5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by fi rst configuring your hardware, activating your service, and then setting up your voice mail.
Getting Started 6 4. Carefully slide the S IM card under the metal bracket and i nto the SIM card socket until the c ard locks into place. Make sure that the card’ s gold contacts face into th e phone and that the upper - left angled corner of the card is positioned as shown below .

11 Char ging a Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion batter y . A tr avel adapter , which is used for chargi ng the batter y , is included with your phone. Use onl y approved batteries and chargers. Ask yo ur local Samsung dealer for further details.

Understanding Y our Phone 22 Backligh t A backlight illumina tes the display and the keypad. When you press an y key , the backli ght comes on. It goes off when no keys are pressed within a given period of time, dep ending on the setting within the Backlight menu.
23 Help Help is designed to work with t-zones to show you some of the uni que features of your pho ne. Y ou can search help files on the f ly while traveling, at home or anywhere, using help .wa p.t-mobile.com. 1. In Idle mode, press the Menu ➔ Help and press the Select soft key or the key .
Wi-Fi 24 Section 3: Wi-Fi This section introduces you to T -Mobile Wi-Fi compatibili ty and provides information on Wi-F i and instructions on how to use this type of co nnection with your phone.

Wi-Fi 26 Connecting to W i-Fi for the First Time Important!: Y ou must set up your wireless router first before using your phone to connect to Wi-Fi. For T-Mobile routers, run the CD that comes with the router and follow its instructions.
27 Y ou are connected to your first Wi-Fi network and can begin making calls using Wi-Fi or yo ur regular T -Mobile GSM network. T o access all of the Wi-Fi fe atures on your phone, go to Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi . If the T utorial does not display on your phone, see “Connecting to Wi-Fi Networks” on page 27.
Wi-Fi 28 A vailable Netw orks This list of available networks disp lays all the availabl e Wi-Fi ne tworks to which you can connect. T he networks ar e listed in the orde r of their signal strength, from the strongest signal to the weakest.
29 Connec t to Wi -Fi fr om th e A vaila ble Net works 1. From th e idle screen, pres s Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Wi-Fi ➔ Av ailable Networks option and press the Select soft key or th e key . 2. The phone searche s for all available networks a nd then displays a list of available networks.
Wi-Fi 30 A vailable Netw orks Options From the Available Networks menu, press the Options soft key to use th e following options : • Refresh : Refreshes the list of available networks to inc lude any recent changes, for example new Wi-Fi networks recen t ly set up or others that were removed from service.
31 Connec t to a Spe cific Saved Network 1. From the idle screen, press Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Wi-Fi ➔ Saved Networks and press the Select soft key or the key . The phone displays your Saved Networks list. 2. Highlight the network to whic h you want to connect and press Options > Connect .
Wi-Fi 32 • Add new : Adds a new network to your Saved Networks list. This o ption also allows you to manually add settings for the new network. The submenu items for the Add New menu are as follows: – From A vailable Netw orks : Allows you to add a new network from the list of Available Network s.
33 Use Quic k Connect 䊳 From the Idle screen, press and hold the ke y . Y o ur phone connects to th e strongest Wi-F i network within range. Use the following steps for an other method to access the Quick Connect option: 1. From th e Idle screen, pres s Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Wi-Fi ➔ Quick Connect option and press the Select soft key or the key.
Wi-Fi 34 Get Security K ey Select the Get Security Key option from the Wi-Fi menu to acquire the security key fo r a T-Mobile Wi-Fi compatible phone from a T- Mobile wireless router . When used wit h an open network , the Get Securit y Ke y process creates a WPA key on the router .
35 Use Get Security K ey 1. From th e Idle screen, pres s Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Wi-Fi option and press the Se lect soft key or the key. 2. Highlight the Get Security Key option and press the Selec t soft key or the key . 3. Follow the on-screen prompts to step through the process of acquiring secu rity keys.
Wi-Fi 36 Add From Av ailable Network Option T o add a new network t o your Saved Networks li st from your list of a vailable networks : 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Wi-Fi option and press the Select soft key or the key . 2. Highlight the Add New Network ➔ From Av ailable Networks option and pres s the Select soft key .

