6 In st all at i on n Installation SELECTING A LOCATION You can place the phone on a d esk top or t able, mount it on a st an- dard wa ll plate, or mount it d irectly on the wal l.
7 Installation PLACING THE BASE ON A DESK T OP Follow these steps when y ou place the base on a desk, shelf, or table. 1 Plug one end of the suppli ed long m odular co rd into the m odu- lar cord jack on the back of the base. 2 Route the m odular cord through t he channel s lot on the b ottom of the base.

9 Installation INSTALLI NG AND CHARGI NG THE BAT TERY PACK The SP-514 is pack aged with a rechargeable nickel-c adm ium bat- tery pack. Before using your phone, you must install t he battery pack and then charge it for 10 hours. Press down and slide off the compart men t cover.
10 In st all at i on Notes: ² W hen you first use t h e phone after charging or recha rging the battery pack, the phone might not work and you might hear a two- beep signal when you pres s PHONE . I f this happen s, return the hands et to the base for about 30 se conds.
11 Prepara tion ² The sup plied battery pack should last for a bout a y ear . When it loses its ability t o fully recharge, order a repl aceme nt battery pack from your local RadioShack store (see “Replacing the Handset Battery Pack” on Page 2 4).
12 T elep ho ne Op eration SETTING THE HANDSET ’ S RINGER You can turn off the ha ndset’s ringer by setting RI NGER on the side of the handset to OFF . Turn it back on by settin g RINGER to ON . n T elephone Operation MAKING AND RECEIVING A CALL To make a call, lift the hand- set and press PHONE .

15 T eleph on e O pera tio n USING F LASH FLASH performs the electronic equivalent of a switchhook opera- tion for special services, such as Call Waiting. For exam ple, if you have Cal l Waiting, pres s FL A S H to a n- swer an incom ing call without discon necting the c urrent call.
16 T elep ho ne Op eration USING T ONE SERVICES ON A PULSE LINE Som e spec ial services, such as bank-by-phon e, require tone sig- nals. If you have pulse service , you can still use these special tone services by following these steps. 1 Dial the service’s main number.

18 T elep ho ne Op eration 1 Press PROG/MEM . 2 Enter the number you want to store. (T o store the last number yo u dialed, sim- ply press REDI AL .) If you ent er a wrong digit, press PHONE tw ice to exit the p roce- dure. Then st art over at S tep 1.
19 T eleph on e O pera tio n For a l onger pause, hold down th e number key unt il you hear addi- tional be eps. Dialin g a Mem ory Number Press PHONE . When you hear the dial tone, press PROG/MEM , then press the number button for the numb er you are calling .
20 Tr oubl esh oot ing n T roubleshooting W e do not expect you to hav e any problems wit h your SP-514, but if you do, the following suggestions m ight help. Problem Su ggestion The han dset does not work. Move the handset closer to the base. Be sure t he phone line cord and AC adapt - er are correctly and securely conne cted.
21 Troubl esh oo tin g Call is n oisy . Do not place the base near appliances or large metal objects . Fully extend and raise the b ase’s ant enna to a vert ical position.
22 Tr oubl esh oot ing If you still have problems, disconne ct the phone. If other phones on the same line work prop erly, the fault is i n this p hone or its installa- tion . If you cannot find the problem, take y our SP-514 t o your local RadioShac k store for as sistance.

24 Ca re and Mai ntena nc e REPLACING THE HANDSET BAT TERY PACK If you follow th e instruct ions in “Installin g and Char ging th e Battery Pack” on Page 9, the battery pack shou ld last about one year. If the batt ery pack does not hold a charge f or more than 2 hours after an ov ernight c harge, replace the ba ttery pack with a new 3.
