2 DO NO T : • Do not turn on slopes unless necessar y , and then, turn slowly and gradually do wnhill, if possible . • Do not mow near drop-offs , ditches, or embankments . The mower could suddenly turn ov er if a wheel is o ver the edge of a cliff or ditch, or if an edge cav es in.
3 W ARNING: In order to pre vent ac- ci den tal starting when setting up, trans por t ing, ad just ing or making re- pairs, al ways dis con nect spark plug wire and place wire where it can not contact spark plug. W ARNING: Do not coast down a hill in neutral, y ou may lose contr ol of the tractor .

6 HO W T O SET UP Y OUR TRA CT OR INST ALL SEA T (See Fig. 2) Adjust seat bef ore tightening adjustment knob . • Remov e adjustment knob and fl at washer securing seat to cardboard packing and set aside f or assembly of seat to tractor . • Pivot seat upward and remov e from the cardboard pack- ing.

11 OPERA TION The operation of any tractor can result in f oreign objects thro wn into the ey es, which can result in severe e ye dam age. Al wa ys wear safety glass es or eye shields while operating your tractor or per for m ing any adjustments or repairs.
12 OPERA TION T O OPERA TE ON HILLS W ARNING: Do not drive up or down hills with slopes greater than 15° and do not drive across an y slope. • Choose the slowest speed bef ore star ting up or down hills. • A v oid stopping or changing speed on hills.
13 OPERA TION T O ST ART ENGINE (See Fig. 5) When star ting the engine for the fi rst time or if the engine has run out of fuel, it will take e xtra cranking time to mo v e fuel from the tank to the engine. • Be sure freewheel control is in the transmission en gaged position.
14 FIG. 10 MO WING TIPS • Mower should be properly lev eled for best mowing per- f ormance. See “T O LEVEL MOWER HOUSING” in the Ser vice and Adjustments section of this manual. • The left hand side of mow er should be used f or trim- ming. • Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the area that has been cut.
15 MULCHING MO WING TIPS IMPORT ANT : FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEP MOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUIL T -UP GRASS AND TRASH. CLEAN AFTER EA CH USE. • The spe cial mulch ing blade will recut the g rass clip- pings many times and reduce them in size so that as they f all onto the lawn they will disperse into the g rass and not be noticed.

17 MAINTENANCE BLADE REMO V AL (See Fig. 12) • Raise mower to highest position to allow access to bla d e s. • Remov e blade bolt, lock washer and fl at was he r se cur ing bla d e. • Install new or reshar pened blade with tr ailing edge up tow ards deck as sho wn.
18 CLEAN AIR INT AKE/COOLING AREAS T o insure proper cooling, make sure the gr ass screen, cooling fi ns, and other external surf aces of the engine are kept clean at all times . Ev er y 100 hours of operation (more often under e xtremely dusty , dir ty conditions), remov e the blo wer housing and other cooling shrouds.
19 MAINTENANCE MUFFLER Inspect and replace corroded muffl er and spar k arrester (if equipped) as it could create a fi re hazard and/or dam- age. SP ARK PLUGS Replace spark plugs at the beginning of each mowing season or after e very 100 hours of operation, whiche v er occurs fi rst.
20 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS W ARNING: T O A V OID SERIOUS INJUR Y , BEFORE PERFORMING ANY SER VICE OR AD JUST - MENTS • Depress clutc h/brake pedal fully and set parking brake. • Place motion control le ver in neutral (N) position. • Place attachment c lutch in “DISENGA GED” position.

23 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS T O REMO VE WHEEL FOR REP AIRS (See Fig. 27) • Block up axle securely . • Remov e axle co ver , retaining ring and washers to allow wheel remov al (rear wheel contains a square k ey - Do not lose). • Repair tire and reassemble .
24 T O REMO VE HOOD AND GRILL ASSEMBL Y (See Fig. 31) • Raise hood. • Unsnap headlight wire connector . • Stand in front of tractor . Grasp hood at sides , tilt tow ard engine and lift off of tractor . • T o replace, re v erse abov e procedure.

26 ST ORA GE Immediately prepare your tr actor f or storage at the end of the season or if the tractor will not be used f or 30 da ys or more. W ARNING: Never store the trac tor with gas o line in the tank inside a building where fumes may reac h an open fl ame or spark.
27 PROBLEM CA USE CORRECTION TR OUBLESHOO TING POINTS Will not start 1. Out of fuel. 1. Fill fuel tank. 2. Engine not “CHOKED” properly . 2. See “T O ST ART ENGINE” in Operation section. 3. Engine fl ooded. 3. Wait se veral minutes bef ore attempting to start.
28 PROBLEM CA USE CORRECTION TR OUBLESHOO TING POINTS Engine continues to run 1. F aulty operator-saf ety presence control system. 1. Check wiring, switches and connections. If not when operator leaves seat corrected, contact an authorized ser vice center/ with attachment clutc h depar tment.
