Getting star ted 9 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 11 • The items supplied with the devic e and any a vailable accessories ma y var y depending on the region or service provider . • The supplied items ar e designed only for this device and may not be c ompatible with other devices.
Getting star ted 12 2 Inser t the SIM or USIM card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards. • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna. • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot.
Getting star ted 13 5 Replace the back cov er . Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 14 Char ging the ba tter y Charge the batt er y befor e using it for the first time . Use the charger to charge the batt er y . A computer can be also used t o charge the device b y connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 15 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 16 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • Activate po wer-sa ving mode.
Getting star ted 17 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Replace the back cov er . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 18 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 19 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
Getting star ted 20 S witching to silent mode Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Pr ess and hold the Volume butt on down until it switches to silent mode . • Pr ess and hold the Po wer button, and then tap Mute . • Open the notifications panel at the top of the scr een, and then tap Sound .
21 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 22 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers or the S P en to use the touch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion.
Basics 23 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Rotating the screen Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation.
Basics 26 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 27 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 28 Double -tapping Double -tap the device to mov e to the top of a list of c ontacts or emails. Rotating While the screen is locked , tap and hold the screen, and then rotate the devic e to landscape orientation to launch the camera.
Basics 29 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio . Shaking • Shake the device to sear ch for Bluetooth devices . • Shake the device to updat e the list of emails or information from Y ahoo News, Y ahoo F inance, or Ac cuWea ther .
Basics 30 Sw eeping Sw eep your hand across the scr een to capture a screenshot. The image is sav ed in Galler y → Screenshots . It is not possible to capture a screenshot while using some applications . C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback .
Basics 31 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. Moving When the touch scr een is turned off , move your hand acr oss the Pro ximit y/Light sensor to turn on the screen and view the number of missed calls and new messages, the ba tter y power lev el, and more .
Basics 32 P age Buddy Use this f eature t o use specific applications based on your actions. P ages related t o your actions appear in the following conditions: • When you pull out the S P en from the slot. • When you c onnect a headset or dock to the device.
Basics 33 U sing the S P en The included S P en can be used to easily select items or per form func tions. A c tions using the S P en with the button pressed pro vide additional conv eniences, such as screen captur e. Pull out the S P en from the slot to use it .
Basics 34 Opening a menu With the S P en button pr essed, dra w to open a list of the screen ’ s available options . Undoing the last ac tion With the S P en button pr essed, dra w to undo the last action.
Basics 35 Capturing scr eenshots With the S P en button pr essed, touch the scr een until you hear a click. A screenshot is saved in the Galler y → Screenshots folder . It is possible to draw or write on or to cr op a screenshot. The edited image is sav ed in the Galler y → IMG_edited folder .
Basics 36 Selec ting text With the S P en button pr essed, drag left or right on the text to select. If you drag between lines, y ou may select unwant ed tex t. T o select only the tex t you int end, drag across the middle of the text or drag the text selection icons.
Basics 37 Selec ting and capturing an image With the S P en button pr essed, dra w a line around an ar ea to select it. The selected area is sav ed in the Galler y → Screenshots folder . Select an application to use with the selected area fr om the icons that appear at the bott om of the screen.
Basics 38 S P en Keeper When the touch scr een is off and S P en is removed fr om the device, the device display s a pop - up aler t and emits a sound if you walk.
Basics 39 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 40 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 41 Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen. When the rubbish bin turns red, release it . Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 42 U sing widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 43 Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance . Pr ess and hold the Home button, tap , and then tap End next to an application to close it. T o close all running applications , tap End all .
Basics 44 Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled .
Basics 45 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 46 Changing language ke yboards Slide the space key left or right to change language keyboards . Handwriting T ap , and then write a w ord with a finger or the S P en. Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered. Select a suggested wor d.
Basics 47 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 117) T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 48 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 49 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware.
Basics 50 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 51 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a secondar y unlock PIN. Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → PIN .

