8 RT-N14U Chapter 1: Getting to know your router Hardware features USB LED O : Indicates no power or no USB device connected. On: Indicates a connected USB devices. LAN LED O : No power or no connection detected. On: Indicates a connection to a local area network (LAN).
9 RT-N14U Chapter 1: Getting to know your router USB 2.0 port Inser t USB 2.0 devices such as USB hard drives and desktop print ers into this port. WPS button Press this butt on to launch the WPS Wizar d to set up wireless security . LAN 1~4 ports Connect ethernet cables into these ports to establish a LAN connection.

11 Chapter 2: Setting up your wireless network RT-N14U Positioning your router T o get the best wireless network per formance fr om your ASUS router , follow the r ecommendations below: • Place the wireless r outer at the cent er of your network f or maximum wireless co verage .
12 Chapter 2: Setting up your wireless network RT-N14U What you need T o set up your network, you need one or two c omputers that meet the following sy stem requir ements: • Ethernet RJ-45 (LAN) por t (10Base-T/100Base-T X) • IEEE 802.
13 Chapter 2: Setting up your wireless network RT-N14U Setting up your wireless router Wired connection Use a wired connection in setting up your wireless r outer to av oid possible wireless setup issues. Before setting up y our ASUS wireless r outer , do the following: • If you are replacing an e xisting router , disconnect it from your network.

Once the ethernet cable is connected , check that the LAN LED is blinking. 3 Using another network cable, connect your modem to your wireless router’ s W AN por t.

20 Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI RT-N14U Logging into the web GUI Y our ASUS Wireless Router uses a web-based user interface that allows you t o configure the rout er using any w eb browser such as Internet Explorer , Fir efo x, Safari, or G oogle Chrome.

Setting up the Internet connection When setting the Internet connection for the first time , press the Reset button on your wireless r outer to reset it t o its factor y default settings.
22 Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI RT-N14U 2. Quick Internet Setup will launch automatically . Click Next . 3. Key in a new administrator passw ord . Click Ne xt. 4. Select Wir eless router mode or Acc ess P oint (AP) mode. Click Next.
23 RT-N14U Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI 5. The wireless rout er will attempt to iden tify your connection type. Obtain the necessary information about your Internet connection type and additional login information from your Internet Ser vice P rovider .
24 Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI RT-N14U • Auto-det ection of your ISP connection type tak es place when you configure the wir eless router f or the first time or when your wireless rout er is reset to its default settings. • If QIS fails, you can select the connection t ype manually .

On the Network Map screen, click the Client Status icon to list currently connected network clients. T o use this feature , connect a USB storage device, such as a USB hard disk or USB flash drive , to the USB 2.

29 RT-N14U Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI Creating your Guest Network Setting up a Guest Network provides wireless Int ernet connectivity for temporary visitors while restric ting access to y our private netw ork. T o creat e your guest netw ork: 1.

Monitoring T raffic Click the T raffic Monitor tab to view real-time or historical bandwidth information of y our Internet, Wired , and Wireless connections.
33 RT-N14U Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI Using the USB application The USB application menu displa ys several options including AiDisk , Ser vers C enter , and Network Print er Ser ver . Using AiDisk for File Sharing AiDisk allows you t o share files stored in a c onnected USB storage device through the network.
34 Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI RT-N14U T o use AiDisk: 1. Click USB application on the left navigation panel and click the AiDisk icon. 2. F rom the W elcome to AiDisk wizard screen, click G o . 3. Assign access rights to the USB st orage device .
35 RT-N14U Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI 6. Click F inish . 7. T o access the USB storage device via FTP fr om a client on the network, launch a web browser or a thir d-par ty FTP client utility and key in the ftp link ( f tp://<domain name> ) you previously created .

T o access the FTP ser ver from a client on the network, k ey in ftp://<hostname>.asuscomm.com on a web br owser or a third-part y FTP utility . Once prompted , key in the account username and password y ou set up in Step 6.
42 Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI RT-N14U Using the Miscellaneous setting The Miscellaneous settings page allows you t o configure additional properties for the USB disk.
43 RT-N14U Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI Conguring Advanced settings Setting up the DHCP Ser ver Y ou wireless router uses DHCP t o assign IP addresses automatically on your netw ork. Y ou can specify the IP address range and lease time for the clien ts on your network.
44 Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI RT-N14U • ASUS recommeds that y ou use an IP address format of 192.168.1.xxx (where xxx can be any number between 2 and 254) when specifying an IP address range . • An IP P ool Starting Address should not be greater than the IP P ool Ending Address .

46 Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI RT-N14U Setting up your network printer Use the Network P rinter Setup utility to set up a USB printer on your wireless r outer and share the printer with other devic es on the network.
47 RT-N14U Chapter 3: Network Configuration using the web GUI 4. F ollow the onscreen instructions to set up your hardware , then click Next . 5. W ait for a few minutes f or the initial setup to finish. Click Next . 6. Click F inish to complete the installa tion.

49 RT-N14U Chapter 4: Using the Utilities Device Discovery Device Discov er y is an ASUS WLAN utilit y that detects an ASUS wireless router devic e , and enables you to configure the de vice.
50 RT-N14U Chapter 4: Using the Utilities Firmware Restoration F irmware Restora tion is used on an ASUS Wireless Router af ter a failed firmware upgrade . This utility uploads a firmware file to the wireless router . The process takes about three to f our minutes.
51 RT-N14U Chapter 4: Using the Utilities The F ir mware Restora tion utility is not used to upgrade the firmware of a working ASUS Wireless Router . Normal firmware upgrades must be done through the web GUI. Refer to Upgrading the firmwar e for more details .

53 Chapter 5: T roubleshooting RT-N14U T roubleshooting I cannot access the router GUI for conguring the router . • Delete the cookies and temporar y files in your web br owser . T o do this in Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps: 1. Launch your web br owser , then click T ools > Internet Options.
54 Chapter 5: T roubleshooting RT-N14U Cannot find the rout er: • P ress the Reset button at the rear panel f or more than five seconds. • Check the setting in the wireless adapt er such as SSID and encr yption settings. Cannot access the Internet via wireless LAN adapter .
55 Chapter 5: T roubleshooting RT-N14U If the ADSL “LINK” light blinks continuously or stays off, Internet access is not possible - the Router is unable to establish a connection with the ADSL network. • Ensure that all your cables ar e all properly connected .
56 ASUS DDNS Service RT-N14U suppor ts the ASUS DDNS ser vice. W hen exchanging devices at the service center , if you hav e registered the ASUS DDNS ser vice and want to keep the original domain name , you must transfer y our data in order to r etain the DDNS ser vice.
