- 9 - ∫ About batteries that you can use with this unit The battery that can be used with this unit is VW-VBL090/VW -VBK180/VW -VBK360. Inserting/removing the battery ≥ Press the power button to turn off the unit. ( l 15) Inst all the batte ry by inserting it in the direction show n in the figure.
- 10 - Charging the battery ∫ Charging w ith an AC adap tor . The unit is in the st andby condit ion when the A C adaptor is c onnected. The primary cir cuit is always “live” as long as the AC adaptor is connected to an electric al outlet. Important: ≥ Be sure to use the supplied AC adaptor and US B cable.
- 1 1 - ∫ Connecting to the AC outlet If you turn on the unit whil e connecting with t he AC adaptor , you can use t he unit with power supplied from the out let. When recordin g for a long time, keep the AC adaptor conn ected and use it toget her with the ba ttery .

- 14 - Inserting/removing an SD c ard Caution: Check tha t the acce ss lamp has gone off . 1 Open the LCD monitor . 2 Open the SD card cover an d inse rt ( remo ve) the S D card into (from) the card slot B . ≥ Face the label sid e C in the directio n shown in the illus tration and press it straight in as far as it will go.
- 15 - Y ou can turn the unit on a nd off using th e power butt on or b y opening and closing t he LCD monitor . Open the LCD mo nitor and press the p ower button to turn on the unit. - 18 - ∫ Basi c ca mera pos iti onin g 1 Hold the unit wit h both hands. 2 Put your ha nd through the grip belt. ≥ When record ing, make sure your footing is stable and ther e is no danger of colliding with another per son or object. ≥ When you are ou tdoors, record pict ures with the sunligh t behind you.

- 20 - ≥ The images rec orded between pres sing the recording start/st op button to st art recording and press ing it again to pa use recording beco me one scene. The scenes longer tha n approximately 2 0 minutes will be automat ically divided. (Recording will continue.
- 21 - ≥ Open the lens c over before tur ning on the unit . ( l 7) 1 Change the m ode to and open the LCD m onitor . 2 Press the button. ∫ About the screen indication s in Still Picture Recording ≥ During motion pic ture recording or when set to PRE-REC, yo u cannot record still pictures.
- 22 - The followi ng modes (appropriate for the condi tion ) are set just by poin ting the unit to what you want t o record. ≥ Depending on t he recording condit ions, the unit may not ent er the desired mode. ≥ In the Portrai t, S potlight and Low ligh t mode, the face will be s urrounded by white frame when detec ted.
- 23 - ∫ Intelligent Aut o Mode When switching to Int elligent Auto Mode, the Auto White Ba lance and Auto Focus operate and automat ically adjust t he colour balan ce and focusing. Dependi ng on the brightness of the subje ct etc., the apert ure and shutte r speed are automati cally adjusted f or an optimum brightne ss.
- 24 - 1 Change the m ode to . 2 Select the p lay mode se lect icon A using 3 / 4 / 2 and press th e ENTER button. 3 Select the [VI DEO/PICTURE] you wish to play back, then press the ENTER button. ≥ Press the MENU but ton. ≥ When a video item is sele cted, an icon will appear on th e thumbnail display .