53 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 54 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sign appears.
Communication 55 • → Noise reduction off : Deactivate the noise reduction featur e that remo ves background noise so tha t the other par ty can hear you more clearly . • → My call sound : Selec t an equaliser option f or use during a call.
Communication 56 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the cir cle, or pr ess and hold the headset button. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, tap Rejec t call with message . T o create the rejection message, tap → Call settings → Set reject messages .
Communication 57 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch Camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 58 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images . C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen.
Communication 59 Editing a con tac t Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap → Delete . Setting a speed dial number T ap → Speed dial setting , select a speed dial number , and then select a contact for it. T o remov e a speed dial number , tap and hold it, and then tap Remov e .
Communication 60 Syncing with Samsung C ontac ts T ap → Merge with Samsung . Contacts synced with Samsung Con tacts appear with in the contacts list. If a contact is added or deleted on the device, it is also added to or delet ed from Samsung Contacts, and vic e versa.
Communication 61 C ontac t groups Adding c ontac ts to a gr oup Selec t a gr oup , and then tap . Selec t contacts to add, and then tap Done . Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Create : Make a new group . • Search : Search for c ontac ts.
Communication 62 Messaging Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messaging on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 63 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 64 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 65 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 66 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 67 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.

W eb & network 70 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 71 Bluetooth Bluetooth crea tes a direct wireless c onnection bet ween two devices o ver shor t distances. Media 77 Setting a song as ringtone T o use the curren tly-playing song as ringtone , tap → Set as → Phone ringtone . Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap Playlists , and then tap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK .
Media 78 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview scr een where the camera should focus . When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap to take the photo . T ap and hold to take a series of photos. Indicates which storage is in use .
Media 79 • Sunset : Use this setting f or richer colours and sharper contrasts . • Dawn : Use this setting f or very subtle colours. • Autumn c olour : Use this setting f or red-shifted backgr ound scener y . • Te x t : Use this setting f or books or posters.
Media 80 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap → Shooting mode → P anorama . T ap and move the camer a in any direction. When the blue frame aligns with the viewfinder , the camera automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 81 Recor ding mode Switch between the front and r ear camera. Change the ash setting. Change recor ding mode. Select among various eects that are av ailable. Change the camera settings. Indicates which storage is in use . Switch between still and video mode.
Media 82 Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. • The zoom function may not be av ailable when shooting at the highest resolution.
Media 83 • White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range. The settings are desig ned for specific lighting situa tions. These settings are similar to the heat range f or white -balance exposure in pr ofessional cameras .
Media 84 • V ideo qualit y : Set the quality level for videos . • Stor age : Selec t the memor y location f or storage . • Reset : Reset the camera settings. Shor tcuts Reorganise shor tcuts f or easy access to the camera ’ s various options .
Media 85 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods to z oom in an image: • Double -tap anywhere to zoom in. • Spread two fingers apart on any place to z oom in. Pinch t o zoom out, or double -tap to return. V iewing images using the motion featur e Use the motion f eature t o execut e a function with par ticular motion.
Media 86 • Print : Print via a USB or Wi-F i connection. The device is only compatible with some Samsung printers. • Rename : Rename the file. • Scan for nearby devic es : Search for devic es that have media sharing activated. • Details : View image details .
Media 87 T agging fac es When viewing an image, tap → F ace tag → On . A yellow fr ame appears around the recog nised face. T ap the face , tap Add name , and then select or add a contact. When the face tag appears on an image , tap the face tag and use available options, such as making calls or sending messages.
Media 88 V ideo Pla yer Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo Player on the Applications screen. • A void locking the device ’ s screen while playing a DivX Video- On-Demand. Each time you lock the scr een while playing a DivX V ideo- On-Demand, one of your available r ental counts is lost.
Media 89 Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop-up player . Spread two fingers apart on the screen to enlarge the pla yer or pinch to r educe it.
Media 90 Sharing videos Selec t the video to view , tap , and then selec t a sharing method. Uploading videos Selec t your ac count, tap , selec t a video , enter information f or the video , and then tap Upload . F M R adio Listen to music and new s on the FM r adio .

Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 103 Changing calendar type T ap , and then select one from among differ ent types of calendars including year , month, week, and others. A pinch gesture can be used t o change calendar t ype.
