9 Instal lation • The USOC num ber of the jack to be install ed is RJ 1 1C (RJ1 1W for a wall plat e). On a Desk T op 1. Plug one e nd of t he su ppl ied l ong m odu - lar cord i nto the TEL LI NE j a c k o n t h e bac k of th e bas e. 2. Plug the mo dular cord’ s othe r end i nto a modula r telephon e line jack.

11 Instal lation 3. Put the battery p ack i n the compar tment , then repl ace th e cover . To char ge the battery pack, sim ply place the hands et o n the ba se, fa cin g eith er up or down. The CHARGE/IN USE indica tor on the base li ghts. Recha rge the battery pack when Low Bat- tery flashe s on th e displa y.

14 Telephone Operation T URNING CALLER ID/CALL W AITING ON OR OFF If you have Call Waiti ng and Call er ID ser- vice, y ou can set th e answe ring syste m to show Caller ID informati on for an incoming call ev en while y ou are on the ph one. Follow these steps to turn the Ca ller I D/Call Waiting feature on or off.
15 Telephone Operation When you re ceive a call, Incoming Call appears on the di splay. To answer it , lift the handse t from the b ase and pr ess TA L K . If auto tal k is on, just lift the han dset from the base o r pre ss a ny ke y. To end a cal l, plac e the hands et on the ba se or pr ess TA L K .
16 Telephone Operation SWITCHING BETWEEN THE HANDSET AND SPEAKERPHONE To switch to the speakerph one while you are using th e handset, pre ss SPEA KER on the base.
17 Telephone Operation PAGING To pag e the perso n who ha s th e hands et or to loc ate the handse t when the ph one is not in use, pre ss PA G E on the ba se. T he hand set beeps for 5 sec onds an d the display shows Paging . For a longer handset b eep, h old down PA G E f or at le ast 2 seco nds .
18 Memory Dialing ˆ Memory Dialing You can store up to 2 0 phone numbers and names in memory , then dia l a sto red numbe r by ente ring its m emory lo cation nu mber. Each stor ed numb er can be up t o 20 digi ts, and eac h name c an be up t o 13 chara cters.
19 Memory Dialing 6. Press CH/SELECT . Store Number appears . 7. Enter the phone num ber an d any to ne or pause en tries (s ee “Using T one Servic es On a Puls e Line” on Page 16 and “Entering a Pause”). 8. Press CH/SELECT . The phone beeps and Memory nn Stored appears.
20 Caller ID Operation DIALING A MEMORY NUMBER To dial a num ber sto red in memor y, lift the handse t and pre ss MEM . T he list of memory locatio n numbe rs appears. C hoose a memo - ry loc ation (0 1–20) by pres sing a number or by repeat edly pre ssing VO L/CID 8 8 8 8 or 9 9 9 9 , then press TA L K .
21 Caller ID Operation The top li ne of eac h record sh ows the d ate, time and the number of cal ls from that num - ber. The second line shows th e ca ller’s name, an d the th ird line s hows the caller’s phone n umber. To exit t he Calle r ID record dis play, pre ss CALL ID .
22 Answering System Operation 3. Choose a memory location (01–2 0) by pressin g a number or by re peatedly press ing VOL/CI D 9 9 9 9 or 8 8 8 8 , then press CH/SELECT . If the sel ected loc ation is em pty , the phone bee ps to co nfi rm th at it s tore d the number , then the Caller ID record appears .
23 Answering System Operation The ot her is simply an anno uncemen t and does no t let th e cal ler lea ve a mes sage: “H el- lo, no one is availa ble to ta ke yo ur call.” The answe ring sy stem use s this message when REC TIME is set to ANN (an nouncem ent only ).
24 Answering System Operation • The cal ler hangs up. • The m aximum m essa ge lengt h is reached . • The answ ering syst em detec ts a busy signal or more than 7 secon ds of silenc e. • Y ou pick u p the ans wering syste m’s handse t or any phone on the sa me phone l ine.
25 Answering System Operation ADJUSTING THE ANSWERING SYSTEM’ S VO L U M E To adju st the speake r’s volu me, re peatedly press VOLUME 8 8 8 8 or 9 9 9 9 on th e base. The volume setting from 1 (low est) to 10 (h igh- est) appea rs in the messag e counte r win- dow.

27 Troubleshooting ˆ T rou bleshootin g We do n ot ex pect you to h ave any problems with your ans wering system, but i f you do , these sugges tions mi ght he lp. Proble m Suggesti on Low volume or unusual sound s. Someone has picked up another phone on the same line.

If the ba ttery pa ck does not hold a charg e for more than 2 ho urs after an overn ight charge , replace it with a ne w 3.
