OVERVIEW 4 1.1 INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing the PreSonus INSPIRE 1394. PreSonus Audio Electronics has designed the INSPIRE 1394 utilizing high-grade com ponents to insure optimum perform ance that will last a lifetime.
OVERVIEW 5 Your INSPIRE 1394 pac 1.2 WHAT IS IN THE BOX kage contains the following: • INSPIRE 1394 Interface • CD-ROM containing driver softwar e and user manual in PDF form.
OVERVIEW 6 .3 FRONT AND BACK PA NEL LAYOUT 1 Front Panel Your INSPIRE 1394 is equipped with two custom designed, digitally controlled, solid state preamplifiers that can accept XLR microphone or 1/ 4" instrument inputs. For each preamplifier, ither the XLR or 1/4" input m ay be used at a given time.
OVERVIEW 7 c. Red-Blue Power/Sync Light. This light is a driver sync indicator, and lets y ou know if your unit is receiving driver sync co rrectly. Proper driver sync preven ts digital interfaces from having pops, clicks, or distortion in the audio signal.
OVERVIEW 8 will need to get a single 4 to 6 pin 1394 cable to connect your INSPIRE 1394 to your computer, and use the external power supply. (Refer to section 4.2 for Multiple Unit Support) c. Headphone Symbol and 1/8” / 3.5mm Jack. Headphone o utput.
OVERVIEW 9 1.4 QUICK START UP GUIDE We recommend you familiarize yourself with the entire INSPIRE 1394 user manual, however, follow these instructions if you want to just dive in: PC: 1.) Insert the I NSPIRE 1394 Driver/Software CD in the CD drive of t he computer .
OVERVIEW 10 5.) Click on the Start Menu to naviga te to A ll Programs / Pr eSonus INSPIRE 1394, and click on Control Panel. This will open the INSPIRE 1394 Co ntrol Panel, from which you can digitally control your I NSPIRE 1394. 6.) If you intend to use Cubase L E , re fer to the Cubase LE section below.
OVERVIEW 11 CUBASE LE : Once you have installed the INSPIRE 1394 drivers, if you plan on using the CUBASE L E software included with your INSPI RE 1394, insert the INSPIRE 1394 Dr iver/Software CD and run the Cubase LE I nstaller. Make sure to keep your CD sleeve handy to reference the serial number during installation.

INSTALLATION 14 2.1 COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS The INSPIRE 1394 is a self contained 1394 audio in terface- just add a computer with a 1394 port, and your recording setup is com ple te (no other device, such as an internal sound card, is needed).
INSTALLATION 15 2.2 INSTALLATION OF INSPIRE 1394 DRIVERS AND S OFTWARE Windows XP: 1.) Insert the I NSPIRE 1394 Driver/Software CD in the CD drive of t he computer . The installer should auto-run. (If installation does not begin, point the computer to your CD drive and run setup.
INSTALLATION 16 Macintosh OSX (10.3.7 or later) : The audio drivers for the INSPIRE 1394 are included in CORE AUDIO for Macintosh OSX 10.3.7 and later. Once you have verified that you are runnin g OSX 10.3.7 or later, connect your INSPI RE 1394 to a 1394 port on y our com puter (power for the u nit will be supplied via the 1394 cable).
APPLICATIONS 17 3.1 CONTROL PANEL OPERATI ON Once you have successfully installed your audio driver s, launch the INSPIRE 1394 Control Panel. PC: The INSPIRE 1394 Control pa nel ICON will be in the quicklaunch area of the taskbar, and your program s list.
APPLICATIONS General Controls: Knobs: To control any knob, click and dr ag your m ouse in a circular m otion around the knob. The furt her out you dr ag the m ouse from the knob, the fi ner the control over the knob will be.
APPLICATIONS 19 Control Panel Window Controls: In the upper right corner of the Control Panel Window, you will notice several controls: Always on Top: This engages a mode in which the Control Panel window will no longer get pushed behind a nother applicati on’s windo w when you click outside o f the Control Panel window.
