12 S afe ty Seat s Both front seats are el ectric ally ope rated. On cer tain m odels the d river´ s se at is equ ipped with a mem ory func tion . To facil itate g etting into t he car, both s eats can be adjus ted when either of the front doors is open .

18 S afe ty Safety belt pr etension ers The belts of th e front seats are fit ted w ith automati c prete nsioners and force limiters. These are activa ted in the event of a severe frontal or rear-end crash an d a side-on col li- sion, p rovided that the safety belt s are being worn.

38 S afe ty What wo n’t tri gger the front airb ags? The airba g wi ll not be ac tivate d in a ll front-end cra shes. For instan ce, if the car has hi t so methi ng re lati vely soft and yi eldi ng (e.g. a s now d rift or a hedg e) or a sol id object at a low impact speed, the air bag will not nece ssari ly be trigge red.

40 Security Doors Door handles Pull the handl e t o open the do or. If the do or is s tuck (e.g . if fro zen), h old the handle f rom abov e to se cure a better grip. Central locking Key / Remote c ontrol The key uni t consists of a mechan ical key with int egrated remote c ontrol.

42 Security Locking by k ey (1) When the c ar is lock ed and unloc ked t he theft alarm is a lso af fected . Turn the ke y clock wise: all do ors lo cked . The trunk l id/tailgate cannot be opened now from insi de us ing the swit ch on th e d river’s door.
43 Securit y If the car is left with th e doors open , the inte- rior l ighting and t he co urtesy lights in th e doors will be sw itched off automati cally after 20 minutes, to prevent a fl at battery. In such cases th e electrically op erated seats wil l not funct ion.
44 Security Trunk lid lock, 9-5 Seda n The trunk lid lock is independent of the cen- tral-lock ing sys tem. T he trun k lid releas e switch o n th e driv er’s d oor is inope rative when th e car is lock ed from the o utside or moving at a s peed greater than 2.
45 Securit y Tailgate, 9-5 SportWagon The tailg ate is not unl ocked whe n the other car doors are unlocke d. The tailgate bu tton on the dri ver’s door is inoperative when the car is l ocked o r movi ng at a spee d grea ter than 2.7 mp h ( 4 km/h).
46 Security Car alarm The ca r alar m (a nti- thef t syst em) is acti - vated/de activ ated wh en t he ca r is locked /unlocked by the rem ote control or by the key , see page 41. The ant enna for the ala rm system is locate d in the c enter c onsol e.

54 Instru ments an d controls Indicator and warning lights A number of indicator and warning light s will come on whe n the ignition is sw itched on prior to s tarting . Under n ormal conditio ns, these sh ould go out a fe w seconds after the engine h as s tarted (s ee pa ge 60).
55 Instruments and controls Warning, charging This ligh t will come on togeth er with if the batte ry is discharg ing. If it comes o n whil e you ar e dri vin g, sto p the c ar as soon as poss ible and s witch o ff the e ngi ne. Check th e altern ator dri ve be lt (se e page 212).

61 Instruments and controls Speedo meter (U.S. speedometer shown) The speed ometer receiv es signal s from the wheel sensors in the ABS system. If the NIGHT PANEL mode has been selecte d, the scale wil l be illumin ated up to 87 mph (140 k m/h). Th e rema inder of the scale wi ll be ill uminated if the s peed o f the car exceed s 84 mph (135 km/h).

73 Instruments and controls Wipers and was hers There are three inter mittent wi per positions. Moving the c ontrol stalk to the spring-l oaded position betw een 0 and 2 will produce a sin gle sweep of the wipe rs. The wi pers ar e desi gned f or opti ma l clean- ing at all drivin g spee ds.