B Operation icon ≥ Press the ENTER but ton to display/not -display the operat ion icon. ∫ Change the th umbnail disp lay While the thumbnai l is displ ayed, the t humbnail di splay changes in the follo wing order if the zoom lever is operat ed to s ide or side.
- 26 - Motion pi cture comp atibility ≥ The unit conforms to the MP4 format (MPEG-4 A V C file stan dard). ≥ Motion pic tures recorded on othe r MP4-compati ble equipment may not play bac k normall y or may not play back a t all on this unit.
- 27 - 1 Press the M ENU button. 2 Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select the top menu A , then press the ENTER button. 3 Select the s ubmenu B using 3 / 4 and press 1 or press the ENTER button. 4 Select the d esired item us ing 3 / 4 , and press the ENTER button to set.
- 28 - ≥ The items displayed differ depending on the position or settings of the mode switch. Select the menu. The screen display can be chan ged to [ON] (all informat ion displayed) or [OFF] (a portion of informati on displayed). Please ref er to page 59.
- 29 - 5 (Only when s etting the regio n of your travel dest ination) Select your travel destination using 2 / 1 and press the ENTER but ton. ≥ Press 3 to set daylight sa ving time. appears and the summ er time setting is turned on. The travel destinat ion tim e and time d ifference from the home region time are s et forward by one hour.
- 30 - When about 30 min utes have pas sed without any oper ation while connecti ng AC adaptor with this unit, this unit automatically turns off . ≥ This unit will not automatically tu rn off even if the [ECONOMY (AC)] is set to [ON] in following case s: j Using the USB cabl e for PC etc.
- 31 - S tarting and stopping of reco rding and unit on/of f can be confirmed with this sound. 2 Beep s for 4 times When an error oc curs. Check the se ntence display ed on the screen. ( l 78) This makes it easie r to view the LCD monitor in bright places including ou tdoors.
- 32 - Please be a ware that if a medium is formatted, then all t he data r ecorded on the mediu m will be erased an d cannot be restore d. Back up import ant data on a PC, di sc etc. ( l 63) ≥ When for matting is complet e, press MENU button t o exit the message scree n.
- 33 - ¬ Change the mode to . A Zoom bar ≥ The zoom spee d varies depending on t he range over which the zoom lev er is moved. ≥ Maximum zoom mag nification can be set wi th [D.ZOOM]. ( l 40) ∫ About Zoom ba r The zoom bar is disp layed during the zoom op eration.
- 34 - Optical image sta bilizer can stabilize the image without decrea sing the image quality as much. ¬ Change the mode to . ≥ S tabi lization may not be poss ible under s trong shak ing conditio ns.
- 35 - Select the operat ion icons to add dif ferent ef fects to the images to be recor ded. ¬ Change the mode to . 1 Press the ENTER bu tton to display the operation icons o n the s cree n. ≥ The indic ation changes eac h time you press 4 of t he curso r butto n.
- 36 - When you st art recordi ng, the image/aud io gradually appears . (Fade in) When you pause recording, the image /audio gradually disappear s. (Fade out) ≥ The Fade sett ing is cancelled when t he recording stop s. ∫ T o select the colour for Fade in/out ≥ The thumbnails of scenes recorded us ing fade in become black (or whit e).
- 37 - This allows recording of the pictures and sound to st art approximately 3 seconds before the r ecording st art/stop butt on is pressed. ≥ appea rs on the screen. ≥ Aim the unit at the subject beforeha nd. ≥ There is no beep s ound. ≥ PRE-REC is cancelled in the following cases.
- 38 - This brightens p a rt s that are in shadow and diffi cult to see a nd suppresses white saturation in bright part s at the same time. Both bright and dark p arts can be recorded clearl y . ≥ If ther e are extremely d ark or bright pa rts or th e brightness is insufficient , the ef fect may not be clea r .
- 39 - ≥ Change the mode to . When you r ecord images in dif ferent situations, this mode aut omatically set s optimum shutter speeds a nd apert ures. ≥ (Sun set/Lo w ligh t) j The shutt er speed is 1/25 or more. ≥ (Sunset/F ireworks/Scenery/ Night scener y) j Image may get blur ry when close object is re corded.
- 40 - Set the maxi mum zoom ratio. ≥ The larger t he digital zoom magnif ication, th e more the image quality is degraded. Switch th e picture quality and rec ording format of the motion pi ctures to be recorde d. *1 Recording will have higher quali ty in the order of [1280 k 720/50p] and [640 k 480/50 p].
- 41 - Detected faces ap pear with f rames. ≥ Up to 15 fra mes are indicate d. Larger faces and faces nearer t o the centr e of the screen tak e prefere nce over other s. ∫ Prioritised face framing Prioritis ed face framing is displa yed as orang e fr ames.
- 42 - This is for reduc ing the wind noise coming into the built-in microphone s. ≥ Switch to Manual Mode. ( l 44) ≥ This func tion’s def ault setting is [OFF] . ≥ When switching to Intellig ent Auto Mode, [WIND CUT] is set to [OFF], and the setting cannot be change d.
- 43 - Selecting t he picture quality . Y ou can add a shut ter sound when record ing still pictures. [QUALITY] : [PI CTU RE ] # [QUALITY] # desired setting : S till pictur es with a high picture qua lity are recorded. : Priority is given to the number of still pictures recorded.
- 44 - ¬ Change the mode to . Press the iA/MANUAL button to switch to Manual Mode. ≥ appea rs on the screen. ≥ Press the ENT ER button to disp lay/not-displ ay the manual icon.
- 45 - ≥ T o return to aut o setting, select o r press the iA/MANUAL but ton. ∫ T o set the Whi te Balance m anually 1P r e s s 2 / 1 to select , and fill the screen with a whi te subject. 2P r e s s 3 to set. ≥ When the display stop s flashing and then lights const antly , the setting is complete.
- 46 - Manual shutter spee d/iris adjustment Shutter Speed: Adjust it when recordin g fast-movin g subjects. Iris: Adjust it when the s creen is too bright or too dark. ≥ Press the iA/ MANUAL button to switch t o Manual Mode . ( l 44) 1 Select [SHT R] or [IRIS] using the cu rsor button.
- 47 - Recording with Manual Focus If auto foc using is diff icult due to the condit ions, then use Manual Fo cus. ≥ Press the iA/ MANUAL button to switch t o Manual Mode . ( l 44) 1 Press 4 to switch the manual icon. 2 Select [MF] using the cursor butt on to change to M anual Focus.

