4 READ THIS BEFORE IN ST ALLA TION Each device that you connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We refer to this power d raw as the device’s ringer equivalence num ber , or REN. The R EN is on the bottom of the base. If you are using more t han one p hone or other devi ce on the line, add up all t he RENs .

6 PREPARA TION SELECTING A L OCATION You can p l ace t he phone on a desk top or table, mount it on a standard wa ll plate, or mount it directly on a wall.
7 PLACING THE BASE ON A DESK T OP Follow th ese steps when y ou place the base on a desk, shelf, or t able. 1. Remove the b racket by ho lding in both tabs and gently pulling o ut t he wide end of the bracket. 2. Plug one end of the suppli ed long modul ar cord into the phone jack on the back of the base.
8 7. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. 8. Lift the base’s antenna to a vertical position. MOUNTING THE BASE ON A W ALL PLATE 1. Remove the bracket by holdi ng in both tabs and gent ly pu lling out the wide end of the bracket. 2. Plug one end of the supplied short modular cord into the phone jack on the back of t h e base.
9 5. Insert the t abs o n the narrow en d of the bracket into t he upper s lots on the bottom of the base, then push the tabs on the wide end of the bracket into the lower s l ots on t he bottom of the base.
10 4. Insert the sup plied AC adapter ’s barrel plug into the DC 12V jack on the back of t h e base. Route the adapter ’ s cord through t he right slot on the bottom of the base.
11 CONNECT ING AND CHARGING THE BAT TERY PACK The E T-919 com es w it h a rechar geable nickel-cadmi um battery pack in the hands et but not connected. Before using your ph one, you mu st connect the bat - tery pack and then charge it for about 24 hours.
12 • When you first use the phone after charging or rec harging the battery pack, the pho ne might not work and you migh t hear a n error tone . If this happens , return the handset to the base for a f ew seconds .
13 T URNING THE RINGER ON /OFF You can turn t he E T-919’s ringer on and off. Set RINGER on the si de of t he han d- set t o ON to hea r an incom ing call or a page from t h e base. Set RINGER to OFF to silence the ringer. Note : With the ringer off, you can still make or receive call s using this cordles s phone.
14 OPE R ATION MAKING AN D RECEIVING CALLS To make a call, simply lift the handset and press TA L K . When you hear the dial tone, dial t he desired phone number or memory n umber (see “ Mem ory Dialing” on Page 16). To answer a call if the handset is on the base, sim ply lift the handset an d beg in your conversation.
15 Press MUTE during the c a ll. T he MUTE indicat or on t he handset lights steadily. Press MUTE again to resum e your phone c onversation. The M UTE indica- tor turn s off. SETTING THE HANDSET’ S VO L U M E You can sel ect one of three diff erent vol- ume set tings (soft, normal, loud) using VOLUME s or t during a call.
16 For exam ple, if you hav e Call Waiting, press FLASH to an swe r an incom ing call without disconnect ing t h e current call. Pr ess FLASH again t o return to t he first call. Note: If you do not have any spe cial phone s ervices, p ressing FL A SH might disconnect the current call.
17 • T o keep your a ccounts secure, we recomm end you do not store your person al access code for services such as ba nk-by-phone in a mem ory loc a t ion . 1. Press MEM . Th e T ALK indicator blinks. 2. Enter the nu mber and any tone and paus e entries (see “Ent ering a Pause”).
18 T est i ng St or ed Em erge ncy Numbers If you store an emergency service’s number (police de partment, fire depart- ment, am bulance) and you choos e to test the stored number, make the test call during the late even ing or early morning hours to avoi d peak demand periods.
19 T ROUBLESHOOTI NG W e do not expect you to hav e any problem s with your phon e, but if you do, t he follow- ing sug gestions might help. Probl em Su gg estion Low volume or unusual sounds . Som eone has picked up anoth er phone on the same line. Hang up the other phone.
20 If you still have problem s, disconnec t the p hone. If o ther phones on the sam e line work properly, the fault is in this phone or its inst a llation. If you cannot find the prob- lem, tak e your E T-919 t o your local RadioS hack store f or assistance.
21 CARE AND MAINTENANCE Your ET-919 9-M emory 900-MH z Cordles s T elephone is an example of sup erior de- sign and c raftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care f or your cord- less telephon e so you can enjoy it for years. Keep the phon e dry.
22 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you f ollow the instructions in “ Conn ect- ing and Charging the Battery Pack ” on Page 11, the battery pa ck should la st about one year. If the bat tery does not hold a charge f or more t han 2 hours a f- ter an overnight charge, replace the ba t- tery with a new 3.
23 Importa nt: This product cont ains a re- charge able ni ckel cad mium battery pack. At th e end of the battery pack’s useful li fe, it must be recycled or dis- pose d of properly. Con tact your local, coun ty, or state hazardou s waste man- ageme nt authorities for information on recycling or dispos al programs in yo ur area.
