3 Important: Cordless phones such as this one require AC power to operat e. When t he A C power is o ff, you cannot dial out or receive i ncoming c alls us ing your ET-539 . For this reason, t he ET - 539 cordless phone should not be your only teleph one.

7 Mou nting the Base o n a W al l Plate You need a standard wall p late (not supplied) f or this mount ing me thod. 1. Plug on e end o f the sho rt modul ar cord into the phone jack on the back of the base. 2. Route the short cord downward through the top left slot on the base's bo ttom and under th e clips as show n.
8 8. Align the bracket's keyhole slots with the wall plate studs and slide the ba se down ward to secure i t. 9. Press and lift out the hands et holder . Rotate the ho lder 180 degrees as shown, an d then s nap it back into place s o it holds the handset.
9 4. Align th e tabs on the bracket w it h the slots on the back of the ba se and pus h up on the brack et unt il it snaps i n p lace. Note: If you later w ant to remo ve t h e br ac ket , p r es s PUSH and s lide the bracket down t o remove it from the base's bot tom.
10 PREP ARA TION CONNECTING THE BA TTER Y Before you us e your phone for the first time, you mus t conne ct the batt ery and charge it for 15 hours. Slide off the battery com partment cov- er on the back of the handset and con- nect the battery’s pl ug to t h e pins inside the compartm ent.
11 • If the C H AR G E /T AL K in d ic at or does not light wh en you place the handset on the bas e, be sure the battery is connected to t h e pins inside th e battery compartment (see "Repl acing the Battery") and the AC adapter is securely c on- nected t o the base.
12 OPE RA TION MAKING/AN SWERING A CALL You can use your cordless telephone at t he base or away from t he base. Ful- ly extend the h andset ’s an tenna. Using the Handset at th e Base You can use the handset at t h e ba se like a reg ular corde d telephone.
13 CHANGING CH ANNELS Your ET-539’s Auto-Scan f eature au- to matical ly se lects t he c learest chan- nel when you pick up the phon e. If you experience interference during a c all, press CH to sw itch to the next channel (25 in a ll) until you receive the b est re- ception.
14 USING T ONE SERV ICES ON A PULSE LINE Some special services, such as ba nk by phone, require t one signals. If you have pulse service, you can still u se the se s pec ial ton e s erv ices by follo w - ing th ese steps . 1. Set TONE/PULSE on the bas e to PULSE .
15 Storin g a Number in Memory 1. With the h andset’s power on, press MEM O R Y . The key pad ligh ts. Note: Wh ile you are storing a number in memory , if you do not press any button on the keypad within about 9 seconds, a buz z sounds, then the k eypad light t u rns of f .
16 Ente rin g a Pa use in a M emo ry N um ber In some teleph one systems , you m ust dial an acces s code (9, for ex ampl e) and wait for a second dial tone b efore you can dial an out side number.
17 TRO UBLESHOOTI NG We do not expect you to have any problems with y our telephone, but if you do, the following sugges tions mig ht help . If y ou st ill h av e pro blem s , check ot her phones on t he same line to see if they work properly.

20 REPLACING THE BA TTER Y If you follow the inst ructions in “Cha rg- ing the Battery, ” the supplied ba ttery should last abo ut a year. Whe n the battery loses its ability to fully ch arge, order a 3.6-v olt, 300-milli am p ba ttery with a c onnector that fits the connector in the batt e ry compartment.
