Prepara tion 10 Quic k Guide This is the ov erview of the procedure to record and play bac k pictures with this camera. F or each operation, be sure to refer to t he corre sponding pages. 1 Char g e the battery . (P11) • When the camera is shipped, the battery i s not c harged.
Preparation 11 Char ging the Battery with the Char ger When the c amera is shipped, the battery is not charged. Charge the battery before use . 1 Attach the b attery with attention to the direction of the battery . 2 Connect the A C cable. • The AC cable does not fit entirely into the A C input ter minal.

Preparation 13 Inserting /Remov ing the Bat tery • Check that the camer a is tur ned off and that the lens is retracted. 1 Slide the car d/battery doo r to open it. • Please be sure to use genuine P anasonic batter ies (CGA-S004E). 2 Insert: Insert the ch arged battery with attention to the direction of the battery .
Prepara tion 14 Inserting /Remo ving the Card • C heck that the camera is tur ned off and that the lens is retracted. 1 Slide the c ard/battery door to open it . • The card a nd the data may be damaged if it i s inserted or removed while the camera is on.
Preparation 15 About the Car d ∫ Access to the card While the card is being accessed (Recognizing/Recording/Reading/ Deleting), the c ard access indication 1 lights. When the c ard access indication 1 light s, do not: • turn the camera off. • remov e th e battery or the card.
Prepara tion 16 Appr o ximate number of recor dable pic tures and the si z e • If you select a larger picture siz e, you ca n print pictures clearly . When y o u select a smaller picture size, you can store more pictures on a card though the picture quality is deteriorated.
Preparation 17 Setting Date/ Time (Cloc k Set) ∫ Initial setting The clock is not set when t he camera is shipped. When you turn the camera on, the follo wing screen appears. • When pressing the [MENU] button, the screen shown in step 2 appears. • The screen disappears in about 5 seconds.
Prepara tion 18 • When fully charged batter y has bee n inser ted f or mo re than 24 hours, the cloc k setting is st ored (in the camera) for at least 3 months e ven if the batter y is removed. (The storing time ma y be shor ter if the battery is not charged sufficiently .
Preparation 19 Setup Men u 1 T urn the camera on. • Set the mode dial to an y position, e.g. Normal Picture mode [ ], e xcept Playbac k mode [ ] , Simple mode [ ] and Scene mode [ ] positions. 2 Press the [MENU] b utton. • The menu items depe nd on the mode selected with the mode dial.
Prepara tion 20 Y ou can control the f ollowing items on [SETUP] Menu. Menu Funct ions MONITOR Adjust the br ightness of the LCD monitor in 7 steps. A UT O RE VIEW [OFF]: The recorded picture does not aut omatically appear . [1SEC .]: The recorded picture automatically appears on the screen for about 1 second.
Preparation 21 Menu F unctions ECONOMY (works in modes ex c ept pla yback mode and simple mode) The batter y life is sav ed by turning the LCD monitor off automatically . (Press any button to c ancel the economy mode.) [OFF]: Economy mode cannot be activated.
Prepara tion 22 • The se ttings on [BEE P LEVEL ], [BEE P T ONE] ( DMC-FX7) , [BEE P] (DMC -FX2), [NO.RESET] and [LANGU A GE ] also af fect on simple mode [ ]. Menu Funct ions VIDEO OUT (Playbac k mode only) [NTSC ]: Video output is set to NT SC system.
Preparation 23 About the LCD Monitor ∫ Selecting the screen to be used A LCD monitor (LCD) Press the [DISPLA Y/PWR LCD] b utton to switch to the screen to be used. • When the menu sc reen appears, the [DIS PLA Y/ PWR L CD] butt on is not activated.
Prepara tion 24 ∫ T o view the LCD monito r outdoor s easier (P ower LCD function) When you keep pressing the [DISPLA Y / PWR LCD] button f or 1 second, the power LCD function is ac tiv ated, the LCD monitor becomes br ighter than usual and easier to be seen outdoors.
Preparation 25 ∫ Histogram • A histogram is a g raph that displa ys brightness along the horizontal axis (b lack to white) and the number of pixels at each brightness lev el on the v er tical axis. • It allows the camera user t o easily check the wa y a picture is being exposed.