39 Section 4: Call Functions This section describes how to ma ke or answer a c all. It also ex plains the features and func tionality as sociated with making or answering a call . Call Functions 40 Re dialing the Last Number The phone stores the numbers of the calls you’ve diale d, received, or missed if t he caller is iden tified. T o recall any of these numbers: 1. Press the key to return to Idle mod e (if you typed characters on the display).
41 Adjusting the Call V olume During a call, use the Volume keys on the lef t side of the phone, to adjust the speak er volume. 䊳 Press the key to increase the vol ume level and the key to decr ease the speaker volume le vel.
Call Functions 42 The following Call Record options are a vailable: All calls This menu lets you view the 90 most rece nt calls y ou received , dialed, and missed. The name or number , if already stored in your Phonebook , displays with t he number of occu rrences for each number .
43 3. Highlight a call record and pres s the Options soft key for the follo wing options: • Call bac k : Allows y ou to retu rn the call. Tip: Y ou can also return the call from the Idle screen by pressing the Call soft key. • Send message : Allows you to s end a T ext mes sage, Pi cture messa ge, or Aud io postc ard back to the missed number .
Call Functions 44 Delete all This menu allows you to del ete all of the reco rds in each call type separa tely , or you can de lete all of your c all types at on e ti me. 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Call records ➔ Delete all and press t he Select soft key or the key .
45 T o exit and reactivate the previous sound settings: 䊳 Press and hold the key again unti l the “Ex it Vibration Mo de” message displays. Th e Vibration Mode icon ( ) no longer displays. Selecting Functions and Options Y our phone offers a set of customiz able fun c tions.
Call Functions 46 In some functions, you are asked for a password or PIN. Enter the corre ct code and press the OK soft key or the key . When you acce ss a list of options , your phone highlights the cu rrently active option .
47 T o s witch betwe en the two ca lls: 1. Press the Options soft key , selec t Swap , and press the key . The current a c tive call is plac ed on hold and the call on hold is then rea c tivated so that you can continue conversing with that person. 2.
Call Functions 48 Muting or Sending K ey T ones These options allow y ou to turn the key tones off or on . If the Mute keys opti on is On, your phone does no t transmit the DTMF (Dual T one Multi-Frequency) tones of the keys, which then al lows you to p ress key s without he aring annoying key tones during a call.
49 T o answer a new call while another ca ll is in progress: 1. Press either the Accept soft key or the key to ans wer the incoming call. The first cal l is automaticall y put on hold. 2. T o switch between the two calls, press the Options soft key , highlight Swa p and press the Select soft key or the key .
Call Functions 50 6. Press the Options soft key or the key. Select the Join option and pres s the Select soft key or the key . Note: There are a maximum of two callers that can be joined to a single multi-party line. Additional callers would participate in a n ew Multiparty session which can be held in conjunction with the previous multiparty call.
51 Section 5: Menu Na vigation This section explains the menu navigation for your phone. Menu Naviga tion Y ou can tailor the phone’ s range of functions to your needs using me nus and sub-menus. Menus and s ub-menus can be accessed by sc rolling using the Naviga tion keys or by using the sho rtcuts.
Menu Navigation 52 Using Shortcuts The menu items, such as menus, sub-men us, and options, are numbere d and can be accessed quickly by using their shortcut numbers. For the main menus, p ress the corre sponding number keys (1 to 0) to access any one of the shortcuts .
53 Section 6: Entering T ext This section outlines how to select th e desired text inpu t mode w hen entering characters into yo ur phone. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text system to reduce th e number of key strokes associated with entering text.
Entering T ext 54 1. Press the Right soft key to display the Input mode menu. The following opt ions are available: • T9 mode : allows you to enter te xt in T9 mode. •A B C m o d e : allows you to enter text. • Number mode : allows you to enter numbers.
55 The word that you type displays on the screen. The wo rd may c hange with eac h consecutive k ey that you press. 2. Enter the whole word b efore editing or deleting the key strokes.
Entering T ext 56 T o shift case in T9 mode: 䊳 Press the key There are 3 cases: Initi al capital, Capita l lock, and Lower case. Note: Y ou can move the cursor by using the Navigation keys. T o delete characters: 䊳 Press the key. Press and hold the key to clear the display .
57 Ke y s By default, the first letter of an entr y is capitalized and all co nsecutive letter s are kept in lowe rcase (unless the Shift key is used). After a character is entered, the cursor automatically advanc es to the next spac e after two seconds or when you enter a c haracter on a di fferent key .
Entering T ext 58 Using Symbolic Mode Symbolic m ode enables yo u to insert symbols and punctuation mark s into text. T o display a list of symbols press the Right soft key and selc t Symbolic from the menu l ist. 1. Press the corresponding number key to select a symbol.
59 Section 7: Understanding Y our Phonebook This section explains ho w to use and manage your Phonebook. Y ou can save phone numbers to your phone’ s memory or to your SIM card. Using Contact List The Contact Li st displays all the phone numbers a nd contact information stored on both the phone’ s memor y and the SIM card.

