Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section helps you to quickly start using your device. Understanding T his User Manual The sections of this manual generally follo w the features of your device. A robust index for features begins on page 239.
6 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed information about how to use your device. T o make this possible, the follo wing text conventions are used to re present often-used steps: Bat ter y Y our device is powered by a re chargeable, standard Li-Ion battery.
Getting Started 7 1. Insert the USB cable into the Charging Head (1). 2. Insert the USB cable into the device’ s Charger/ Accessory Port (2). Warning! While the device is charging, if the touch screen does not function due to an unstable power supply , unplug the USB power ada pter from the power outlet or unplug the USB cable from the device.
8 Note: If the batt ery is com pletely dischar ged, you cannot t urn on the device, even with the USB power ada pter connected. Allow a depleted battery to charge for a few minutes before you tr y to turn on the device.

10 Wi- Fi Make sure the Wi-Fi OFF / ON icon is set to ON and choose one of the following options: To u c h Add Wi-Fi network to enter a Network SSID tha t is not listed. To u c h Scan to make sure you have an accura te list of Wi-Fi networks. T ouch one of the Wi-Fi networ ks in the list, enter the password, and touch Connect .
Getting Started 11 Enable Pur chases This screen displays if you signed in to your Google account. Enter purchase information for your Google Play account and touch Save . – or – T ouch Skip . Backup and Restore This screen also displays if you signed i n to your Google account.
12 Creating a New Google Account In order to utilize your device to the fulles t extent, you will need to create a Google™ Acco unt when you first use your device. With a Google Account, Google a pplications will always be in sync between your tablet and computer .
Getting Started 13 T ask Ma nager Pop-Up The T ask manager pop-up provides information about Active applications and incl udes a RAM manager . It also has a link to the T ask Manager application. T o access the T ask manager pop-up: 1. From a Home screen, touch Mini App T ray ➔ T ask manager .

Understanding Y our Device 27 Quick Settings T o view and control the most common settings for your tablet, as well as accessing t he complete Settings application, open the Quick Sett ings panel. 1. T ouch the Time in the System Bar . The Quick Settings pop-up displays.
28 Sweep the pop-up to the left to see additional settings. •M o b i l e d a t a : Disables mobile data s o you can no longer use applications such as Browser , Email, and Y ouT ube using a mobile network. • Power saving : When enabled, your d evice automatically analyzes the screen an d adjusts the brightness to conserve battery power .
Understanding Y our Device 29 Status Bar The Status Bar is part of the System Bar and dis plays icons to show network status, battery power , and other details. Wi-Fi Connected : Y our device is connected to a Wi-F i network. Samsung account : Set up your Samsung account.
30 Airplane Mode : Indicates that the Airp lane Mode is active, which allows you to use man y of your device’ s featur es, but it cannot access online information o r applications. Set up input methods : When the keyboard is being displayed, touch this icon to display a menu of quick keyboard settings.
Understanding Y our Device 31 Primar y Shor tcuts Primary Shortcuts appear at th e bottom of the main Home screen. Tip : The main Home screen is usually the center H ome screen. The default Primary Shortcuts are: Browser , Camera, Play Store, A T&T , and Settings.
32 Widget Options The fol lowing widge ts are ava ilable. • Alarm : Add an alarm then touch the widget to edit the alarm. F or more informati on, refer to “Al arm” on page 13 3. • Applicatio n monitor : This appli cation acts as a task manager that moni tors and controls active or do wnloaded pr ograms, RAM, or Storage.

Navigate to the Home s creen on which you want to place the App Shortcut. 2. T ouch Apps . – or – T ouch and hold on th e screen until the Home screen options pop-up displays.
36 Managing Folders T o name a folder: T ouch the folder , touch the Unnamed folder field, and use the keyboard to enter a name for the folder . T o add an App shortcut to a folder: 1. Add the App shortcut to the Home screen that the folder is on.

38 Customizing the Mini App T ray Y ou can choose applica tions to display on th e Mini App T ray and arrange them in any order . 1. From any screen, touch Mini App T ray at th e bottom, center of the screen. 2. T ouch Edit at the right side of the tray .

40 AT & T N a v i g a t o r : A T&T Na vigator provides turn-by- turn navigati on and access to local searches. A shortcut to A T&T Na vigator displays on the Home screen in an A T&T folder by de fault. For more information, refer t o “A T&T Naviga tor” on page 139.

