12 Safety Safet y belts Three-point inertia-ree l safety bel ts are provided for all se ats. The results of st udies show tha t it is equally important to wear safety belts in the rear seat a s in the front seats .
13 Safety Correct positi on for safety belt Conside r this: • P osi tion the l ap stra p snug ly and lo w across th e hips so t hat it just to uches th e thighs . The shoul der stra p must be as f ar in o n the shoul der as po ssib le. • Chec k to e nsure that the belt is not twis ted or rubbin g against a ny sh ar p edg es.
14 Safety Front safety belts Fasten th e belt by pulling the belt and insert- ing the tongue in the buckle. Chec k that it is securel y fastene d. Posi tion t he lap pa rt lo w acros s the hi ps. Grasp th e shoulde r belt clo se to the buck le and pull the belt towards the shoulde r to tighten t he lap be lt part.
15 Safety Adju st the be lt so t hat it i s as high up as possib le without rubbing ag ainst the neck. To avoi d chafing in the cas e of a sho rt person, t he guide can be l owered unti l the belt com es abou t an inch (a few cen time- ters) fr om the throat but still provides s afe restraint.
16 Safety Safety belt pretensioners Sport Sedan and SportCombi: The front safety be lts are eq uipped wit h pretens ion- ers and fo rce limi ters. The pr etensioners are activa ted in the ev ent of a viole nt frontal or si de-on c rash.

18 Safety Seats Manually adjust ed front seats 3 The follo wing fron t seat adjust ments can be made to achie ve a comfortab le driving positio n: • Height 3 •L e g r o o m • Bac krest rake ang .
19 Safety Legroom adjustme nt Lift the lev er under the front of th e seat and slide th e seat to the desi red position . Backrest rake angle To find the most com fortable po sition, t urn the knob to prov ide stepless adj ustment of the backr est. Lumbar support 3 Adjust the firmness of the lumbar supp ort by turning t he knob.
20 Safety Electr ically adjustabl e front seats 3 With the do ors clos ed the seat s can only be adjust ed when the igniti on is ON. However , there are two exception s: • T o f acilitate g etting in to the c ar , both s eats can be adjusted when eithe r of the fro nt doors is open.
21 Safety Backrest rake angl e Adjust th e rake an gle of the backrest wit h the rear l ever. Lumbar support 3 Adjust the firm ness of the lumbar suppor t by turning the knob.
22 Safety When the ignition is ON, al l seat setti ngs can be adjus ted. When the door is open and before the remote c ontrol has b een inser ted into the ignitio n switch , all s eat setting s can be adjus ted for up to 20 minutes. The mem ory also in cludes t he door m irror settings .
23 Safety Head rest raints Sport Sedan a nd sportCombi Head restra int, Convertib le, see page 76. The front seats are equipped w ith Saab Active Head Rest raints (SAHRs). The se are designe d to reduce the risk of neck injury if the car i s hit from b ehind.

35 Safety WARNIN G • Even if the ca r is equi pped with AIRBAGS, safety be lts must stil l alw ays be worn by all occupan ts. • Note that bec ause an airbag inflates and defl ates ext remely rapid ly, it will not pr ovide protec tion agai nst a second impact occurring in the sam e incide nt.
36 Safety Front passenger seat The system is the same as that us ed on the driver’s sid e. The airbag systems are inte rconnecte d and have a co mmon warn ing light . The pas- senger airbag modu le is ho used in t he fascia a bove the glove bo x and is ma rked "AIRBAG".
37 Safety Passenger Sensing System Vehicles with a pas senger s ensing sys tem have indi cator LEDs on the fac ia. The indi - cators will be li t durin g the sy stem check . When the sy stem ch eck is co mplete, e ither the ON or the OFF LED , will be lit.
38 Safety The passen ger sensi ng system is designed to turn off the right fro nt passenger’s frontal airbag if: • the righ t front passe nger seat is unoc cu- pied • the sy stem de ter min es t.
39 Safety The pass enger sens ing syste m is designe d to enabl e (may infla te) the righ t front passen ger’s frontal airb ag anytime the system senses t hat a perso n of adult si ze is sitting properly in th e right fron t passenger ’s seat.
40 Safety Head protecti on The pill ar trim an d headlin ing (not Co nverti- ble soft top ) are designe d to absorb ene rgy, softenin g possible blows to t he head. After a crash , these it ems mus t be cha nged in t he seat po sitions th at were occupied .
41 Safety The side-i mpact prot ection is o nly activate d on the s ide of im pact, whil e the saf ety belt preten sioners on both side s are deployed .
42 Safety Inflatable cur tains, Sport Sedan and SportCombi The inf latable curta ins, whic h protect the head, ar e conceale d along t he lengths of the headl ining (al l the way f rom front to rear roof pillars). The inflat able curtains infl ate at the same time as the side airb ags in the f ront seats i n case of a side-on impact.
43 Safety For optim al prot ecti on, do not s it to o clos e to the door. Bear this in mind, for example, if someon e is sleepi ng in the car. The inflat- able cu rtain com es down fro m the headl in- ing and covers a large por tion of the side windows .
44 Safety In many c rashes se vere enough to in flate an airbag, w indshield s are brok en by vehi cle deformati on. Additiona l windshi eld break - age may also occur fr om the right fro nt pas- senger a irbag. • Ai rbags are de signed to i nflate only once .
45 Safety Scrapping or worki ng on airbag and belt pret ensioners Frequently asked quest ions on function of t he airbag Do you still nee d to wear a safety b elt if air- bags ar e fitted? Yes, always! The airbag syst em compo- nents me rely supp lement the c ar’s norm al safety s ystem.
46 Safety When do the airbag s in the steering w heel and pas senger si de of the dash board inflat e? The air bag will only be inflated under certain predeterm ined condit ions in a moderate to sever.
47 Safety Are the du st and fum es given o ff when the airbag op erates at all harmful? Most pe ople who h ave rema ined in a car with li ttle or no ventilat ion for se veral mi n- utes co mplained only of minor irritation of the throat and eyes. Avoid as muc h as pos- sible g etting dust o n your s kin as there is a risk of skin irritati on.