- 49 - Creating still picture from motion picture A single fra me from the recorde d motion picture c an be saved as a still pic ture. Picture size of the still pict ure to be created wil l differ dep ending on the record ing mode of the recorded motion pictu re.
- 50 - Resuming the previous pla yback If playbac k of a scene was stoppe d halfway , the play back can be resumed fr om where it was stoppe d. If playba ck of a motio n picture is s topped, appears on the thumbnail vi ew of the stop ped scene. ≥ The memorised re sume position is clea red if you turn of f the unit or chan ge the mode.
- 51 - Playing bac k motion pictures/ still pictures by date The scene s or the still pictures record ed on the same day can be pla yed back in succession . 1 Select the d ate select icon using the cursor butto n, then press th e ENTER button. 2 Select the p layback dat e, then press the E NTER button.

- 53 - ¬ Change the mode to . ∫ T o delete sc enes or still p ictures from the thumbna il display 1 Press the button while the thumbnail vie w screen is dis played. 2 Select [ALL SCENES] o r [SELECT] using the c ursor button, then press th e ENTER button.
- 54 - T o complete edit ing Press the MENU but ton. ≥ Y ou can also delete sc enes by pressing the MENU but ton, selecting [ EDIT SCENE] # [DEL ETE] # [ALL S CENES] or [SELECT ]. ≥ Y ou can also delete still pictures by pressing the MENU button, s electing [PHOT O SETUP] # [DELE TE] # [ALL SCEN ES] or [S ELEC T].
- 55 - Dividing a sce ne to p artially delete This divide s the recorded scene s in two and deletes the fron t half or back hal f. The scene s that were deleted af ter divi sion cannot be recover ed. ≥ Change the mode to . 1 Select the m enu. 2 Select the s cene you wish to divide using th e cursor button and press th e ENTER button.
- 56 - Protecting scenes/s till pictures Scenes/still picture s can be protected so that th ey are not deleted by mist ake. (Even if you p rotect some scenes /still pictur es, formatting th e media will delete th em.) ≥ Change the mode to . 1 Select the m enu.
- 57 - ≥ HDMI is the int erface for digit al devices. If yo u connect this unit to an HDMI comp atible high definit ion TV and then play back th e recorded high definit ion images, you can enjoy them in high resolu tion with high qua lity sound. 1 Connect t his unit to a TV .
- 58 - 2 Select the v ideo input on the TV . ≥ Example: Select the [ HDMI] channel with a HDMI mini cab le. Select the [ Video 2] cha nnel with an A V cable. (The name of the channel may differ dep ending on the connec ted TV .) ≥ Check the inpu t setting (inpu t switch) and the aud io input setting on t he TV .
- 59 - ∫ T o watch image s on a regular TV (4:3) or when both sides of the images do not appear on the s cree n Change the menu setting to displa y the images cor rectly . (C heck the TV setting. ) ≥ When this setting is se t to [4:3] and t he unit is connec ted to a televi sion using the A V cable, the image may appea r in a shrunken fo rm.

- 63 - HD Wr iter HE 1.0 Y ou can copy the motion/st ill picture data to the HDD of PCs or write to media like Blu-ray discs, DVD discs or S D cards using HD Wr iter HE 1.0, the software instal led in the supplied CD-ROM. Refer to th e operati ng instructions of HD Writ er HE 1.
- 64 - ≥ It is pos sible to play back still pictu re on a PC using an image viewer st andard to Windows or commerci ally available image browsi ng software, and copy s till pictures to a PC using Windows Ex plorer . ≥ Please refer to p age 75 for details about using a Mac.

- 83 - Keep this unit as far away as possible fro m electromagnetic equipment (such as microwave ovens, TVs, video g ames etc.). ≥ If you use t his unit on top of or near a T V , the pictures and/or sound on th is unit may be disrupt ed by electromagnet ic wave radi ati on.
- 84 - Do not use the unit for surveillance purposes or othe r business uses. ≥ This unit was des igned for consumer intermitt ent use. It was not int ended for continu ous use, o r for any in dustrial or commercial appli cation resulting in prolong ed use.
