Getting Started 6 Special T ext In this manual, you’ll find text that is s et apart from the rest . These are intended to point ou t important info rmation, share quick methods for activati ng fe atures, to define terms, and more.
7 SIM Card Y our device uses a 4G L TE SIM (Subscriber Identity Module). The 4G L TE SIM is a small, re ctangular plastic card th at stores your device number , in formation about your w ireless service, and may contain ot her information such as messages an d contacts.
Getting Started 8 Batt er y Y our device is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y . A Charging Head and USB cable are included with the device, for charging the batter y . Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the ba ttery before usin g your device for the first time.
9 T ur ning Y our Device On and Off T ur ning Y our Device On Press and hold the Powe r / Lock Key . While powering on, the device connects with the network, then displays the Home screen and active alerts. T ur ning Y our Device Off 1. Press and hold the Pow e r / Lock Key .
Getting Started 10 Y our Google Account Y our new device uses your G oogle account to fully utilize its Android features, incl uding Gmai l, Google T alk, and Google Play Store. When you turn on your device for the first time, follow the prompts to set up a connection with your existing Google account, or create a new Google account.
11 Securing Y our Device Use your device’ s screen lock fe atures to secure your device. Note: Unless stated otherwise, inst ructions in this User Manual start with the device unlocked, at the Home s creen. For lock screen options, use the Configure lock screen setting under Location and security sett ings, at Apps ➔ Settings ➔ Security .

17 Extended Home Screen The Home screen con sists of the Home page, plus pages that extend beyond the display width to provide more space for adding shortcuts, widgets and fo lders. Slide your finger horizontally across the screen to scrol l to the left or right side pages.

19 Action Bar The Action bar displays at the top of the screen, and upda tes automatically to provide acce ss to items re lated to the current appl ication or sc reen. Google Search Bar W idget T ouch to enter criteria to search the web. T ouch to speak your criteria.
Understanding Y our Device 20 Mini App Tray The Mini App T ray contains shor tcuts for a pps tha t you might need while working in other a pps, such as Alarm, Calcula tor , Calendar , Email, etc. 1. T ouch Open on the System bar to access the Mini App T ray .
21 Quick Settings Quick Settings and Notification s display the current date and time, network and battery status, Wi-Fi st atus and notifica tions. T ouch Sta tus at th e top of the screen to display Quick Settings. T ouch items to open them, or touch X to dismiss the notifica tion.
Understanding Y our Device 22 New Gmail Messag e : Y ou have new Gmail. T ouch the icon for additional information. Configure input methods : When the keyboard is displayed, touch for a menu of quick keyboard settings. Bluetooth Active : Bluetooth is turned on.
23 W idgets Place widgets on the Home screen. Adding Widgets to the Home Screen 1. T ouch and hold on the H ome screen, then touch Apps and widgets . 2. T ouch the Widgets tab to display ava ilable widgets. Scroll by sliding your finger ri ght and left to view more widgets.
Understanding Y our Device 24 Wallpapers Choose a picture to display in the background of the Home screen and Lock screen. Y ou can choose fro m pre-loaded wallpapers, or select a picture you’ve taken with the Ca mera or downloaded. 1. T ouch and hold on the Ho me screen, then touch Set wallpaper .
25 Entering T e xt T ext Input Methods Y our device offers several text input methods: • Samsung keyboard : Enter text by touching keys on a virtual QWERTY keyboar d. • Google voice typing : Enter text by speaking. • Swype : Enter text by sliding yo ur fi nger or stylus from letter to letter , lifting your finger between words.
Understanding Y our Device 26 Entering T ext Using the Samsung K eyboard The Samsung keyboard is a custom virtual QWER TY keyboard. Input characters by tapping the on-screen keys with your finger , or use speech rec ognition.
27 Using Predictive T ext Y ou can enable predictive text to have the Samsung keyboard match your key touches to common w ords and insert them automatically, or display them for you to choose the correct word. T o enable predic tive text : To u c h Apps ➔ Settings ➔ Language and input , then touch Settings next to Samsung keyboard.
Understanding Y our Device 28 Using Swype Swype allows you to enter a wo rd by sliding your finger or stylus from letter to letter , lif tin g your finger be tween words. Swype uses error correcting algorithm s and a language model to predict the next wor d.
29 Copying or Cutting T ext 1. T ouch and hold on the text you want to select to display the selector cursors, then touch and drag the cursors to high light the text you wan t to cut or copy. 2. T ouch Cut or Copy from the Action bar . Pasting Copied or Cut T ext 1.
Understanding Y our Device 30 T ask Manager Y our device can run applicatio ns simultaneously , with some applications running in the ba ckgrou nd. Use T ask Manager to see which applications are running on your device, and to end running applications to extend battery life.
31 Section 3: Accounts and Conta cts Accounts Y our device provides the ability to synchronize infor mation from a variety of accounts, including Google, a Corporate Exchange server , and email acco unts. With synchronization, you can ensure that information on you r device is updated with any informa tion that changes in your accounts.
Accounts and Contac ts 32 Remo ving an Account Important! Removing an account also deletes all of it s messages, contacts and other da ta from the device. 1. From the Home s creen, tou ch Apps ➔ Settings , then scroll down to Accounts . 2. T ouch an account type (such as Email) to list your account (or accounts, if yo u have multiple accounts).
33 Contacts Creating Contacts 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts ➔ Add . 2. At the prompt, select an account for saving the contact (options depend on the acco unts you have set up, and whether a memor y card is installed). Y ou can also add a new account here.
Accounts and Contac ts 34 Marking Def ault Infor mation Y ou may have many different methods for contacting a contact, such as phone numbers, email ad dresses, and IM names. Y ou can set defaults, so that interactions with the contact automatically use one of the se methods.
35 My Profile My Profile contains your own contact information, displayed as ME in Contacts. Y ou can se nd My Profile to friends via Bluetooth, as an attachment in Email or Gmail, or to a Wi-Fi device via Wi-Fi Direct. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts .
Accounts and Contac ts 36 J oining Contacts Y our device can synchronize contacts with multiple accounts. When you synchronize contacts with your device, yo u may have multiple cont acts for one person. When you join contacts, all the contact’ s information displays in one contact record.
37 Impor ting and Expor ting Contacts T o back up and restore your contac t information, you can export your contact list to device memor y (USB storage) or a memory ca rd. Y ou can import contacts (previously exported) from device memory (USB stor age), a memor y card, or the SIM card.
Accounts and Contac ts 38 Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster . For more information about displaying contacts by group, see “Choosing Contacts to Display” on page 35. Creating a New Group 1. From the Home scre en, touch Apps ➔ Contacts .