APPLICATIONS 20 Inputs 1 and 2: These inputs are on the front of your I NSPIRE 1394. Gain: This knob will control the gai n of your preamplifier. 48V: This button will turn 48 Volt Phantom Power on/off. Limit: This button will turn the pr eamplifier’s limiter on /off.
APPLICATIONS 21 Level Control: This is a dual concentric knob (two knobs stacked one on top of t he other). The inside (with white indicator) knob co ntrols the level of the left channel, and the outside (w ith red indicator) knob contr ols the level of the right cha nnel.
APPLICATIONS 22 Control Panel (PC only ): Sample Rate: This refers to the number of samples per second you are recording of the w aveform (eg; 44,100 sam ples per second). Drop down the menu in the Control Panel to sel ect the sample rate of the INSPIRE 1394 – 44.
APPLICATIONS 23 3.2 WIN SHADE VIEW Win Shade View : Pictured above is a smaller version of the I NSPIRE 1394 Control Panel called the Win Shade Mode. All of the c ont rols in this m ode function in th e same way as the controls in the regular Contro l Panel view.
APPLICATIONS 24 3.3 MONITOR MIXER Pictured above is the INSPIRE 1394 Monitor M ixer, which is located within the Control Panel. This Monitor Mixer allows for flexible routing of your audi o inputs before it reaches your software program .
APPLICATIONS 25 Inputs 1-4: Each input channel on t his Monitor Mixer includes controls for Level (fader), Pan (panner), and Mute (button), and a high resolution meter. Any input into the INSPIRE 1394 will correspond to the sam e number channel in the Monitor Mixer.
APPLICATIONS 26 Mixer Bypass : When the Mixer Bypass is engaged, all of its controls are bypassed, input ch annels 1-4 are bypassed, and the software playback channel will be rout ed straight to the outputs of the INSPIRE 1394. Only the software playback cha nnel will be heard.
APPLICATIONS 27 4.1 SAMP LE HOOK UP DI AGRAM.
APPLICATIONS 28 4.2 MULTIPLE UNIT SUPPORT It is possible to chain up to four INSPIRE 1394’s to allow for more input/output capability in your DAW software.
APPLICATIONS 29 Mac: 1.) Chain another I NSPIRE 1394 via a 1394 cable to the available 1394 port on the existing IN SPI RE 1394. 2.) You should ha ve a blue sync light on both of the IN SPIRE 1394’s connected. 3.) Open the INSPI RE 1394 Control Panel and look at th e Unit Selector.
TESTING 30 6.) Click the monitor button in Cubase LE for Audio 01 to arm the track’s monitoring. Then, connect a set of headphones or speakers to the INSPIRE 1394 headphone outp ut or speaker output. Make sure the level in the Control Pane l for your headphones or speaker output is high enough for you to hear the output.
TECHNICAL INFOR MATION 31 6.1 GLOSSARY 1/4” - This is the t ype of connector comm only used for instrument cables. The jack itself has a ¼” diameter. There are two types of these connectors: TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve) Balanced and TS (Tip Sleeve) unbalanced.

TECHNICAL INFOR MATION 33 Latency- This is the tim e it takes to process your i nput into or back from the co m puter, m easured in milliseconds. The lower the latenc y, the lower the processing time and the harder the com puter must work.
TECHNICAL INFOR MATION 34 RCA- This type of connector usually comes in colo red stereo pairs, where the white connector is the left side and the red connector is th e right side. These are commonly used for connecting to spe akers or unbalanc ed devices.
TECHNICAL INFOR MATION 35 6.2 TROUBLESHOOTING Please note that many technical issue s can arise when converting a standard com puter into a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). PreSonus will only provide supp ort for issues that directly relate to the INSPIRE 1394 interface.
TECHNICAL INFOR MATION 36 No Sync (Red) – Macintosh Users –Open Audio MIDI Set up and change the Form at sample rate speed to anything different. This will re-establish sy nchronization and the Blue sy nc light will turn on. Once you have the blue sy nc light you can then reset the Format sam ple rate to your desired setting.
