3 FCC IN FORM A TION The Fed eral Communications Com- mission (FCC) does n ot require you to have a li cense to operate this CB. How ever, t h e F CC does require you to read a nd know Part 95 of FCC Rules . These r ules apply t o the oper- ation of a Class D CB .

6 • I f you use the TRC-499 in a vehicle, m ount it securely t o avoid damag e to the CB or vehi- cle during sudden s tarts or stops. Follow these steps to mount the CB using th e supp lied hardwa re. 1. Using the moun ting bracket as a template, mark t he positions for the screw holes.
7 Connect ing an Ant enna Onc e you ch oose an ant enna, fo llow the m ounting instructions suppl ied with it. Then route the antenna cable to the CB and conne ct t he cable to the ANTENNA jack on the back of the CB. Cautions: • Do not run the cable over sharp edges or moving parts.

9 OPERA TIO N Before you start using your CB, y ou shou ld know how to use it effectively and c ourteously. “CB Operat ion Tips” cont ains inform ation that w ill help you use and enjoy your CB. RECEIVING TRANSM ISSIONS AND ADJUSTING SQ UELCH Caution: Do not at tempt t o use your CB without first connecting a n anten- na t o it.
10 1. Follow Steps 1-5 under “Rec eiv- ing T ra nsmissions and Adjusting Squelch.” 2. Hold the m icroph one 2 or 3 inches from your m outh. The n press and hold down th e micro- phone tal k button and s pea k into the micr ophone in a normal voice.

These codes pe rmit faste r communi cation and better intelligibility in noisy ar- eas. 13 TROUBLESHOOTING If your CB is not working as it should, follow t he suggestions below to see if you can eliminate the problem. If you can not, take the CB t o your local Radio Shack store for assistance. S y mptom Check That: T rouble with rec eption • The CB is turned on.
14 REDUCING NOI SE The Aut omatic No ise Lim iting (ANL) circuit helps keep back ground noise to a minimum . However, stron g sources of elec trical noise (such as your vehicl e’s ignition, ano ther radio, or spark plugs) migh t be m ore tha n the circuit can com pensate for.
15 MAIN TENANCE Your TRC -499 40-Channe l 2-Way CB Radio is a n example of superior design and craftsmans hip. The f o llowing sugg estions will help you care for your C B so you can enjoy it for years. Keep the CB dry. If it ge ts wet, wipe it dry imm ediately.
16 REPLACING THE FUSE The TRC-499’s 2-amp fuse helps protect you r CB from power surges and s hort circui ts. If t he f use is blown, replace it with a 2-amp, fast-acting glass fuse (Cat. No. 270-1 007). Follow these steps t o replace the fus e. 1. Make sure t he power s ource and CB are both turned off.
