8 INSTALLA TION MOUNTING THE P H ONE You can p lace the ET–6 85’s bas e on a desk or tabl e, or mount i t on a standar d wall plate or dire ctly on a wa ll.
9 2. T o connect the pho ne to a two-line phone jack , plug one end of the sup- plied lon g two- l ine mod ula r cor d into the TEL LINE 1/2 jac k on the ba ck of the phone.
10 4. Route the ada pter ’s cor d throu gh the strain r elief slot on the botto m of the brac ket. 5. Plug the ada pter i nto a stan dard AC outlet. 6. Connect the pho ne cord(s) to the modular phone lin e jack(s ). 7. Raise the base ’s antenna to a verti - cal p osition.
11 3. Insert the supp lied AC adapt er ’s barrel plu g into the DC IN 9V ja ck on the back of the bas e. 4. Route the ada pter ’s cor d throu gh the narrow groove on the bracket. If you are u sing t wo phone cords, route t he sec ond cor d thro ugh one of the wide grooves on the br acket.
12 CONNECTING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK The ET-6 85 comes wi th a recha rgeable nickel -cadmium b attery p ack in the handset but not co nnecte d. Before usi ng your pho ne, you must con nect the bat - tery pack, th en charge it for about 24 hours.
13 • Use a pen cil eraser to clea n the chargi ng contacts on the handset and the bas e abou t once a m onth. • If the ba ttery pack beco mes com - pletely d ischa rged or th e base lo ses power whil e the handset i s away from it , the security code m ight be lost.
14 If the dial tone conti nues, that line has puls e serv ice. 4. Press LINE 2 , li st en fo r the d ia l to ne, and repe at Step 3. If you hav e tone service o n both lin es, le ave PULSE-TONE set t o TON E . If you hav e pulse servi ce on ei ther line, se t PULSE-TONE to PULSE (pulse ).

17 BASIC OPERATION Note : You ca n use t he keypa d on ei ther the handset or the base to operate the ET-685. T o make a call wi th the s peak- erphone, you must use the base’ s key- pad; to ma ke a call with the hands et, you m ust use th e hands et’s ke ypad.
18 USING THE SPEAKERPHONE Making a Cal l To make a cal l usin g the speak erpho ne, press LINE 1 or LINE 2 , listen for the dial tone, then dial th e numb er.

20 3. O nce you have the sec ond party on the line , press CONFERENCE ( CONF/DELETE on the handset) to bring i n the fir st party. Both l ine indi - cators on the base l ight g reen.
21 USING THE ET-685 WITH EXTE NS IO N PHONES The ET-68 5 detects whe n an extensi on phone is in use, and th e correspo nding line indi cator fla shes o n the base and In Use flashe s on the ha ndset’s dis- play alo ng with Line 1 or Line 2 . To joi n the co nver sation fr om th e hand - set or base , press the line but ton for the line in us e.
22 USING T ONE SERVICES ON A PULS E LI NE Some spec ial ser vices, suc h as ba nk- by-phon e, requi re tone signa ls. If y ou have puls e service, yo u can sti ll use these spe cial tone s ervices by foll owing thes e steps. 1. Be s ure PULSE-TONE is set to PULSE .
23 USING A HEADSET You can make or answer cal ls with hands-f ree conven ience using an op- tional h eadset (avail able at your local RadioShac k store) th at has a 3 / 32 -inch plug. To connec t the headse t, pull ope n the rubber cover ma rked on t he side of the handse t, then inser t the 3 / 32 -inch pl ug into the j ack.
24 MEMORY OPERATION You can store up to 30 num bers in the handset’ s memory and anoth er 10 in the base’s memory, then di al a stored num - ber by pres sing a two -digit me mory lo ca- tion num ber (or se lecting from the lis t of stored num bers) .
25 If yo u make a mistak e, mov e the cursor ov er the error , then en ter the corre ct charac ter , or press CONF/ DELETE to delete a c haract er . T o delete al l char acters, h old d own CONF/DELETE for at least 1 seco nd. 6. Press SELECT . Store Number appears .
26 T o clear a sto red num ber , simpl y store a ne w number in its pl ace. Or , press MEM twice. Then pres s the memory location numbe r ( 0 – 9 ) you want to cl ear . A t one so unds. Use the su pplie d memory direct ory stic ker to reco rd yo ur stor ed numbe rs.
27 Note: You can also pr ess LINE 1 or LINE 2 first, then ch oose a mem ory numbe r to dial. To dial a nu mber stored in the bas e’s memory, pr ess LINE 1 or LINE 2 . When you h ear a di al tone, press MEM and en- ter the memo ry locat ion numb er for the number you want to d ial.
28 CALLER ID OPERAT ION (HANDSET ONLY) If you s ubscri be to Call er ID se rvice from your ph one co mpany, the pho ne compa - ny sends informa tion ab out the c all, as well as th e time and date , betwee n the first an d second rings of every call y ou receiv e.
29 CALLER ID MESSAGES DIALING NUMBERS FROM A CALLER ID RECORD To dia l a local number stored i n a Call er ID reco rd, recall the rec ord, then p ress LINE 1 or LINE 2 . If it is a long di stance call, press 1 ( 1 appea rs befor e the dis- played number ) before yo u press LIN E 1 or LINE 2 .
30 If a reco rd exis ts in the selec ted lo ca- tion, Replace Memory? appear s, promptin g you to confirm the repla ce- ment. Move the cur sor to Yes or No , then press SELECT . DELETING CALL ER ID RECORDS You can de lete Call er ID reco rds indivi d- ually or a ll at o nce.
31 T ROUBLESHOOTING We do not ex pect you to have any pr oblems wi th your phone , but if yo u do, the fo llow- ing sugg estio ns mig ht hel p . Pr ob lem Sug gestion The phone doe s not w ork or works poorly . Be sure the base’ s phone line cord and A C adapter are correc tly and securel y connec ted.
32 If the base los es power whi le the hands et is off of it, the securi ty access- protec tion code migh t change. Resto re power to the bas e, then place the handset bac k on the base and leave it there for a few s econds. If you still have problems , discon nect the ph one.

34 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you foll ow the in structi ons in “ Conne ct- ing and Charg ing the Batter y Pac k” on Page 12, the batt ery pack shou ld last about a year . If the batter y pack will not hold a c harge f or more than 2 h ours af- ter an overn ight ch arge, repla ce it with a new 3.
