5 PREPARATION POWERING THE CTR-1 16 You can operate y our CTR-116 from any of these power sour c- es: • four AA bat teries (not suppl ied) • standard AC power (u sing an o ptional AC adapter ) • vehicl e battery power (us ing an op tional D C adapte r) Note: Using an ad apter auto maticall y disc onnects the int ernal batteries .
6 1. Press do wn on the batt ery co m- part ment co ver and sli de i t off in the direc tion of th e arrow . 2. Put the batterie s into the co m- partmen t as indic ated by th e polarity symbols (+ and –) marke d insi de. 3. R epl ace t h e cov er .

8 Follow these s teps to po wer the CTR- 116 with an AC ada pter. 1. Insert th e ada pter ’s 5 .5 mm o uter diam eter/2.1 mm inner diamete r barrel pl ug into the a dapter ’s cord, w ith the tip s et to negat ive. 2. Insert th e barrel pl ug into the CTR-1 16’ s DC 6V jack.

10 CONNECTING THE EARPH ONE You can use the supplie d earp hone to l isten pri vately t o the CTR-1 16. You can als o connect an externa l or pillow- type speake r (not supp lied) t o this ja ck. Note: Your local R adioS hack st ore sells a wi de variet y of speak ers .
11 • Set the vo lume to its lowes t level before you begin liste n- ing. A fter you put o n the earpho ne, adjus t the volum e to a comfort abl e listeni ng lev el . • Do not increas e the vol ume on ce you have esta blished a comfort able list ening level.
12 PLAYING A CASSE TTE T APE 1. Press STOP /E JECT to open the cassett e comp art- ment do or . 2. Use you r finger or a penci l to turn th e casse tte’s hub and take up any slac k in the tape.
13 4. Rotate VOL UME to its lowest settin g ( MIN ). 5. Press PLA Y . The tape begi ns to p lay . 6. Adjust VOLUME to the de sir ed l ist eni ng lev el. 7. The CT R-1 16 automatic ally st ops at th e end of the tap e. Or , press STOP/ EJECT to stop p lay sooner .
14 howev er , we reco mmend th at you do not pa use th e tape for longer th an abo ut 5 minutes at a ti me. • T o rapidly adva nce or rewi nd the tape, p ress FA S T - F / CUE or REWIND/REVIEW . The b utto n lock s down and the ta pe con tinues mo ving u ntil you pr ess ST OP/ EJECT .
15 • If you press FAS T - F / C U E or REWIND/REVIEW while the tape plays, you hear the s ound at high s peed. Th is can help yo u locate a specif ic port ion of the tape. USING THE T APE COUNTE R You can use th e tape counter to give you an indi cation o f the tape’s posit ion.
16 RECORDING Note: For th e best pe rformance, use only regular l ength (60- or 90-minu te) casset te tapes. We do no t recomme nd long-pla ying casse tte tapes, such as C- 120s, b ecause t hey are extrem ely thin and can t angle eas ily.
17 At HIGH , a soft sound turns on the record er . At LOW , it takes a l ouder soun d to start recording. Experiment to find the bes t setting f or VOX in your rec ording en vironmen t.
18 4. T o momentar ily s top reco rding, press PA U S E . Releas e P AUSE to resume reco rding. 5. T o stop recording press STOP/EJECT . Notes: • If yo u hold down REWIND/REVIEW or F AS T-F/CUE while recording , the RECORD button rel eases and the tape rew inds or adva nces.
19 MANUAL RECORDING Manual recordi ng is like VOX rec ording, ex cept you co ntrol when rec ording begi ns and ends. Set VOX to OFF , then press RECORD to be gin recordi ng. Press STOP /EJECT to stop recordin g, or press PA U S E in to temporaril y stop rec ording.
20 RECORDING FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES You can rec ord directl y from a tuner, a rad io, or a TV that has a 1 / 8 -inch (3.5 -mm) ja ck. Use a dubbing patch cord (suc h as Cat. No. 42-21 52) to connect the CTR-11 6’s MIC jack to t he head- phone ou tput jack of an extern al compo nent.
21 TA P E T I P S ERASING A RECORDING If you want t o erase an en tire casse tte or a portion of a re cord- ing, in sert th e suppli ed erase plug into the MI C jack.
22 To preve nt accide ntal erasu re of a t ape recordi ng, use a screw- driver to remove o ne or bo th of the cassett e tape’s e rase- protecti on tabs.
23 RESTORING T APE T ENSI ON AND SOUND QUALITY After you play a cassette tape se veral times , the tape might be- come t ightly w ound on the ree ls. This can cau se playb ack sound q uality to deteriorate . To restore the sound quality, f ast-forwa rd the tape fro m the be- ginning to th e end of o ne side , then complete ly rewind it.
24 CARE AND MA IN TENANCE To enjoy your C TR-116 fo r a long ti me: • Keep the CTR-1 16 dry . If it gets wet, wipe it dry immedi- ately . • Use an d store the C TR-1 16 only in norma l temperatu re envir onm ents . • Handl e the CTR-1 16 gentl y and ca refully .

Use a cott on swab d ipped in ta pe hea d cleaner o r dena- tured al cohol to clean the re cord/play back he ad, pinc h roller , tape guide s, erase h ead, and c apstan.
