6 Section 1: Getti ng Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by configuring your hardware, setting up accounts, and setting up your voice mail. Before using your device for the fi rst time, you’ll need to install and charge the batter y and install the micr o SIM card.

Getting Started 9 1. Carefully slide the microSIM card under the bottom metal pla te into the SIM card socket (as show n) until the card locks into place. • Make sure that the card’ s gold contacts fa ce into the phone and tha t the upper-left angled cor ner of the card is positioned as shown.
10 Installing the Back Co v er 1. Place the batter y cover onto the back of the phone (1) and press down (2). 2. Press along the edge of the back cover (3) until you have a secure seal. Note: Make sure the batter y is properly installed before switching on the phone.
Getting Started 11 Using the T rav el Charger Note: Verify that the batt ery is installed prior to connecting the wall charger . If both the wall charger is connected and the battery is not ins talled, the handset will po wer c ycle continuously and prevent proper operation.
12 Low Ba tter y Indicator When the battery is weak and only a few minutes of talk time remain, the battery icon ( ) blinks and the device sounds a warning tone at regular int ervals. In this condition, your phone conserves its remaining battery power , not by turning off the backlight, b ut by entering the dimming mode.

Note: If you are visually impaired or have difficulty hearing, tap Accessibilit y to configure the accessibility settings.

26 Google Search Bar The Google Search Bar provide s you an on-screen Internet search engine powered by G oogle™. 1. From the main Home screen, swipe the screen to the left to bring up the next Home screen. 2. T ap the Google Search bar . 3. Use the on-screen keypad to enter the item you want to search for , then tap .
Understanding Y our Phone 27 Tilt T o activate the tilt feature, press and hold two points on the screen then tilt the device back and forth to reduce or enlarge the screen. Use tilt to: • Reduce or enlarge the screen in the Gallery or Browser . Tur n over T u rn yo ur ph on e o ve r s o t ha t the screen faces downward.
28 Gyroscope Calibration Calibrate your device by using the built-in gyroscope. 1. From the main Settings page, tap My dev ice tab ➔ Motions and gestures ➔ Gyroscope cal ibration . 2. Place the device on a level surface and tap Calibrate . The device adj usts the level of the accelerometer .

Drag the ic on over the Remove icon and release it. As you place the shortcut in to the T rash, both items turn red.

40 Clearing Notifications T o c lea r al l notifications from the Notif ication panel: 1. From the Home screen, touch and hold the Notification Bar until the pull-down displays, then dra g down vertically . 2. Ta p t h e Clear button. The notifications are clear ed and the panel closes.

This secure digital card enables you to exchange ima ges, music, and data between SD-compatible devices. This section addresses the features and options of your de vice’ s SD functionality.

44 Using the Samsung K eyboar d Entering T ext Using the Samsung K eyboard This QWERTY keyboard can be used to enter text in either a Portrait or landscape orienta tion. The only difference between the two orientations are the sizes of the keys. From a screen where you can enter text, rotate your phone counterclockwise to a Landscape ori entation.

All follo wing letters will be uppercase until you tap the shift key again. Using Symbol/Numeric Mode Use Symbol/Numeric Mode to add numbers, symbol s, or emoticons.
46 Enterin g T ext Using Handwriting Y ou can enter text simply by using your finger to handwrite letters on your screen. 1. Press and hold ( Input Methods ) on the keyboard, then tap . 2. Use your finger tip to write out each character . Y ou can print or use cursive.
Understanding Y our Phone 47 Using Swype Entering T ext Using Swype Swype™ is a text input method that allows you to enter a word by sliding your finger or stylu s from letter to letter , lifting yo ur finger between word s. Swype uses error correcting a lgorithms and a langua ge model to predict th e next word.
48 Swype T ext Entr y Tips Y ou can access the SwypeTips application and watch a video or tutorial on using Swype. Y ou can also use the following Swype text entry tips. • Create a squig gle (like an S shape) to create a double letter (such as pp in apple).