The following type s are available: • Mobile : assigns t he number ente red to the Mobil e entr y . •H o m e : assigns the number entered to the Home entry .
61 3. Highlight SIM card and press the Select soft key or the key . Note: Y ou can also set the Default savi n g option to Ask on saving in the Management menu. With this op tion, you are prompted for a storage location each time you add a new contact.
Understanding Y our Phonebook 62 • Add to block list : allows you to ad d the currently created conta ct entry to a list of blocked numbers. These numb ers are rejected by th e phone. • Print via Bluetooth : allows you to send the C ontact list to a Bluetooth e nabled printer .

Once you locate the e ntry , press the key to dial the number , or press the Options sof t k ey t o a cce ss the following Phoneboo k entry options: •E d i t : allows you to edit the Nam e and number for the selected co ntact. • Send message : allows you to send a message to the selected numb er .
Understanding Y our Phonebook 64 Dialing a Number from Phonebook Once you store phone numbers in the Phoneb ook, yo u can dial them ea sily and quickl y by using the location numbers assigned to them and listed in the Phonebook .
65 Editing a Caller Group Note: View contacts must be set to Phone and SIM card in order to make the Groups option accessible. 1. In Idle mode, press the Menu ➔ Pho nebook ➔ Groups option and press the Select soft key or the key . 2. Highlight the group yo u want and press th e Options soft key .
Understanding Y our Phonebook 66 Block List 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Phonebook ➔ Block list and press the Select soft key or the key . 2. The first time you add to the block list, Highlight [Add to block list] and press the OK soft key . After the initial add to block list, press Options ➔ Add new and press the Right Navigatio n key .
67 Management The Management menu allows you to select where your contacts are saved, copy yo ur SIM contacts to your phone, delete your contacts, so rt by contacts, or check your memory status. 䊳 In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Phonebook ➔ Management and press the key .
Understanding Y our Phonebook 68 Memor y Status Y ou can check how many names and nu mbers are stored in the Phonebook, within both the SIM card, Phone memory, and the FDN. Y ou can also see the cu rrent storage capacity of both memories. 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Phonebook ➔ Management and press the Select soft key or the key.
69 FDN List FDN (Fixed Dial Number) mode, if supported by your SIM card , allows you to rest rict your outgoing calls to a limited set of phone numbers. The FDN List allo ws you to set up a li st of numbers your phone may dial. Use Security settings to enable FDN mode.
Messages 70 Section 8: Messages This section describe s how to send or receiv e different types of m e ssages. It also ex plains the features and functional ity associated with me ssaging.
71 3. Create your message. Note: For further details about entering characters, see “Changing the T ext Input Mode” on page 53. Y ou can enter up to 160 standard Alphabet characters per page in your message. The message can be up to 12 pages long for a total of 1920 characters.
Messages 72 Picture Messa ges This menu allows you to use the Multimedia Message Service (MMS). Picture Messaging is a messa ging service tha t provides deliver y of personal picture messages from phone to phone or from phone to em ail. The Picture Messa ge icon ( ) displays on the phone when yo u receive a new picture message.