Messaging 40 Section 4: Messaging This section describes ho w to send and receive messa ges, and other features as sociated with messaging. 41 Composing and Sending Email 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Email . 2. Select an account, then tou ch Compose . 3. T ouch fields to enter reci pients, a subject, and the email text. Y ou can also attach files, and set options f or Priority and T racking options.
Messaging 42 Gmail Send and receive emails using Gmail, Google’s web-based email. Setting Up Y our Gmail Account The first time you launch Gmail, your device will prompt you to set up your Google account if you haven’t already set it up. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Gmail .

T ouch Menu ➔ Vie w ty pe to choose an option: • Customi zable gri d : The default view , which allows you to touch and hold on app s to move them from screen to screen.
Applications 46 Alar m Set alarms for reminders, or for wake-up times. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Alarm . AllShare Play Use AllShare Play to share multimedia conte nt from your device with other DLNA (Digi tal Living Network Alliance) certified devices.
47 Amazon Kindle Amazon Kindle links you to more than o ne million eBooks available in the Kindle store. Enjo y personalized recommendations, customer reviews, and automatic syncing with other Kindle-capable devices you own . From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Amazon Kindle .

53 Email Send and receive email using popular em ail services. For more information, s ee “Email” on page 40. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Email . Galler y Use Gallery to view , capture, and manage pictures and videos. For more informati on, refer to “Galler y” on page 51.
Applications 54 Group Play Group Play is an easy way to share files in real time with others who are on the same Wi-Fi network. Group Play can be used when you want to sh are documents, images, m usic, and so on . 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Group Play .
55 Local Google Local uses your location to help you find nearby destinations, such as restaurant s, bars, hotels, attractions, A TMs and gas sta tions, or you can enter a loca tion. Note: Y ou must enable location s erv ices to this app, and some features require Standalone GPS or Google l ocation services.
Applications 56 Memo Create text notes, for updating your status, sharing with friends, or printing on a Samsung printer via Wi-Fi. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Memo . Messenger Google+ Messenger lets you chat and coordinate with any of your friends, all a t the same time.
57 My V erizon Mobile Use My Verizon Mobile to access self-ser ve functionality for managing your wireless account directly from your device. Note: Y ou can use My Verizon Mobile free of charge. Y ou will not incur any airtime or da ta charges when you use My Verizon Mobile in th e national Enhanced Service Area.

Connections 62 Section 6: Connection s Y our device inc l udes features to connect to the internet and to other devices. W i-Fi Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technolog y that provides access to local area networks , and to other Wi-Fi Direct devices.
63 Scanning and Connecting to a Wi-Fi Netw or k When you turn on Wi-Fi, your device searches for avai lable Wi-Fi connections, then displays them on screen. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings . Under Wireless and networks, touch Wi-Fi to turn this service on.
Connections 64 Configuring Wi-Fi Settings Set up and manage connect ions to Wi-Fi networks. 1. From the Home s creen, tou ch Apps ➔ Settings . Under Wireless and networks, touch Wi-Fi to turn this ser vice on. 2. T ouch Wi-Fi to display av ailable networks and options.
65 W i-Fi Direct Wi-Fi Direct is a standard that allo ws devices to connect to each other directly via Wi-Fi, without a Wi-Fi network or hotspot, and without having to set up the con nection.

