Pr eface About the ASMI G 4 Mod ule The ASMI modu le (ASMI G4) p rovides remo te server man agement cap abilities: you can use the ASMI add-on card to man age and m onitor compo nents in you r servers. The ASMI G4 o ffers a comp rehensive hardware solution for server ma nagemen t.
Chapter 1. The Quick Start Guide About the Rarita n ASM I G 4 R emote Management Card Figure 1-1. Front View of the ASMI G4 Module The ASMI G4 add -on car d provides rem ote server ma nagement capabilities. Y ou can use the ASMI G4 add-on card to man age and m onitor compo nents in you r servers thro ugh the W AN /LAN.
Chapter 1. Th e Quick Start Guid e T able 1-1. Initial Net work Configuration P arameter V alue IP auto con figuration DHCP IP address - Netmask - Gatew ay - W arning If the DHCP conn ection f ails on boot up, the ASMI modul e will not hav e an IP address and will no t fu nction on th e net work.
Chapter 1. Th e Quick Start Guid e The Remote Console will behave exactly the same way as if you we re sitting directly in f ront of the screen of you r remote system. That means that both the keyboard and mouse can be used in the usual way . Open the console by choosing the appropriate link in the navigation frame of the HTML frontend .
Chapter 2. Intr oduction General Information The ASMI modu le is an integrated solution for your server system. Based on an emb edded operating system, the ASMI G4 add-o n card provides both exceptional stability and perma nent a v ailability even when your server is down or powered off.
Chapter 2. I ntr oduction • Sophisticated mou se tracking an d synchro nization • Local Mouse sup pression (only when using SUNs Java V irtual Machine) • W orks inde pendently from the remote ho st OS.
Chapter 2. I ntr oduction Category Probability CPU fan failure 8% RAM failure 4% Using the ASMI mo dule, admin istrators can deter mine wh ich kind of serious hard ware failure has occurred ( see T able 2-2 ).
Chapter 3. ASMI Installation Guide About the ASMI Add-On Card The ASMI add-o n car d r edirects local keyboard, mo use and video data to a rem ote ad ministration console. All data is transmitted u sing the TCP/IP proto col family . The ASMI add-on card is especially useful in a multi- administrator environmen t.
Chapter 3. ASMI Installa tion Guide Connecting the Ethernet The ASMI add-o n card has a dedicated RJ45 Ether net connector - this has to be pr ovided by the nativ e system. The conn ector may be used eithe r as a 10 0 M bps 1 00Base-TX connectio n or as a 10 Mbp s 10B ASE-T connectio n.
Chapter 4. ASMI G 4 Module Configuration Initial Con figuration The ASMI modu le’ s commu nication inter faces a re all based on TCP/IP . It comes pre-co nfigured with the IP configu ration listed in T ab le 4-1 . Additio nally you can do some simple co nfiguration u sing the serial interface.
