Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by first configuring your hardware, activa ting your service, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding internal co mpartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot. Installing the Mem or y Card Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 3. Replace the ba ttery cov er onto the back of the phone (1). 4. While applying pressure, slide the top portion towards the camera area (2) until yo u hear a light click. Note: Make sure the battery is properly installed before s witching on the phone.
8 Important!: Verify that the handset battery is installed prior to connection. If the battery is not properly installed and the wall charger is connected, the handset may power off and on continuously , preventing proper operation.
Getting Started 9 Switching the Phon e On or Off 1. Press and hold or until the phone switches on. The phone launches the activati on splash screen and then proceeds to search for the network. Once the network has been found, you can ma ke or receive calls.

Understanding Y our Phone 17 • Messaging : allows you to send a text or multim edia message while using the handset for other tasks. • Mobile W eb : allows you to launch the Mobile Web browser while using the handset for other tasks. • Music Player : allows you to launch the Music Player whi le using the handset for other tasks.
18 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vigation for your phone. The a887 has done away with the n eed for navigation wheels or keypads. The a887 is completely na vigable by either an onscreen touch or scroll. • T ouchi ng an onscreen option activ ates the fea ture.
Menu Navigation 19 Openin g an Appli cation 䊳 T ap the a ssociated onscree n icon. • Press to exit from the curre nt menu and retu rn to the previous screen . • Press to exit from the curren t location/function, cancel your input and return to the Idle screen.
20 Note: Scrolling requires that you press firmly on the screen then drag. When scrolling through a list make sure not to touch or press individual entries on the list as this will open the list entry. Accessing the Phone’s Main Men u Once you display a menu list, ta pping an item causes different functions, depending on its function.
Menu Navigation 21 Scrolling T hrough Field Entries Some screens will ask you to assign a value to an onscreen field by either touching the up/down selection arrows or by quickly sliding through these values by using your fin gerti p. An example of these actio ns can be found on t he Alarm page.
22 Y ou can easily customize the Widg et bar by allowing you to keep these mini-apps docked within the ba r itself or they can also be undocked by dragging anywhere onto your Id le screen. Addi ng and De leti ng Widgets T o select which item s are displayed or hi dden within the Widget bar: 1.
Menu Navigation 23 Photo Favorites : displays the Cont acts Favorites list. Y ou can use the pull-down Contacts menu to select all Cont acts and Groups. • Drag and drop the Photo Favorit es onto the desktop to view the contacts by either Favorites, Groups , or all Contacts.
24 Photo : allows you to view th e list of photo s downloaded from the web server , received in messages, or tak en by th e camera. Y ou can then assign the i mage as the current wall paper . • For more infor mation, refer to “Using the Camera” on page 93.
Menu Navigation 25 W idget Bar Navigatio n Y ou can drag the widgets to the de sktop to use the application or feature, then drag it back t o the Widget Bar when you are finished. Note: Many widgets can be used directly from the widget bar without dragging them onto the screen (ex: Bluetooth and Alarms).
26 R earranging Widgets Y ou can also customize the Widget bar by arranging the location of your current widgets. This ca n help you place your frequen tly used (favorite) widgets at the top of the list. 1. T ouch and hold the widget ( 1 ). 2. While still ho lding the icon, drag it away from the widget bar and drop it on th e main screen ( 2 ).
Call Functions 27 Section 4: Call Functions This section describes how to make or answer a c all. It also includes the features and functional ity associated with ma king or answering a call . For more informat ion, refer to “Call Settings” on page 62.

Press to return to the Idle screen. Ending a Call 䊳 Press key . Dialing a R ecent N umber All incoming, outgoing and miss ed calls are recorded in t he Calls menu.

Y ou can also tap on the search box and enter the first few l etters of the name you are searching for . 5. Follow the on-sc reen instructions to replace, add, or delete an entry .
30 • Send Message : to create a new text message and address it to either a manually entered number or a current entry from your Address Book. • Contacts : takes you to your Address Boo k where you can select a contact to call. Video Share The Video Share featur es allows you to place a call and share live or recorded video while o n the call.
Call Functions 31 7. During a Video Share session, your options are displayed as icons on the scree n. T o uch the corresponding icon to activate the fea ture. Tip: T o stop the video share call press the Stop key. 8. A pop-up message displays Video Share has stopped.

34 Deleting a Missed Call 1. T ouch the Missed Calls dialog. A list of t he most recently missed calls is displayed. 2. T ouch Delete . 3. Place a check mark adjacent to those entries you wish to select for deletion. • T ou ching All toggles the pl acement of a check mar k next to every entry in the l ist.
Call Functions 35 •L a s t S e n t : shows the size of the last data packet (measured in KB - kilobytes) sent by the phone sinc e the last tim e this counter was reset. • Last Received : shows the size of the last da ta packet (measured in KB - kilobyte s) received by the pho ne since th e last time t his counter was reset.