53 Securit y Locking a car wit h dead battery The stee ring wheel lock req uires suf ficient batter y voltage to loc k and unlock. If th e bat- tery vol tage drops below a c ertain le vel while the remote c ontrol is in the igniti on swit ch, you wi ll not be able t o remove the remote c ontrol.
54 Security Switches on front door s The cent ral lock ing can a lso be opera ted from ins ide the car using the button by each front door handle. Lockin g the ca r with t he remote c ontrol ren - ders these but tons inoperat ive.
55 Securit y Trunk Release Handle There is a glow-in-th e-dark trun k release handle l ocated in side the trunk on t he latch. This ha ndle will glow fol lowing expos ure to light. Pul l the rele ase hand le down to open the trunk from inside. Reprogramming lock syst em functions Certain lock s ystem funct ions can be reprog rammed.
56 Security Changing the key bat tery When the voltage of the rem ote contro l bat- tery dr ops belo w a certain level, the Saab Inform ation Disp lay (SI D) will d isplay: Change the batte ry as soon a s possi ble to avoid m alfuncti oning.
57 Securit y 3 Change the ba tter y . Fit the new batte r y so that i t is pos itioned in th e same w a y as the o ld battery , with t he positiv e (+) side fa cing do wn. 4 Fit the two halv es of the re mote con trol together a nd press the m togethe r until you hear se v eral c licks .
58 Security If, when inserted into the ignition switch, there is a problem checking the elec tronic code of the remote c ontrol, the following messag e will app ear on the SID : Visit a Sa ab deale r to have the proble m checke d and rec tified. Car al arm The car al arm is a rmed whe n the car is locked wi th the rem ote contro l.
59 Securit y To avoid any inco nvenience, m ake sure that anyone using the car is fam iliar with how the car alarm and the loc king sys tem work. If the al arm has b een tripped s ince the car was la .

80 9-3 Co nvertible Calibrati ng front electri c windows with pinch pro tection 3 The win dow lifts should be calibrat ed if auto- matic c losing does not work or if the battery has bee n discon nected. T he pinch pro tec- tion wi ll not work i f the window s are not calibrat ed.

84 Instru ments an d controls Warning and indicator lights The wa rnings an d indication s that ca n be shown depend on th e engine variant a nd equipme nt level.
85 Instruments and controls This ligh t will come on if the engine oil pres- sure is to o low. If the warni ng light fla shes or comes on while you are drivin g, stop imme - diately in a s afe place, switch off the en gine and che ck the oil l evel (se e page 219).
86 Instru ments an d controls This li ght show s when the high be am is on (see page 103). This l ight indi cates wh en the fron t fog li ghts are on (s ee page 104). The front fog lights are switche d off auto- matical ly when th e engine is switched off.
87 Instruments and controls This li ght remind s the driver to buckl e up. This lig ht comes on when the p arking bra ke is appl ied (see page 187). The park ing brake is mechan ical and op er- ates on the rear wheels. This ligh t comes on if a pote ntially seri ous fault has occu rred in the airbag syst em.

89 Instruments and controls Odometer and trip meter The odom eter recor ds the di stance trav- elle d in miles on U.S. vehi cles an d on Can a- dian ve hicles t he distan ce indic ated is in kilome tres, and the trip meter in miles and tenths (k ilometres a nd tenths of kilom etres on Can adian ve hicles).
90 Instru ments an d controls Temperature gauge The tempera ture gauge show s the temper- ature of the coo lant. The needle shou ld be in the m iddle of the scal e when the engine is at no rmal opera ting tem perature.
91 Instruments and controls If the needl e repeatedly enters the red zone and t he engine at the same time lo ses power, bec ause the monitorin g system is limitin g the boos t pressu re, you s hould contact a Saab de aler as s oon as poss ible.

95 Instruments and controls When the en gine is sta rted, the func tion that was s elected wh en the en gine was switched off is displayed, with the followin g excepti ons: • Te m p is displ ay ed if t he outside tempera- ture is between 2 6 and 38°F (–3 and +3°C).

97 Instruments and controls Calculating the requis ite average speed (What ave rage spee d do I need to maintain to get to my dest ination i n time?) This fun ction sh ould be use d before starti ng out a jo urney. To calcula te the requisite average speed , the dist ance mus t first be given.
