1.0 W ARRANTY INFORMATION P atton Electronics warr ants all Model 1088 components to be free from def ects, and will—at our option—repair or replace the product should it f ail within one year from the first date of shipment.
1.3 SERVICE All warranty and non-w arranty repairs must be returned freight prepaid and insured to P atton Electronics. All retur ns must ha ve a Return Materi- als A uthorization number on the outside of the shipping container .
2.0 GENERAL INFORMATION Thank you f or your purchase of this P atton Electronics product. This product has been thoroughly inspected and tested and is warranted f or One Y ear par ts and labor .
3.0 CONFIGURATION The Model 1088 is equipped with two sets of eight DIP s witches, which allow configuration of the unit f or a wide v ariety of applications. This section describes switch locations and e xplains all possib le configur ations . 3.
Configuration DIP Switch Set “S2” Switches S1-1 through S1-8 ma y be used to configure CO/CP operation, line framing and coding, CRC-4 operation, and DTE initiated loop diag- nostics. Default settings of S1 s witches are shown in T able 1. T able 1: S2 Summary T able Switch S2-1, S2-2, S2-3, S2-4, and S-5.
1088/C ignores DTE loop requests. In the Off position, loop requests ma y still be initiated by the front panel s witch. Configuration Switch Set “S3” Use the six DIP Switches in Switch S3 to enable the DTE bit r ate. The f ollowing tab le summar izes def ault positions of DIP Switch S3.
Note Based on the DTE rate chosen, the Model 1088 will automati- cally select the optimum line rate depending on distance and line conditionsfor the distance . The line selection will be based on the lowest line r ate that will suppor t the DTE rate.
Switch S3-8: T ransmit Data (TD) Sampling Point. Switch 3-8 controls the T ransmit Data (TD) sampling point. 3.2 NETLINK PLUG-AND-PLAY The NetLink Plug-and-Pla y f eature allows ISPs , carriers and PTTs to quickly upg rade the link speed f or a customer without requir ing the cus- tomer to re-configure the Customer Premise (CP) Model 1088.
When the CO and CP units connect ov er DSL, the CP will enter a pre- defined def ault configuration (Receiv e Recovered Cloc king). Dur ing the negotiation process between the units, the CO unit will configure the DTE rate/line rate on the CP unit as defined b y the settings of the CO unit.
4.0 INSTALLATION Once the Model 1088 is properly configured, it is ready to connect to the twisted pair interf ace, to the serial por t, and to the power source .
V .35 straight through cab le (See Figure 5). Appendix C describes pin assignments and signal sources f or the Model 1088/C V .35 interface . When purchasing or constructing an interface cab le, please refer to the pin diagrams in Appendix C as a guide .
such as a router . Howe ver , the X.21 interf ace on the Model 1088/D ma y be configured as DTE (Data T er minal Equipment) for connection to DCE such as a modem or multiple xer . When connecting the X.21 interface of the Model 1088/C to your DTE de vice, use a X.
The DCE/DTE strap is located on the top side of the 1088/D pc board (See Figure 9, below). The arrows on the top of the strap indicate the configuration of the X.21 por t (f or e xample, if the DCE arro ws are point- ing tow ard the DB-15 connector , the X.
120 V A C Po wer (US) The 100–132 V AC adapter supplied with the U .S. v ersion of the Model 1088 is a wall mount type and ma y be plugged into any approv ed 120 V AC w all jack.
5.0 OPERATION Once the Model 1088 is properly configured and installed, it should oper- ate transparently . This sections descr ibes power-up , reading the LED status monitors, and using the b uilt-in loopback test modes. 5.1 POWER-UP T o apply power to the Model 1088, first be sure that y ou have read sec- tion 4.
• Only at power up , blinks once e very 200 ms if the DTE Rate is set to an unsuppor ted settings TM Glows y ellow to indicate that the Model 1095 has been placed in T est Mode. The unit can be placed in test mode by the local user or by the remote user .
Overview Figure 13 shows the major elements used in the loop-bac k and patter n tests av ailable in the Model 1088. Each bloc k has sev eral functions. F ol- lowing Figure 13 are descriptions that show ho w the elements are used during T est Modes.
lish a connection after the framer begins seeing unframed pac k- ets. The T est Model Timing Char t below shows the amount of time the framer must see consecutiv e unframed pack ets before the unit will restar t and tr y to establish a ne w line connection.
5.4 LOOPS AND PATTERNS The f ollowing section describes the T est Modes used in the Model 1088. At the bottom of each T est Mode, a figure is included to show the data path.
data presented at the f ar end DTE will be transmitted to the local DTE and then looped back within the local DTE Loop Con- trol bloc k with the Processor . After the Local Loop is deselected, the units will be placed back into DataMode and the normal data paths will be re-established.
DTE are not valid. Because the data is unframed there is no wa y for the framer to send this data out to the DTE. This is an impor tant distinction because other P atton units will send out the 511 pattern. When the unit is placed into a Mode 2 Local Loop , the 511/511E pattern generator on the local unit is unav ailable f or transmis- sion.
Figure 19. Block Remote Loop with 511/511E Remote Digital Loop with 511/511E The Remote Digital Loop with 511/511E is shown abo ve . After RDL is established the Remote units' Restart Timer is set to one minute.
units enable the 511/511E pattern within 4 seconds of each other , both units will be tr ansmitting and receiving the 511/511E pattern. Both framers are now receiving unframed data and will restar t after one minute. The 511/511E pattern generators will TimeOut after 45 seconds re-enabling the normal data path.
