2 XA30.5 Owner’ s Manual Nelson P ass has been designing audio electronics since about 1971, first with ESS (remember Heil transfor mers?), and then for ming a new company , Threshold in 1975. Threshold pioneered the design of high pow er Class A power amplifiers and later , high pow er amplifiers using only local feedback (the Stasis series).
3 XA30.5 Owner’ s Manual W e star t with simple FET circuits already ha ving low distortion and noise, and arrang e them in tw o symmetrical halves . T he tw o halves of the amplifier channel are closely matc hed, eliminating a larg e por tion of distortion and noise without feedback.
4 XA30.5 Owner’ s Manual All the usual perfor mance metrics - pow er, distortion, noise, input impedance, damping factor and bandwidth ha ve all been impro ved in this latest generation. T he po wer supplies are larger, with fast rectifiers gating to larg er capacitor banks .
5 XA30.5 Owner’ s Manual SET UP X amplifiers r un at about the same pow er as their output rating, and XA amplifier r un more than twice that. The heat sinks on the side of the amplifier r un hot to the touch – about 25 to 30 degrees C. abov e ambient, so you can expect 50 to 55 degrees C.
6 XA30.5 Owner’ s Manual The amplifier’ s voltage and cur rent rating are indicated on the rear panel. It will be either 230 v olts, 115 v olts or 100 volts . T he larger amplifiers have a circuit break er of the appropriate capacity . The smaller power amplifiers use a slo w-blow 3A G type fuse .
7 XA30.5 Owner’ s Manual So the amplifier is sitting there unconnected. Make sure that the rear panel po wer switch/break er is off (down). Plug the A C cord into the back of the amplifier , and then into the wall. Then tur n the po wer switc h/breaker on (up).
8 XA30.5 Owner’ s Manual XLR. If you re-install the jumper incorrectly or leav e it lying about, the amplifier will not w ork properly , and you will be able to tell. Choose either XLR or RCA inputs . If you r un both at once from different components , the sound is not likely to be optimal, but it shouldn ’ t cause damag e anywhere .
9 XA30.5 Owner’ s Manual should never occur in real life . This is a ver y rare occurrence, and w ould indicate a serious problem. Interconnects and Speaker Ca bles W e hav e a g eneral recommendation about interconnects , and speaker cables: They should cost less than the amplifier , and contain at least some conductiv e material.
10 XA30.5 Owner’ s Manual ther mal cycles , but we can sa y that we hav e had amplifiers operating in the field in ex cess of 20 years with no par ticular mortality , and we don ’ t hav e g ood infor mation beyond that. More to the point, you should not w or ry about it.