52 Dialing Options From the Home scr een and Application menus, you have the option to access the Dialer and initiate a call by tapping ( Phone ) ➔ Keypad . From the Dialer and the Contacts screen, the following tabs are loca ted at the top of your screen: • Keypad : dials the current numb er entered using the on-screen keypad .

A wait req uires that any consecutive numbers be manually sent by tapping Ye s . • One-handed operation on/off to enable or disable th e resize and reposition the keypa d/dialer for either left (off) or right handed operation (o n).

58 Sending a Message to a R ecent Call 1. From the Home screen, tap ( Phone ) ➔ ( Logs tab). A list of recent ca lls is displayed. 2. Swipe the entry you want to message to the left. 3. At the Message screen, ta p the empty text field and use the on-screen keypad to type in a message.

62 Switching Betw een Calls When you have an active call and a call on hold, you may switch between the two calls, changing the one on hol d to active and placing the other on hold.
Call Functions 63 3-Way Calling (Multi-Par ty Calling) The 3-Way or Multi-Party feature allows you to ans wer a series of incoming call s and place them on hold. If this service is s upported by the network, all calls can be joined together . Y ou a re notified of an incoming call by a call waiti ng tone.
64 Switching off the Microphone (Mute) Y ou can temporarily switch your phone’ s micr ophone off, so that the other person cannot hear y ou. Example: Y ou wish to say something to person in the room, but do not wan t the person on the phone t o hear you.

Contacts and Y our Address Book 67 Adding a New Contact The default storage location for saving phone numbers to your Contacts List is your device’ s built-in mem ory . If existing Google and Corpor ate email accounts have been synchronized to your phone, these will be ma de available to your device during the creati on of new entries.

74 4. T o synchronize only Contacts, toggle the active state of the Sync Contacts field. A green check mark indica tes the feature is enabled. Note: The process of updating you r Contacts tab can take several minutes. If after 10-20 minutes, your list has not been updated, repeat step 2-3.
Contacts and Y our Address Book 75 • Accounts : allows you to add a nd manage mobile accounts on Samsung account, ChatON, Dropbox, Go ogle, LDAP , or Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. This option also allows you to manually synchronize all of your current contacts with their respective accounts.
76 • Mark as de fault : when you have multiple con tacts linked together , you ca n mark one of them as default (only displays when contact is saved to the phone).

From the main Messaging menu (before composing a message), press ( Menu ) to reveal additional messaging options: •S e a r c h : allows you to sea rch through all of your messages for a certain word or string of w ords.
84 • Add to Contacts : allows you to add the re cipient to your Contacts list. This option on l y appe ars if the recipient is not already in your Con tacts list. •V i e w c o n t a c t : allows you to see inform ation on the recipient. This option only appears if th e recipient is in your Contacts list.
Messaging 85 Adding attachments to a message T o ad d an attachment to you r message, tap and select one of th e following op tions: • Image : allows you to tap an existi ng image from your Gallery or Samsung Li nk and add it to your message.

Viewing New Receiv ed Messages 1. When you receive a new message, the new mess age icon will appear a t the top of your screen.

88 Messa ge Search Y ou can search t hrough your messages by using the Message Search feature. 1. From the main Home screen, tap ( Messaging ) . 2. Ta p ( Menu ) ➔ Search . 3. Use the on-screen keypad to enter a word or phrase to search for , then ta p .

90 • Preview message : when enabled, a llows you to view a brief preview of new m essage text on the Status bar . Emergency message sett ings • Emergency alerts : allows you to configure emergency alert settings. Y ou can enable/dis able those alert categories you wish to receive.

94 Using Email Email enables you to review and crea te email using various email services . Y ou can also receive text messa ge alerts when you receive an important email. There are currently two main types of email accounts on your phone: Gmail, Internet-based email (Gmail, Y ahoo, etc.

96 Section 6: Pictures and Videos This section explains fea tures related to the use of the camera and camcorder on your phone. Y ou can take photographs and shoot video by using th e built-in camera functionality . Y our 8 megapixel camera produces photos in JPEG format.
