The TAD (Telephone An swering Devi ce) has about a 15-m inute record capa city and stores all messages on a microchip.
3 20 Channels — automatica lly selects a clear channel when you make or an swe r a call, even while talking. Security Access-Prot ection Code — automatica lly prevents o ther cordles s phone users from using your phone line while the handset is off the base.
4 Phone Pick-Up Detection — stops re- cording when you pick up any phone on the same lin e as the TAD, and r esets to answer the next call. Call Screening — lets you listen as a caller leaves a message so you can de - cide whether or not to answe r the call.
5 Important: • Cordless phones such as t his one require AC power to o perate. When the AC power is o ff, yo u cannot dial out or receive incoming calls using your T AD-728.

10 INSTALLATION MOUNTING THE PHONE You can place the TAD- 728's base on a desk or table , mount it on a stand ard wall plate, or mount it directly on a wall.
11 3. Insert the supplie d AC adapte r's barrel plug into the DC 9V AC ADAPTER jack on the back of the base. 4. Route the adap ter's cord through the strain relie f slot on the b ase. 5. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. PF (power failure) f lashes on the digital d isplay .
12 6. Plug the adapt er into a stand ard AC outlet. PF (power failure) flashes on the display . 7. Lift the ba se’s a ntenna to a vert ical position. Note: To mount the TAD dir ectly on a wall, you need two screws (not supplied) with heads that fit into the key hole slots on the bottom of the base.
13 4. Replace the cover . To charge the batter y pack, place the handset eit her faceup o r facedown o n the base. The IN USE/CH ARGE indica- tor on the base light s and Charging and then No calls app ear on the handset display . Recharge the battery pac k when Re- charge! Battery low flashe s on the handset dis pla y.
14 • The supplied batter y pack should last for about a year . When it loses its ability to fully recharge, order a replacemen t battery pack from your local RadioShack stor e (see “Replacing the Battery Pack” on Page 42). SETTING THE DIALING MODE Set PULSE/TONE on th e back of the base for the type of service you have .
15 Setting the Handset's Ringer V olume Be sure RINGER OFF/ON located on th e side of the handset is set to ON . 1. At any time exce pt during a call, lift the handset and press FLASH/ MENU . Ringer Vol.: High appears. Note: Y ou cannot set the handset’ s ringer volume if you p ress TA L K when you lift the h andset.
16 3. Press to change the Caller I D/ Call W aiting setting. Off , On , or Options appears indicatin g the selected setting. 4. T o clear the display when you finish, press FLASH/MEN U or return t he handset to t he base.
17 T ELEPHONE OPERATION MAKING AND RECEIVING CALLS To make a call, lift the han dset and press TA L K . TALK and the call’s elapsed time ( 0:01 ) appear on th e handset display, and the call’s elapsed time starts to coun t. When you hear the dial tone, dial t he number.
18 • The redial memory al so holds pause entries. See “ Entering a Pa use” on Page 21. USING FLASH Flash performs the elect ronic equiva- lent of a switchhook o peration for spe- cial services, such as Call Waiting. For example, if you have Ca ll Waiting, press FLASH/MENU to answer an incom- ing call without disconn ecting the cur- rent call.
19 Paging from the Base to the Handset To send a page fr om the base to the handset, pr ess INTERCOM on the base. The handset beeps twice per seco nd for 15 seconds. The handset's display shows Paging . The base’s IN USE/ CHARGE indicator flashes.
20 3. T o enter the name, use the dialin g buttons. The character chart below shows you which dialing butt ons control each charac ter . Repeatedly press a dialing butt on until the char - acter you want appears on the d is- play . Press to select lowercase letters, and press to select upper case letters.
21 Deleting an Entry 1. Press DIRECT OR Y . 2. Press or to display the n umber you want to delete. 3. Press DELETE . The display shows Delete? DELETE=OK prompting you to confirm the deleti on. 4. If this is the entry you want to delete, press DELETE again.
22 • If you place th e handset on the ba se to recharge it while the headset is connected, be su re the handset seats properly . With a head set connecte d, you can make or answe r calls as usual u sing the keys on the handset.
23 CALLER ID OPERATION If you subscribe to Caller ID service from your phone company, the phone compa- ny sends information about the call, as well as the time and date, betw een the first and second rings of every call yo u receive.
24 Reviewing the Callers List To review the callers list, lift the han dset and press or once. The display shows one of the following callers list he aders. Repeatedly press to scroll thr ough the callers list from th e newest to the oldest , or to scroll back through the callers list.
