C-120s , becau se they are ext reme ly thin and ca n easily ta n- gle i n th e play back mec hanism.

24 CLEANING THE T APE-HANDLING PARTS Dirt, dust , or par ticles of the tape’ s coati ng can accu- mulate o n the ta pe head and o ther par ts t hat the tap e touches. This can r educe the SCP-90’s perf ormance. Follow t hese steps to cl ean the tape-hand ling par ts after about every 20 ho urs of tape playe r oper ation .
25 4. Use a cot ton swab dipped i n denat ured al cohol or tape hea d clea ning soluti on to clean th e play- back h ead, pinc h rol ler , capst an and tape guides. 5. When you f inish cl eaning, press STOP , rein stal l batte ries (if nec essary) , and clo se the compart - ment door and l atch.
