Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables. Unappr oved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the device.
Getting star ted 11 Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty . • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery .
Getting star ted 12 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 13 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Close the cov er of the memor y card slot. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 14 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Delete all .
Getting star ted 15 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
16 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 17 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 18 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 19 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 20 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → P alm motion , and then drag the P alm motion switch to the right.
Basics 21 Sw eeping Sw eep your hand across the scr een to capture a screenshot. The image is sav ed in Galler y → Screenshots . It is not possible to capture a screenshot while using some applications . C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback .
Basics 22 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 23 2 T ap and hold an application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to the scr een. Release the application icon when the screen turns blue . 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 24 Sharing con tent betw een applications Y ou can easily share content between applica tions, such as Email and Internet , by dragg ing and dropping them. Some applications may not suppor t this f eature . 1 Launch Email and Internet in a split screen Multi W indow .

Basics 27 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 28 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel Pinch on the scr een and tap . Moving a panel Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen.
Basics 29 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 30 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to Crea te folder . Enter a f older name and then tap OK . Put applica tions into the new f older by dragg ing, and then tap S ave to sav e the ar rangement.
Basics 31 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it . Some applications are gr ouped into folders .
Basics 32 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 33 Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards . Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered.
Basics 34 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less te xt, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, plac e the cursor at the point where it should be inserted, and then tap → P aste .
Basics 35 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 36 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices .
Basics 37 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 38 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
39 C ommunication C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information.
Communication 40 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the left side of the contacts list for quick scr olling, by dragging a finger along it.
Communication 41 Impor ting and expor ting contacts T ap Con tacts . Impor ting contacts T ap → Settings → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an impor t option. Expor ting contacts T ap → Settings → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an expor t option.

If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card, and then tap to edit.
Communication 44 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 45 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. Communication 46 Reading messages Pr eview attachment. Delete the message. Keep the message for long-term storage . Reply to the message. Mark the message as unread. Move the message to another mailbox. Reply to all recipients or print the message. F or ward the message to others.
Communication 47 Hangouts Use this application to cha t with others. T ap Hangouts on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . Selec t a friend from the friends list or enter da ta to search and select a friend from the r esults to star t chatting .

49 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to acc ess additional options while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 50 Histor y T ap → Book marks → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages . T o clear the hist or y , tap . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Book marks → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 51 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap → S ave . T o open a bookmarked webpage, tap → Book marks , and then select one. Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a key wor d, and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear .
W eb & network 52 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
53 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. Pla ying music Selec t a music category , and then selec t a song to play . T ap the album image at the bottom of the scr een to open the music player scr een.
Media 54 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Play er → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 55 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 60) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 56 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 57 Applying filter eff ec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. The available options v ar y by mode . T ak ing videos T ak ing a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap to take a video .
Media 58 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 59 C onfiguring settings for Camer a T ap to configur e settings for Camera. Not all of the f ollowing options are available in both still camera and video camera modes . The av ailable options var y depending on the mode used. • Photo size / V ideo size : Selec t a resolution.

Media 61 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods to z oom in an image: • Double -tap anywhere to zoom in. • Spread two fingers apart on any place to z oom in. Pinch t o zoom out, or double -tap to return. Pla ying videos Video files sho w the icon on the preview .
Media 62 • Print : Print the image b y connec ting the device to a print er . Some pr inters ma y not be compatible with the device . • Rename : Rename the file. • Buddy photo share : Send the image to a person whose face is tagged in the image .
Media 63 Setting as wallpaper When viewing an image, tap → Set as to set the image as wallpaper or to assig n it to a contact. T agging fac es When viewing an image, tap → Settings → T ags , and then tick F ace tag . A yellow fr ame appears around the r ecognised face .
Media 64 V ideo Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo on the Applications screen. Pla ying videos Selec t a video to pla y . Move the con trol panel to the left. Open the playlist. Move f or wards or backwards by dragging the bar . Search for other devices to play the file .
Media 65 Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select videos, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop-up player .

Utilities 70 Bro wsing memos Brow se memo thumbnails by scrolling up or down. T o sear ch for a memo , tap . T o send a memo to others , tap → Selec t , select a memo, and then tap . T o print memos by c onnec ting the device to a printer , tap → Selec t , select memos, and then tap .
Utilities 71 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 72 Changing calendar type T ap the top left of the screen, and then select one from among diff erent types of calendars including year , month, week, and others. Searching f or ev ents or tasks T ap , and then ent er a keyword to sear ch for .

Utilities 74 Driv e Use this application to cr eate and edit documents and share them with others via Google Drive storage . When you creat e documents or upload files to Google Drive, your devic e automatically syncs with the w eb ser ver and an y other computer with Google Drive installed .

Settings 86 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available . On the Settings screen, tap Connections → Wi - Fi → → Adv anced and tick Network notification to activate this f eature .
Settings 87 Data usage Keep track of your da ta usage amount. • Data usage cycle : Enter monthly r eset date to monitor your da ta usage. T o use mor e options, tap . • Aut o sync data : Activate or deactivate aut o-syncing of applications. Y ou can select what information t o sync for each acc ount in Settings → General → Ac counts .

Settings 89 Display Change the settings for the displa y . • Brightness : Set the brightness of the display . • Screen timeout : Set the length of time the device waits befor e turning off the display ’ s backlight. • Day dream : Set the device to launch a screensa ver when your device is connected to a desktop dock or charg ing.
Settings 90 • P ersonal message : Set the device to show a personal message on the locked scr een. – Edit personal message : Edit the personal message. • Owner information : Enter y our information that is sho wn with the clock . • Unlock effect : Selec t an eff ect when you unlock the screen.

Settings 95 • Check missed ev ents : Set the device to check missed messages or even ts when S V oice is launched by pressing the headset butt on. • Home address : Enter y our home address to use loca tion information with the v oice command f eature .
Settings 96 P alm motion Activate the palm motion f eature to contr ol the device by touching the screen. • Captur e screen : Set the device to capture an image of the scr een when you sweep your hand to the left or right across the screen. • Mute/P ause : Set the device to pause media playback when y ou touch the screen with your palm.
Settings 97 Date and time Ac cess and alter the f ollowing settings to control ho w the device displays the time and date . If the batter y remains fully discharged or r emoved from the devic e, the time and dat e is reset. • Set date : Set the current date manually .
Settings 98 P ow er saving mode Activate po wer-sa ving mode and change the settings for power -saving mode. • CPU per formance : Set the device to limit some syst em resourc e usage. • Screen output : Set the device to decrease the brightness of the displa y .

T roubleshooting 101 The t ouch screen r esponds slowly or improperly • If you attach a prot ective cov er or optional accessories to the t ouch screen, the touch screen ma y not function properly .
T roubleshooting 102 Sound echoes during a call Adjust the v olume by pressing the V olume button or move t o another area. A cellular netw ork or the Internet is often disconnected or audio quality is poor • Ensure that y ou are not block ing the device ’ s internal ant enna.
T roubleshooting 103 Y our device is hot t o the touch When you use applica tions that requir e more power or use applications on y our device for an extended period of time, your devic e may f eel hot to the touch. This is normal and should not affect your device ’ s lif espan or per formanc e.