25 Dialing Numbers Using the Callers List 1. Press or to recall the callers list header . 2. Find the ca ller in the list by pressing or re peatedly . Note: The caller in formation must have the phone number . If the num- ber is not shown on the display , you cannot call back from the list.
26 Caller ID Messages Display Description Private name or Private number The caller has blocked the Caller ID information from being sent. Unknown name or Unknown number The caller is not within a Caller ID service area. Forwarded call Y ou have a call from your call- fo rw ar din g se rvic e company .
27 Using Call W aiting Options Services You must do the followin g before you can use the Call Waiting Opt ion s Servic- es: • Subscribe to th e service from your telephone compan y . • Set the Caller ID/Call Waiting fea- ture to Option s (see “Setti ng Caller ID/Call W aiting On/Off Options” on Page 15).
28 Call W aiting Options Call Waiting Options Services provide you with several choices for how to handle the second call. Display Description Switch Caller Switch between a waiting caller and a first caller .
29 T AD OPERATION You can use the base or the h andset to control the TAD. With the handset, yo u set the remote operati on person al identifica - tion number ( PIN), select the outgoin g message, record ou tgoing messages, memos, or tele phone conversat ion, turn the TAD on and off, play messages, an d delete a current message.
30 2. Repeatedly press PREVIOUS or SKIP on the bas e until the T AD announces and displays the number of rings you d esire – “two” s o the T AD answers on the second ri ng, “five” to answe r on the fifth r ing, or “toll saver” when you want to use the toll-saver funct ion.
31 • If there is a powe r failure, PF flashes on the digital display when power returns. Re set the day and time. SELECTING AN OUTGOING MESSAGE The TAD has two prerecord ed messag- es. One asks the caller to leave a mes- sage (“Hello, no one is avail able to take your call.
32 2. When finished , press OGM REC again (or pr ess STOP ). The T AD beeps, plays ba ck the message, then beeps again . The display shows A (or AO if you set it to announce ment-only), and the num- ber of messag es (if the T AD has new messages) alte rnately .
33 SCREENING CALLS You can let the TAD answer calls for you while you listen to the caller's message through the base' s speaker. You can ad- just the volum e of the caller's voice us- ing VOLUME on the base.
34 Note: It is illegal in some areas to record a conversati on without the consent of all parties to t he conversat ion , includ ing the phone company. Check the laws in your area before you use the two -way record- ing feature. Using the Handset Press REMOTE then MEMO REC/3 .
35 While playing back the messa ges, PL (playback) an d the number of t he cur- rent messages flash on t he display. For example, if you have a total of four mes- sages (one old, th ree new), pr essing PLA Y/REPEA T/ displays 2 (the first new message) .
36 REMOTE OPERATION USING THE T OLL-SAVER When you call the TAD-728 and t he number of rings to answer calls is se t to “toll-saver,” it answers after about two rings if you have new messages (o nes you have not list ened to). If t here are no new messages, the TAD waits for ab out five rings before it answers.
37 2. When th e outgoing me ssage ends , press then enter yo ur 2-digit PIN within 2 seconds. The T AD announces “Y ou have xx new message(s)” (where xx is the numbers of me ssag es) or “Y ou have no messages,” then the T AD plays back the recor ded message s contin - uously .
38 T ROUBLESHOOTING We do not expect you to have an y problems with your p hone, but if you do, the follo w- ing suggestions might he lp. Problem Sugges tion The phone d oes not work o r works poorly . Check all phone line connections. Make sure the AC adapte r and batt ery pack are proper ly connected.
39 Severe noise interfere nce. Keep the handse t away from comput- ers, remote control toys, wirele ss micro- phones, alarm syste ms, intercoms, room monitors, fl uorescent lights, and electrical appliances. Move to anothe r location or turn of f the source of the interference.
40 If you still have problems, disconnect the phone. If other phones on the s ame line work properly, t he fault is in this ph one or its installat ion. If you ca nnot find the pr ob- lem, take your TAD-728 to your local RadioShack store for assistance.

42 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you follow the in structions in “Connect- ing and Charging the Bat tery Pack” on Page 12, the b attery pack should last about one yea r. If the bat tery pack does not hold a char ge for more than 2 ho urs after an overnigh t charge, replace it with a new 3.
43 THE FCC W ANTS Y OU T O KNOW In the unlikely event that your phone causes problems on th e phone line, the phone company can tempor arily discon- tinue your service.
