2 SOME DUST CREA TED BY POWER SANDING, SAWING, GRINDING, DRILLING, AND OTHER CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES contains chemicals known to cause cancer , birth defects or other repr oductive harm.
3 ELECTRICAL SAFETY 1. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cor d to carry the tool. Keep cord away fr om heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately .
4 7. Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Pr operly maintained tools with sharp cutting edge are less likely to bind and ar e easier to control. 8. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool’ s operation.
5 ADDITIONAL SAFETY RULES FOR HAMMER DRILL/DRIVERS 1. Apply forward for ce only on pistol grip handle and ONL Y with your hands when drilling. 2. Do not use bits lar ger than those recommended. They may cause personal injury due to jamming and loss of control.
3. Do not expose charger to rain, snow or frost. 4. Do not abuse cord. Never carry char ger by cor d or yank it to disconnect from r eceptacle. Pull by plug rather than cord when disconnecting char ger . Have damaged or worn power cord and strain reliever r eplaced immediately .
7 19. Dispose of expended batteries properly . The Porter -Cable Model 8823 Battery Pack contains rechar geable, nickel-cadmium batteries. These batteries must be recycled or disposed of pr operly .
8 INST ALLING AND REMOVING DRILL AND SCREWDRIVER BITS Always set the reversing button to the center (locked "OFF") position when installing and removing bits. 1. The three-jaw chuck is designed for self-centering of the bit. Open jaws lar ge enough by turning the sleeve (A) Fig.
9 The low speed position is normally used when drilling lar ger holes and when driving or removing scr ews. The high speed position is normally used for drilling small holes. DRIVER BIT STORAGE Convenient storage areas with retaining clip (B) Fig. 4 for screwdriver bits ar e provided on each side of the tool.
10 OPERA TION CHARGING THE BA TTERY P ACK GENERAL Before using your cor dless tool for the first time, the battery pack should be fully char ged. If the battery pack is installed in the tool, remove it by following instructions under INST ALLING OR REMOVING BA TTER Y P ACK.
11 Problems will be indicated by char ger indicator lights (see Fig. 8): • If the green light (A) continues to flash after battery pack is inserted in char ger , the battery pack temperature is either too high or too low for char ging.
12 HOW TO HOLD THE HAMMER DRILL/DRIVER The front end of the Hammer Drill/Driver may be made live if the tool drills into live wiring in the wall. TO PREVENT ELECTRICAL SHOCK, THE HAMMER DRILL/DRIVER MUST BE HELD AS SHOWN IN FIG. 10B. GENERAL DRILLING 1.
13 DRILLING WOOD In addition to the instructions listed under "GENERAL DRlLLlNG", the following also apply: 1. When using twist drills in wood, withdraw them from the hole frequently to clear chips built up in flutes to avoid overheating and burning work.
14 2. Install proper bit that fits scr ew to screwdriver . 3. Set tor que adjusting collar for desired tor que and set speed selector to LOW . 4. Set screwdriver for corr ect rotation. 5. Start screw straight in hole with fingers. 6. Place bit on screw , remove fingers, start scr ewdriver , and exert pressure to drive screw .
MAINTENANCE KEEP TOOL CLEAN All plastic parts should be cleaned with a soft damp cloth. NEVER use solvents to clean plastic parts. They could very possibly dissolve or otherwise damage the material. F AILURE TO ST ART Should your tool fail to start, make sure battery pack is char ged and pr operly installed in drill.
16 AL TERNA TE CHUCK REPLACEMENT Remove battery pack to prevent accidental start-up. 1. Open chuck jaws as wide as possible to gain access to the chuck retaining scr ew . 2. Remove chuck retaining scr ew by turning it clockwise (left-hand thread) with an hex wrench.