Understanding Y our Device 43 Smart Remote : Locate and watch programming on your tv and then control your entertainment system with gestures from the device. A shortcut to Smart Remote displays on a Home screen by default. For more informa tion, refer to “Smart Re mote” on page 165.
44 Section 3: Entering T e xt This section describes how to enter words, letters, punctuation and numbers when you need to enter text. Samsung K eyboard Y our device uses a virtual QWERTY keyboard for text entry called the Samsung keyboard .
Entering T ext 45 Using the Samsung K eyboar d The Samsung keyboard is a custom virtual QWER TY keyboard, featuring predictive text. Input charact ers by touching the on-screen keys with your finge r or use speech recognition. As you enter characters, predic tive text matches your k ey touches to common words and displays them.
46 Entering Symbols and Numbers The number keys are displayed a t the top of the keyboard and are always ava ilable. T o enter common symbols, touch to switch to Sym bols mode, then touch the corr esponding key . There are two pa ges of symbols. T ouch to switch to the next page.

48 Editing T ext Y ou can edit the text you enter in text fields by cutting, copying, or pasting text. These operations can b e performed within and across apps. Ho wever , some apps do not support editing some or all of the text displa yed while others may offer their ow n way to select text .
Entering T ext 49 Pasting T ext T o paste previously copied text: 1. T ouch the text at the point you want to pas te the copied text. The Cursor displays at the point you touched. 2. T ouch the Cursor . A pop-up displays. 3. T ouch Pas t e in the pop-up.
50 Here are a few tips to get you started: • Auto-spacing : When you fini sh a word, just li ft your finger an d start the next word. • Double letters : Just “scribble” on the key . • Auto-ca pitalization : T9 T race recognizes and capitalizes the first word of sentences.
Entering T ext 51 As you write, suggestions are offe red in the word options area in case the correct le tters were not recognized. Handwriting Tips • For uppercase letters, write the le tter larger than the lowerca se letters. • Write a dash (horizontal line) to add a space.
52 • Recognition time : Set the time it takes for your tablet to recognize what you write. C hoose from 100ms, 3 00ms, 500ms, 1000ms, or 2000ms. • Pen thickness : Change the pen thickness to 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 pixels, as the exam ples demonstrate. • Pen color : Change the pen color to bla ck, red, blue, green, or brown.
Contacts and Accoun ts 53 Section 4: Contacts an d Accounts This section explains how to manage contacts and accounts. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of ac counts. With synchronization, in formation on your device is updated with any informa tion that changes in your accounts.

70 • Sync schedule : Set up your peak and off-peak sche dule controls, which determine s when your tablet checks the em ail service for new email. • Out of office settings : Lets you set how email is hand led for a defined period of time , while you are unable to check you r email.
Messaging 71 Incoming Ser ver Settings Y our account’ s exchange or incoming server settings are different, depending on the ki nd of email service for the account: POP3, IMAP , or Exchange ActiveSync. • Domain User name : If your Exchange Activ eSync ser ver requires that you specify a dom ain, ente r it before the backslash.
72 • Require sign-in : Check this option to enter a username an d password for y our SMTP server , if your email service provider requires tha t you enter them to send email. • User name : Y our username on the SMTP serv er (this may not be the same as your username on the POP3 or IMAP server for incoming mail).
Messaging 73 4. The device communicates with the Google ser ver to set up your account and synchronize your email. When complete, your Gm ail displays in the Inbox. R efreshing Y our Gmail Account Refresh your account to update your devic e from the Gmail servers.

76 • Days of mail to sync : Set the number days to sync email for this Gmail account. • Manage labels : Choose which labels a re synchronized. • Download attach ments : Enable or disable au to-download of files attached to recent mess ages when connected th rough Wi-Fi.
Messaging 77 Invite a F riend to Chat Y ou can invite anyone with a G oogle Account to become your friend in Google T alk, so yo u can chat with each other and view each other’s online status. 1. While viewing your Friends list, touch Add friend . 2.

Y ou can set up Circles of friends, visit the Stream to get upda tes from your Ci rcles, use Messenger for fast messaging with everyone in yo ur Circles, or use Instant Upload to automatically upload videos and photos to your own private album on Google+.

90 Play Music App The Play Music app contains a music play er that plays music and other audio files tha t you copy from your compu ter or store online. Note: Some options described in this manual may not be availabl e until you sign in to your Google ac count.
Multimedia 91 Changing Librar y View Y ou can change the way you view the contents of your library . 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Play Music . 2. T ouch the name of the current view, such as Recent , near the top- left of the Ap plication bar .
92 • Hide now playing bar / Show now playing bar : Hide or sh ow the Now Playing bar that displays at the b ottom of the screen. Y ou can return to the Now playing screen from othe r Music screens by touching the nam e of the current song in the Now Playing bar .