Recording pictures (basic) 28 ∫ AF/AE Lock (AF: Au to focus/ AE: Aut o exposure) When recording a picture of people with a composition as the abov e picture, y ou cannot f ocus on t h e subject because it is out of AF area in usual operation. In this cas e, 1 Aim the AF area at the subject.
Recording pictu res (basic) 29 ∫ Focusing • The focus range is 50 cm – ¶ (Wide), 50 cm– ¶ (T ele). • If you press the shutter button fully without prefocusing, pictures may be blurry or unfocused. • When the focus indication is blinking, the subject is not f ocused.
Recording pictures (basic) 30 • When you press the shutter button, the screen may become bright f or a moment. This function allows easy adjustment of focus and t he recorded picture will not be affected. • We recommend making sure the clock is set properly before taking pictures.

The subjects such as people become dar k when pictures are recorded in the backlight. If you press 3 , [ ] (comp ensating backlight ON indication) appears and the backlight compensation function is activated.
Recording pictures (basic) 34 Checking th e Recorded Pic ture ( Re vi ew) 1 Press 4 . • The last recorded picture appears for about 10 seconds. • Press the shutter button halfwa y or 4 to cancel the revie w . • Y ou can check other pictures by pressing 2 / 1 .
Recording pictu res (basic) 35 Using the Opti cal Zoom Y ou can m ake people and subjects appear closer with the 3 tim es optical zoom, and landscapes can be recorded in w ide angle.

Recording pictures (basic) 40 Compensa ting the Expos ure Use this function when y ou cannot achiev e appropriate exposure due to t he difference of brightness between the subject and the background. 1 Press 3 se veral times u ntil [ EXPOSURE] appears and then compe nsate the e xposure.
Recording pictu res (basic) 41 T aking Pictur es using A uto Brac ket In this mode, 3 pictures are automatically recorded by each press of the shutter button according to the compensation range of the e xposure. Y ou can select the desired e xposure among the 3 types of pictures.
Recording pictures (basic) 42 Optical Image Stabilizer [ST ABILIZER] This mode recognizes and compensates jitters. Y ou can reduce blurring c aused by jitters when y ou hold the camera with one hand f or taking a picture of yourself or when you take pictures indoors where the shutter speed is slow e d down.

Playback (basic) 47 Deleting Pic tures ∫ T o delete a single p ictu re 1 Select the pic ture to be deleted. • 2 : Play back the previous picture. • 1 : P la y back the n e xt picture. 2 Del ete t he pi ctur e. • While deleting the picture, [ ] appears on the screen .
Playback (ba sic) 48 3 Delete the pictures. • It is p ossible to delete up to 50 pictures all at once. ∫ T o dele te all pictures 1 Select [ALL DEL ETE]. 2 Delete all o f the pictures. • Once deleted, pictures cannot be recov ered. P lease double-check bef ore deleting pictures.
Recording pictu res (advanced) 49 Recording pictures (advanced) Usi ng th e Mode D ial This mode allows you to take close-up pictures of the subject, e.g. When taking pictures of f lowers. Y ou can take pictures wit h the lens at a distance of up to 5 cm (Wide) from the subject.

Recording pictu res (advanced) 51 • The motion images recorded with setting [MO TION RA T E] to [30fps] cannot be play ed back on a camera which does not suppor t [30fps] of motion rate. • The re view function cannot be used. • Y ou cannot set [MODE2] on the Optical Image Stabilizer function.