Call Functions 37 Using the Spe ake r phone Du ring an Activ e Call While in an ac tive call, it is possible to enable the speak erphone feature. 1. Dial the nu mber and press . 2. Once the call is answered, sli de Speaker to On to activate the speakerphone.
38 Call W aiting The Call W aiting feature al lows you to answer an incoming call while you have a ca ll in progress, if this ser vice is supported by the network, and you have set the Settings ➔ Call s ➔ Voice Call ➔ Call Wai ting Menu to Activated .
Entering T ext 39 Section 5: Entering T ext This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using the QWERTY keyboard-style keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entry system to reduce the nu m ber of key strokes needed t o enter text.
40 Changing the T ext Input Mode - K eyboard There are three main ke yboard layout keys that will chan ge the onscreen keys within the QWERTY keyboard. The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 123Sym , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the uppe r right hand corner to identify which mode you are currently in.
Entering T ext 41 3. T ouc h each key only onc e for each letter . A list of word options displays and include s a number indicating the words avai lable to chose fro m. 4. Use the up and down navigation keys in the word options box to select th e desired word.

Entering T ext 43 Using Symbols in P or tr ait Mode Symbol mode enables you to insert symbols and punctuation marks into text. 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and select Symbols ( ), then touch the desired symbol key .
44 Changing the T ext Input Mode - Handwriting Y ou can write your message using the Handwriting mode but if at any time you f eel you can’t reme mber how to input text, you can touch the Input Select field and se lect Key pad. The available T ext Input modes are: abc , Abc , ABC , Numeric , and Symbols .
Entering T ext 45 The following buttons can also be used in Handwriting mode: Handwriting Mode-Entering Character s 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and select Abc . The input mode indicator then changes to which activates th e Initial uppercase function.

50 •O n c e : repeats the mess age alert once. •P e r i o d i c : repeats the message alert periodically . 5. T ouch the Vibration Pattern field, then touch to select Vibration 1 - 3 and touch Save . 6. Drag the Vibration Intensity slider to the intensity level you desire (range is 0-7).

52 Outdoor Profile In this case, you are o utdoors and might not be able to hear the phone, or need an increased vo lume in order to hear the phone. For ex ample, you mig h t be jogging and need the phone to vibrate and ring loudly . Editing the Outdoor - Call Profile 1.

T o uch the Message Alert Repetition pull-down and select one of the fo llowi ng options and touch Save : •O n c e : repeats the message alert once. •P e r i o d i c : repeats the message alert periodically . 6. 54 Display and Light Settings In this menu, you can change va rious setting s for the display or backlight. 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Display and Light .

56 Time & Date This menu allows you to change the current time and date displayed. 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Time and Date . 2. T ouch the Time Zone Updating drop-down list and sel.
Changing Y our Settings 57 Language This menu allows you to select a display language for T ext language and T ext Input mode. Ch oose from Automatic, English, Français, and Español.
58 Motion Detection The Motion De tection featur e can be used for muting an incoming call or alarm , setting Sn ooze on an alarm , and starting and restarting a timer . 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone ➔ Motion Detection . 2. T ouch On to activat e the Motion Det ection feature, or touch Off to deactivate it.

62 Airplane Mode Airplane Mode allows yo u to use many of your phone’ s fea tures, such as Games, Voice note, etc., when you a re in an airplane or in any other area where making or rece iving calls or dat a is prohibited. When your phone is in Airplane Mode, it cannot send or receive a ny calls or acces s online informati on.

64 De vice Name 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Connectivity ➔ Bluetooth ➔ My Info . 2. T ouch the Name field, touch and hold to erase the current name. 3. Use the onscreen keypad/keybo ard to enter the new name for this device and touch .

66 • Media Player : sets t he Media Playe r to launch as the default applicat ion when a USB co nnection is detected. • Mass Storage : allows you to utiliz e the onboard storage capac ity of the phone’s MicroSD card to store and upload f iles.

72 Section 7: Mobile Video Y our phone is equipped with a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser which allows yo u to access the Internet and download media f iles directly to your phone. These media files are displayed u sing the buil t-in Media Player .

Camera 93 Section 10: Camera This section explains ho w to use the camera on your phone. Y ou can take photographs and shoot video by using th e built-in camera function ality . Y our 2.0 megapi xel camera produces photos in JPEG format. Import ant!: Do not take photos of people without their permission.
94 Note: The number of JPEG pictures remaining on the selected media appears in the upper-right of the screen. This is an approximate number of total pictures which can be taken at the current image size. 4. If desired, before taking the photo, you can touch onscreen icons to access vari ous camera options.