77 Inbo x The Inbox stores received messages. Y ou can tell what kind of message was rec eived by the ic on displayed. If the icon envelope is op en then the message was read, otherwise a c losed envelope displays.
Messages 78 •D e l e t e : deletes the selected text m essage or multiple messages. • Move to phone/SIM card : allows you to move the message from the SI M card into th e phone’s memory or from the phone’ s memory to th e SIM card . Depends on where the current message was saved.
79 •F o r w a r d : allows you to forwar d the message to another num ber . • Delete : deletes ei ther a select ed or multipl e picture messages. •S o r t b y : allows you to sort messag es by Read/Unr ead, Date, Na me, T y pe, Size, or Subject.
Messages 80 Listening to a V oice Note from the Inbo x 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Messages and press the Select soft key or the key to ente r the menu. 2. Highlight the Inbox option and press the Select soft key or th e ke y . 3. Select a Voice No t e from the list and press the Options soft key .
81 •L o c k / U n l o c k : allows you to protect th e message deleti on. • Properties : shows you informati on about the message, such as time and date the message was received, the sender’ s email address or ph one number , recip ient’ s email address or phone number , Cc, message siz e, priori ty , and class.
Messages 82 Outbox This message box stores me ssages that you sent. When you enter this menu, the lis t of messages in the Outbox displays with the re cipients’ phone numbers or names, if available i n your Phonebook. 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Messages and press the Select soft key or the key to ente r the menu.
83 V oice Mail This menu provides you with a way of accessing your voice mailbox, if pro v ided by your network. 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Messages and pre ss the Select soft key or the key to enter the menu. 2. Highlight V oice mail and press th e Call soft key .
Messages 84 Picture message Use the following options to set Send and Receive settings for Pictu re messages. Send Settings • Delivery report : when this option is enabled, the network inform s you whether or not your mess age was delivered.
85 Memor y Status Y ou can view the amount of the allocated mem ory and the memory availabl e for picture me ssages. The display shows the t otal space incl ud ing the used and free space.
Messages 86 Star ting yo ur Instant Messaging 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ IM and press the Select soft key or the key to enter the me nu. 2. Highlight the messenger servic e to which you have previousl y subscribed to by using the Up or Down Navigation key and press the Select soft key or th e key .
87 Section 9: Changing Y our Settings This section explains the sou nd and phone settings for your phone. It inc ludes such sett ings as: display , security , and memory memor y settings a ssociated with your phone.
Changing Y our Settings 88 Ring tone This menu allows you to select a ring melody . 1. Highlight Ring tone and press the key. 2. Use the Up or Down key to highlight a ring tone or press the Left or Right key t o select a file f rom eith er the Default m elodies , Vo ice list, Sounds, or M usic folders.
89 Message tone This menu allows you to set up the ringer for incomin g messa ges. Y ou can set the T one , Alert type, and Repe tition. 1. Highlight the To n e field and use the key to display the op tions. Select Message tone 1, Message tone 2, Message tone 3, or Message tone 4, and press the Select soft key .

91 Wallpaper This menu allows you to change the backgro und image to be displayed in Idle mode. 1. Highlight the Wallpap er option and press the key to open the follo wing options: • Browse Wallpapers : allows you to d ownload additio nal wallpapers f rom t-zon es.
Changing Y our Settings 92 T o change the color of the font: 1. Highlight the Font color option and press the Select soft key or the key. 2. Use the Left or Right k ey to select either Basic (black), Rainbow , Monochrome or Gradation .
93 For example, if you set On for 30 sec and Dim for 15 sec , after 30 seconds the backlight on the keys wo uld turn off and 15 seconds later the displ ay light would turn off. 1. Press the Left or Right Navigation keys to change each field’ s settings.
Changing Y our Settings 94 The following opt ions are available: • Time zone updating : allows you to set the parameter for updating the on board time to either: Automatic (via carrier sync up), Manual only (user -defined), Prompt first (User is prompted for time change, if available).
95 USB mode This menu selects the method o f communi cation for t he US B port, the options inc lude: •M o d e m : allows y ou to use th e phone as a wi reless modem f or communica tion bet ween a computer and the Inter net. • M ass storage : allows yo u to utiliz e the onboard storage capac ity of the phon e to store and upl oad files.
Changing Y our Settings 96 Lock applica t ion With this feature yo u can lock your applications which prov ide access to information such as ca ll records, phonebook, messages, images, and sounds. Once you lock the contents, you mu st enter the phone’ s password to access the associated menus.
97 Chang e PIN code This feature allows you to change your current PIN, p rovided that the Check PIN code feature is enabled. Y ou must enter the current PIN before you can specify a new one. Once you enter a n ew PIN, you are asked to confirm the PIN numbe r by re-entering it.
Changing Y our Settings 98 T o reset your settings: 1. Highlight one of the opti ons and press the key to place a che ck mark next to the option. 2. Press the Reset soft key . 3. Y ou are prompted with Reset settings? . Press the Ye s soft key . 4. Enter the 4- to 8-digit password and press the OK soft key or the ke y .
99 Y ou can also check ho w many names a nd numbers are stored on the Phone, on the SIM card, and the FDN li st. 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Phone settings ➔ Memory status and press the key . 2. Select a category from the menu and press the key to view the memory st atus for that categor y .
