4 READ THIS BEFORE IN ST ALLA TION Your TAD-764 conforms to federal reg- ulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device you conne ct to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We refer to this power draw as the device’s ringer equivalence num ber , or RE N.

6 IN STALLATI ON INSTALLING A BACKU P BATTERY The TAD-764 requires AC pow er to op- erate. However, if A C power f ails or you unplug the TAD, a 9-volt backup battery (not supp lied) sav es the mes sages a nd the se tti ng s fo r th e da y , ti me, an d re- mote operation sec urit y code.
7 MOUNTING THE T AD Sele ct a location that is near both a modul ar telephone j ac k and an A C out - let. You c an place the TAD on a desk, o r mount it on a wall plate or directly on a wall. Your TAD-764 conne cts directly t o a modul ar telephone li ne jack.
8 6. Route the adapter ’s cord through the strain relief sl ot on the base. 7. Plug the ada pter into a stan dard AC out let. When y ou first connect pow er , the PLA Y/SKIP indicator flashes (until.
9 4. Insert the suppli ed AC adapter ’s barrel plug into the AC 9V 440mA jack on the back of the base. 5. Plug the other end of the short modul ar cord into the wall plate jack. T hen move the power c ord to the right of the two tabs, align the wall plate studs with the T AD’ s key- hole slots and slide the T AD down- ward to secure it.

11 7. Slide t he hands et clip up and o ut of its retaining slot, rotate it 180°, then slide th e clip back int o its slot . 8. Plug the ot her e nd of the c o iled cord into the handse t’s jack. 9. Place the h andset in the cradle. 10. Plug the m odular cord i nto a m odu- lar pho ne line jack.
12 PREPARA TION SETTI NG TH E DIALING MO DE Set TON E/ PU L SE on the handset for the type of service you hav e. If you are not sure which type y o u have, do this test. 1. Set TO NE/PULSE to TONE . 2. Lift the hands et and listen f or a dia l ton e .
13 3. Press ANSW ER/ST OP/DELETE . The T AD b eeps once an d announce s the hour and “AM” or “PM.” 4. T o chang e the hour , repeatedly press OGM/REPEA T to m ove back or PLA Y/SKIP t o m ov e fo rwa r d to the current hour . 5. Press ANSWER/ST OP/DELETE .
14 T ELE PHONE SETTI NG TH E HANDSET VO L U M E The ha ndset’s v olume con trol lets you adjust the sound you h ear through the handset. To increase or decrease the volume, roll the hands et’s volume c ontrol up or down. USING REDIAL You can quickly dial the last number di- aled.
15 USIN G THE PHONE NUMBER I NDEX CARD Use a straight ened p aper c lip or an oth- er small poi nt e d object to lift the plastic cover off the phone number index card. W r ite your pho ne number at the top and other important n ame s and n umbers below it.
16 ANSWE RIN G SY ST EM OP ERA T I ON RECORDING T HE OUTGOING MESSAGE Before you can set the TAD to answer call s and record mess a ges, you must record an outgoing m essage (OG M). Your o utgoing message c an be up to 60 seconds l ong. 1. Hold down OGM/REPEA T un ti l t he T AD beeps.
17 SETTI N G THE T AD TO ANSWER CALLS To set the TAD to answe r calls, press ANSWER/STOP/DELETE . • If an outgoing m essage i s re- corded , t he T AD announc es, “A n - swer on,” and t he ANSWER indicator li ghts.

19 Follow these steps to record a mem o. 1. Hold down PL A Y/ SK I P until the T AD beeps . 2. Position yours elf about 8 inche s away from the T AD and speak into the m icrophone (l ocated on the front of the T AD). 3. The T AD automat icall y stop s recording af ter 60 seconds, or you can pre ss ANSWER/ST OP/DELETE when you finish.
20 REMOTE OPERATIO N You can operate t he TAD from almost any touch-tone phone, or from a rotary phone using a poc ket tone-dialer (avail- able at your local RadioS hack store). Notes: • W hen m emory is full, the T AD answers the c all after two rings a nd announc es, “Memory is full.
21 REMOTE COMMANDS Press: T o: 0 Stop mess age pla ybac k or recording. 1P l a y O G M . 2 Record a new OG M. W hen the T AD announces “Record anno uncem ent,” begin speak ing. When you finish, press 0 . Th e T AD repea ts the OGM. 4 Play reco rded mess ages.
