5 PREP ARA T ION SELECTI NG A LOCATION The T AD-2 77 is des igned to rest on a f l at sur fa ce s uch as a de skt op o r c ou n t er t o p. S elect a location that is: • Near an AC outlet • Near a m o dular telephone line jack If the phone l ine jack i s not a modul ar jack, you must updat e the wir i ng.
6 CONNECTING POWER Use the supplied AC ad apt er to pow er your TA D- 277. Cautio ns: • T he supplied Class 2 AC ad apter supplies 9 volts of power , delivers at least 500 millia mps, and has a plug that properly f its the T AD- 277’s 9V AC 500mA jack .
7 2. Lift open t he casse tte com part- ment door . 3. Hold down OGM REC/ PLA Y until t h e mes s ag e i n di ca t or tu r ns of f, then releas e the button. T he T AD- 277 beeps once. 4. When th e message i ndicator turns on again after a few momen ts, speak cle arly in a normal vol ume from ab out 12 inch es away from the micr ophone.
8 CONNECTING TO THE T ELE PHONE LINE To complete the connection s, insert the modul ar plug into a modul ar phone ja ck. To connect a t elephone to your TAD- 277, in sert the telephone ’s m odular plug into PHONE JACK on the back of t h e T A D- 27 7 .
9 ANSWE RIN G SY ST EM OP ERAT I ON SETTI NG THE T AD-277 TO ANSWER CALL S Rotate VOLUME to the right until it clicks to turn on the TAD-277. When the message ind icator stays on and the TAD-27 7 does not sou nd any tones, it is ready to answer calls.
10 Note: If you pick up the p hone just as the TAD-27 7 answ ers, the TAD-277 might not stop recording the m essage. If this happ ens, briefly hang up the phone then pick it up again. PLAYIN G MESSAG ES When you hav e messages , the mes- sage indi cat or blinks .
11 REMOTE CONTROL OP ERATI ON While you are away from your h ome or office, you can use a touch-tone phone or a pu lse phone wit h a pock et ton e d ia ler to : • Set the T AD-2 77 to answer calls .
12 To replay t he mess ages , w ait u ntil y ou hear a single beep (ab out 8 secon ds after the four sho r t beeps ), then enter your remote operation s ecurity code again.
13 TRO U BL ESHOOTI NG We do not expect you to hav e any problems with your TAD-277, but i f you do, be sure you i nstalled the tape correctly and turned on the system. I f you still have a problem, this chart might help. If n ot, t ake the TA D-277 to your l ocal Ra dioShack store for as sistance.
14 Problem C ause Solution Incoming m essage sounds distorted. The tape head is dirty . Clean the hea d using a tape head-cl eaning kit (s ee “Cleaning the T ape-Han- dling Parts” on Page 17). The tape is worn o ut. Unplug the adap ter from the AC ou t le t , r e p l ac e t h e t ape , then plu g the adapter back into the AC outlet.
15 The m essage indica- tor blinks continu- ously , but there are fewer than five i ncom- ing messages . Power was interrupted to the T AD-277. Press PLA Y . The T A D-277 plays back any saved mes- sage s then any new incom- ing m essages. Problem C ause Solution 43-7 77 .

17 CLEANING THE T APE- HANDLING PARTS To r est or e the sound quality, you must inspec t and clean the tape head. Dirt , dust, or particles of the tape’s coati ng can accumulate on the tape heads and other part s that the tape touches. This can greatly re- duce the perform ance of the cassette play er.