67 Connecting a De vice via Mobile Hotspot Use the other device’ s Wi-Fi control to connect t o your device’ s Mobile Hotspo t. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings . Under Wireless and networks , touch More settings ➔ Mobile Hotspot .

69 Pairing w ith a Bluetooth De vice Search for a Bluetooth device an d pair with it, to exchange informatio n between your device an d the target device. After pairing, your device and th e target device will recognize eac h other and exchange informatio n without a passcode or PIN.
Connections 70 Bluetooth Profiles Bluetooth profiles are specifica tions for servi ces supported by individual devices. Profiles improve the abilit y of different devices to work together . Y o ur device supports these Bluetooth profiles: • Serial P ort : SPP allows a remote Bluetoo th device to act as a virtual seri al port.
71 Te t h e r i n g The tethering f eatures allow you to share your device’s mobile data network connection with other devices via USB or Bluetooth. T ouch Help under T ethering t o view information about tethering, and for links to more informa tion.
Connections 72 Nearby De vices Share files with nearby devices using DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standards, over Wi -Fi. T o share with nearby devices, you must conne ct to a Wi-Fi network. The device s you wish to share files with must a lso be connected to the same Wi-Fi network and must support DLNA.
73 Connecting to a Comp uter Y ou can use a USB cable to connect your device to a Windows computer , and transfer music, pictures, and other files between the computer and your device. This connection uses the MTP protocol, supported by most rece nt versions of Windows.
Settings 74 Section 7: Settings W ireless and Networ ks Control your device’ s wireless connections. Air plane Mode When Airplane mode is enabled, all your device’ s wir eless connections are disabled, a nd you cannot make or receive calls or messages or connect to networks.
75 Bluetooth Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communications technology for exchanging in fo rmation over a distance of about 30 feet. Y ou don’t need to line up the devices to send information with Bluetooth. If the devices are in range, you can exchange information between them , even if they are in different rooms.

83 Manage Applica tions Manage and remove applicat ions from your device. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings . Under Device , touch Application manager .
Settings 84 VZW Location S e r vices Enable or disable locatio n service from Verizon Wireless. Note: VZW location ser vices must be enabled to use some applications.
85 Google Location Ser vices Enable or disable use of lo cation ser vices provide d by Google. Important! By selecting Google loca tion services , you are allowing Google’s location service to collect anonymous location da ta. Some data may be stored on your device.

87 Owner Infor mation Enter text to display on the Lock screen. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings . Under Per s o na l , touch Lock screen ➔ Owner information . 2. T ouch Show owner i nfo on loc k screen to enable display of Owner information on the Lock screen.
Settings 88 Set Up SIM Card Loc k As a security measure, you can choose to lock the SI M card, and require a PIN to use the device. 1. From the Home s creen, tou ch Apps ➔ Settings .
89 T r usted Credentials Y ou can install credentials from an installed memor y card, and use the Credential storag e settings to allow a pplications to access the secure certifi cates and other crede ntials. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings .
Settings 90 Personal Dictionar y Manage your personal dictiona ry of words, used for word suggestions and correction. 1. From the Home s creen, tou ch Apps ➔ Settings . Under Per s o na l , touch Language and input ➔ Personal dictionar y . 2. Manage your word list : • Select Add to enter new words.
91 Samsung K eyboard Configure Samsung keypad settings. When you enable Samsung keyboard in Settings, it is available for text entr y when you touch a text field to enter text. For more information, se e “Entering T ext Using the Samsung Keyboard” on page 26.
Settings 92 •T 9 T r a c e : When this option is enable d, you can sweep yo ur finger over keypad letters to en ter words. When you lift your finger , a word matching your sweep is enter ed automatically . Available wh en Predictive text is turned On.
93 – Next word prediction : When enabl ed, Swype predicts th e next word based on the previous word. – Reset Swype’ s dictionary : Delete all the words you’ve ad ded to the Swype dicti onary . – Ver s io n : View information about Sw ype. • Language option s : Choose the current lan guage for Swype, and download new languages.
Settings 94 T ext-to-Speec h Output T ext-to-speech (TTS) provides audible readout of text, for example, the contents of text messa ges, and the Ca ller ID for incoming calls. 1. From the Home s creen, tou ch Apps ➔ Settings . Under Per s o na l , touch Language and input ➔ T ext-to-speech output .
