Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables. Unappr oved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the device.
Getting star ted 11 Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty . • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery .
Getting star ted 12 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device pro vides options that help you save ba tter y pow er . By customizing these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 13 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards. 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Close the cov er of the memor y card slot. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 14 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 15 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
16 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 17 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 18 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item for more than 2 sec onds to access available options . Dragging T o move an ic on, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 19 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 20 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → P alm motion , and then drag the P alm motion switch to the right.
Basics 21 Sw eeping Sw eep your hand across the scr een to capture a screenshot. The image is saved in Galler y → Screenshots . It is not possible to capture a screenshot while using some applications . C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback .
Basics 22 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 23 2 T ap and hold an application icon on the Multi Window tr ay , and then drag it to the screen. Release the application icon when the screen turns blue . 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tr ay , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 24 Sharing con tent betw een applications Y ou can easily share con tent between applications , such as Email and Internet , by dragg ing and dropping them. Some applications may not suppor t this f eature . 1 Launch Email and Internet in a split screen Multi Window .

Basics 26 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more . Drag down from the status bar t o open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 27 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e’ s fea tures . It displays indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scroll left or right.
Basics 28 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel Pinch on the scr een and tap . Moving a panel Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the trash can at the t op of the screen.
Basics 29 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home screen. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .

Basics 32 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages. T o enter text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 33 Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards . Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered.
Basics 34 C opying and pasting T ap and hold over text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard . T o paste it into a te xt entr y field, tap and hold at the point where it should be inserted, and then tap P aste .
Basics 35 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 36 Setting up user profiles Set up user profiles and then select one when unlock ing the device to use personalized settings. By setting up multiple user profiles , several users can share the devic e without affecting others’ personal settings, such as email acc ounts, wallpaper pref erences, and mor e.
Basics 37 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices . Download the latest Samsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 38 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlock ing it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 39 Unlock ing the devic e T urn on the screen by pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .

Communication 45 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 46 Gmail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. Communication 47 Reading messages Pr eview attachment. Delete the message. Keep the message for long-term storage . Reply to the message. Mark the message as unread. Move the message to another mailbox. Reply to all recipients or print the message. F or ward the message to others.
Communication 48 Hangouts Use this application to cha t with others. T ap Hangouts on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . W eb & network 51 Histor y T ap → Book marks → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages . T o clear the histor y , tap . Sav ed pages T o view saved w ebpages, tap → Book marks → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage to open it in a new page, sa ve, or cop y .
W eb & network 52 Book marks T o book mark the current w ebpage, tap → S ave . T o open a book marked webpage , tap → Book marks , and then select one. Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a keywor d, and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear .
W eb & network 53 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
54 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 55 T o listen to songs at equal v olume levels, tap → Settings → Play er → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 56 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 61 ) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 57 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 58 Applying filter eff ec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. The available options v ar y by mode . T ak ing videos T aking a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap to take a video .
Media 59 T ap → to change the recor ding mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for email : Use this mode to lo wer the r ecording quality for sending smaller files via email. Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .
Media 60 C onfiguring settings for Camer a T ap to configure settings f or Camera. Not all of the follo wing options are av ailable in both still camera and video camera modes . The available options var y depending on the mode used. • Photo size / V ideo size : Selec t a resolution.

Media 62 V iewing images Launching Galler y displays a vailable folders. When another application, such as Email , sav es an image, the Download folder is aut omatically creat ed to contain the image. Likewise , capturing a screenshot automatically cr eates the Screenshots folder .
Media 63 • Print : Print the image b y connec ting the device to a print er . Some printers may not be compatible with the device . • Rename : Rename the file. • Buddy photo share : Send the image to a person whose face is tagged in the image . • Rotate left : Rotate count erclock wise.
Media 64 Setting as wallpaper When viewing an image, tap → Set as to set the image as wallpaper or to assig n it to a contact. T agging faces When viewing an image, tap → Settings → T ags , and then tick F ace tag . A yellow fr ame appears around the r ecogniz ed face.

Utilities 71 Bro wsing memos Brow se memo thumbnails by scrolling up or down. T o search f or a memo , tap . T o send a memo to others, tap → Selec t , select a memo, and then tap . T o print memos by connecting the device to a printer , tap → Selec t , select memos, and then tap .
Utilities 72 T o add an event or task mor e briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 73 Syncing with Google C alendar On the Applications screen, tap Settings → General → Ac counts → Google under MY A C COUNT S , select the G oogle acc ount, and then tick Sync C alendar . T o manually sync for updating , on the Applications screen, tap S Planner → → Sync .
Utilities 74 Sign in to y our Dropbox acc ount. If you do not hav e it, create a Dropbo x account. Once Dropbo x is ac tivated , tap T urn on Camera Upload to upload photos and videos taken with the device ’ s camera to Dropbo x automatically . T o view the uploaded photos or videos, tap .

Settings 87 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i net works and display an ic on on the status bar to notify when available . On the Settings screen, tap Connections → Wi - Fi → → Adv anced and tick Network notification to activate this f eature .

Settings 96 P alm motion Activate the palm motion f eature to contr ol the device by touching the screen. • Captur e screen : Set the device to capture an image of the scr een when you sweep your hand to the left or right across the screen. • Mute/P ause : Set the device to pause media playback when y ou touch the screen with your palm.
Settings 97 Date and time Ac cess and alter the f ollowing settings to control ho w the device displays the time and date . If the batter y remains fully discharged or r emoved from the devic e, the time and dat e is reset. • Set date : Set the current date manually .

T roubleshooting 102 If the problem is still not resolv ed, con tact a Samsung S er vice Cen tre . Signals are being dr opped When you ar e in areas with weak signals or poor r eception, you may lose your c onnec tion to the network. M ov e to another area and try again.
T roubleshooting 103 Y our de vice is hot to the touch When you use applica tions that requir e more power or use applications on y our device for an extended period of time, your devic e may f eel hot to the touch. This is normal and should not affect your device ’ s lifespan or per f ormance.