Recording pictu res (advanced) 53 This mode allows you to take pictures of a fast mo ving subject. (e.g. When taking pictures of outdoor spor ts.) ∫ T ech nique for Sports mode T o recor d actions of the s ubject as if it were still, the shutter speed becomes f a ster than usual.
Recording pictures (advanced ) 54 This mode allows you to take a picture of a nightscape. The l and scape can be recorded vividly by using the slo w shutter speed. ∫ T echnique f or Night scenery mode • Since the shutter speed becomes slow (max. about 8 sec.
Recording pictu res (advanced) 55 This mode allows you to tak e beautiful pictures of fireworks exploding in the night sky . The sh utter speed or the exposure is automatically adjuste d for taking pictures of firew orks. ∫ T ech nique for Fir ew orks mode • We recommend using a tr ipod.
Recording pictures (advanced ) 56 This mode allows you to tak e a picture in locations such as skiing grounds and locations near s nowy mountains. The ex posure and the white balance ar e adjusted to make t he white colour of the snow stand out. This mode allows y ou to take a pict ure of yourself .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 57 • The self-timer can b e set to [OFF] or [2SEC.] . ( P39) When you set to [2SEC .], it is kept until the camera is tur ned [OFF] or you s w itch the mode. • The stabilizer function is fixed to [MODE2]. (P42) • The setting on the AF assist lam p is disabled.
Recording pictures (advanced ) 58 Using the [REC] mode men u Setting the hue, picture quality adjustment, etc. allows y ou to create wide variations on taking pictures. • Set the mode dial to the desired recording mode. • When rotating the zoom le ver tow ard T or W , the page of the menu scre en can be forw ar ded or rev ersed.
Recording pictu res (advanced) 59 This function allows y ou to reproduce a white colour clos er to the tone in real life on the pictures recorded under sunlight, halogen lighting, etc.
Recording pictures (advanced ) 60 ∫ Setting the White Balance manually (White set ) Use this mode wh en you want to set the white balance manually . 1 Set to [ ] (White set) and then press 1 . 2 Aim the camera at a sheet of white paper or a similar white object so that the frame on the centre of the screen t urns wh ite and then press 1 .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 61 ISO sensitivity represents the sensitivity to light in values . If you set the ISO sensitivity higher , the camera bec omes more s uitab le for recording in dar k places. • When setting to [AUT O ], the ISO sensitivity is automatically adjusted in t he range described belo w according to the brightness.
Recording pictures (advanced ) 62 Y ou can select 2 types of quality (compression rate) according to the usage of the picture. • Pictu res ma y have a mosaic-lik e appearance depending on the subject or the recording condition. • The number of recordable pictures depends on t he subject.
Recording pictu res (advanced) 63 • When setting to 3-area-focusing, p ictures may be come still while being f ocused on, howe ver , t his is not a malfunct ion. • In the digital zoom or when you tak e pictures in dark places, the AF area is display ed on the centre of the screen with a size wider than usual.
Recording pictures (advanced ) 64 Illuminating the subject with the AF assist lamp allo ws the camera to focus on the subject in low light conditions. When you press the shutter button halfwa y in dark places or other situations, an AF area wider than usual appears and the AF assist lamp 1 turns on.
Recording pictu res (advanced) 65 It is possible to fur ther m agnify a subject already magnified 3 times with the optical zoom by 4 more times with the digital zoom, thereby reach ing a maximum of 12 time s.
Recording pictures (advanced ) 66 This camera allows y ou to create motion picture files up t o 20 seconds long by connecting images recorded in flip animation mode. Example: When capturing images of the subject in sequence moving the camera li ttle by little and aligning the images, the subject looks as if it i s moving.

Playback (ad vanced) 70 Using the [PLA Y] mode menu Y ou can rotate and displa y the recorded pictures in steps of 90°. Playback (advan ced) 71 • Still pictures can only be rotated in norm al play back. When pla ying back rotated pictures in zoom pla yback or multi play back, pictures appear in original orientation.
Playback (ad vanced) 72 ∫ Single s etting Select the picture and set the number of prints . • The number of prints can be set from 0 to 999. • The number of prints icon [ ] appe ars. • When the number of pr ints is set to “0”, DPOF pr int setting is cancelled.
Playback (advan ced) 73 • DPOF print setting is a conv enient function when you print pictures with printers suppor ting DPOF pr inting. (P86) • DPOF is t he abbre viation for Digital Pr int Order F o rmat.
Playback (ad vanced) 74 • C lose the menu by pressing the [MEN U] button 2 times after fi nish ing the sett ing/ cancelling. ∫ Multi settin g/T o cancel al l settings P erform the same operation as in [Setting the Picture to be Printed and the Number of Prints [ DPOF PRINT]].
Playback (advan ced) 75 • When the cam era is connected to TV , the audio of the pictures w ith audio can be play ed back during Slide Show . 3 Select [ST ART].
Playback (ad vanced) 76 Y ou can record the audio after taking a picture (maximum 10 seconds per picture). 1 Select [A UDIO DUB.]. 2 Select the picture and sta r t audio recor ding. • When audio has already been recorded, the c onfirma tion screen appears.
Playback (advan ced) 77 This function is useful if you want to reduce the file size of the picture in cases when it needs to be attached to an e-m ail or uploaded to a website . 1 Select [RESIZE]. 2 Select the pic ture and set it. • The f ollowing pictures cannot be resized.
Playback (ad vanced) 78 Use this mode wh en you trim unwanted par ts of the recorded picture. 1 Select [TRIM MING]. 2 Select the p icture to trim an d set it.
Playback (advan ced) 79 4 Shift the pictur e and press the shutter b utton full y to set. 5 Select [YES] or [NO] and set it. • When you select [Y E S], the picture is ov erwritten. • When the original picture is protected, you cannot ov erwrite the resized picture.
Playback (ad vanced) 80 • U sually , it is not necessar y to format the card. Format the c ard when the me ssage [MEMORY CARD E RROR] appears . • If the card has been f or matted by a PC or other equipment, f o rmat the card on the camera again. • Once the card is formatted, all data including pr otected images are irretriev ably erased.
Playback (advan ced) 81 Play ing Bac k Pictures on a T V Screen The procedure for DM C-FX7 is described below . In the case of DMC-FX2, connect the TV and the [V . OUT] terminal on the camera with the video cable (supplied). ∫ Playing back pictures with the supplied cable • T ur n the camera and the TV off.
Connectin g to a PC or Printer 82 Connecting to a PC or Printer Bef ore Connec ting with USB Conn ection Cab le [ : USB MODE ] Select the USB communication syst em according to t he OS of your PC or your printer before connecting them to the cam era wit h the USB connection cable (supplied).
Connecting to a PC or Printer 83 ∫ When usi ng Windows 98/98 SE When using Windows 98/98 SE, install the USB driv er before connecting. (When using Windows Me/2000/XP , Mac OS 9.x and Mac O S X, you do not have to install the USB driv er .) ∫ When using Windows 2000 Professional, Windows Me, Windows 98/98 SE or Mac OS 9.
Connectin g to a PC or Printer 84 Conn ect ing t o a PC • R ef er to the separate operat ing instructions about PC connection. • If you use Windows 98/98SE , install t he USB driver and then connect it to the computer. • When using Win dows Me/2000/XP , Mac OS 9.
Connecting to a PC or Printer 85 ∫ PC [Windo ws] The dr iv e appears on the [My Com puter] folder . • If it is the first time y ou are connecting the camera to a PC , the r equired driver is installed automatically so that the camer a can be recognized b y the Windows Plug and Play , then it appears on the [My C omp uter] folder.
Connectin g to a PC or Printer 86 Connectin g to a PictBrid g e-com pliant Printer By connecting the camera directly to a printer suppor ting PictBridge via the USB connection cable (supplied), you can select the pictures to be printed or start printing.
Connecting to a PC or Printer 87 • Set the print settings such as paper size or print quality on the printer bef orehand. (Read the pr inter operating instruct ions.) • Connect the camera to a pr inter . (P86) ∫ Singl e picture 1 Select a pict ure to be printed .
