Getting Started 7 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section helps you to quickly start using your device. Understanding T his User Manual The sections of this manual generally follo w the features of your device. A robust index for features begins on page 218.
8 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed information about ho w to use your device. T o make this possible, the following text conventions are used to re present often-used steps: Bat ter y Y our device is powered by a re chargeable, standa rd Li-Ion battery.
Getting Started 9 1. Insert the USB cable into the Charging Head. 2. Insert the USB cable into the device’ s Charger/ Accessory Port. Warning! While the device is charging, if the touch screen does not function due to an unstable power supply , unplug the USB power ada pter from the power outlet or unplug the USB c able from the device.

12 • Thank you : This screen displays th e Device name and an option to learn more . – Device name : Enter a name for the tablet. This name is used to identify the t ablet when usi ng Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, and so on. The default is the model name, SM-P600.
Getting Started 13 Memor y Car d Y our device supports removable microSD or microSDHC memory cards with ma ximum capacities of 64 GB (depending on the memory ca rd manufacturer and type). Memory cards are used to s tore music, photos, videos, and other files.
14 R emo ving a Memor y Car d Important! T o prevent dama ge to information stored on the memory card, unmount the card before removing it from the device. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings ➔ General tab ➔ Storage . 2. Under SD card , touch Unmount SD card and then touch OK .

Understanding Y our Device 21 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using your device. Note: Unless stated otherwise, instruct ions in this user manual start with the device unlocked, at the Home screen.
22 7. Google Searc h : Search the web by typing or speaking. For more informati on, refer to “Google Search” on page 80. 8. Apps : Display the Apps screen. Extended Home Screen The Home screen consists of the Ho me panel plus additional panels that extend beyond the d i splay width to provide more space for adding shortcuts and widgets.
Understanding Y our Device 23 Adding and Remo ving Home Screen Panels Y our device comes with seven Home screen panels. Y ou can customize the Home screen by removing or adding panels. Note: The panel in the center position displays when you touch Home .

Understanding Y our Device 25 Using the T ouch Screen Use only fingers or the S Pen to use the touch screen. Caution! Do not allow the touch screen to come into contact with other electrical device s. Electro static discharges can cause the touch screen to malfunction.
26 T ouching and Holdi ng T ouch and hold an item for more than 2 seconds to access available options. Dra gging T o move an icon, thumbnail, or previ ew to a new location, touch and hold it and drag it to the tar get position.

Flicking Flick left or right on the Home scree n or the Applications screen to see another panel. Flick up or down to scroll through a webpage or a list, such as cont acts.
28 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a we bpage, map, or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out. Control Motions Simple motions allow easy control of the device. Before using motions, make sure the motion fe ature is activated. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings ➔ Controls tab ➔ Motion s .
Understanding Y our Device 29 Tilting T ouch and hold two points on the screen, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. Note: T o m ov e an ic on t o a new lo ca tion, touch and hold it and drag it to the t arget position. For more information, re fer to “Dragging” on page 26.
30 Palm Motions Use palm motions to co ntrol the device by touching th e screen. Before using motions, make sure the palm mo tion feature is activated. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings ➔ Controls tab ➔ Pal m m ot io n . 2. T ouch the OFF/ON button to turn P alm motion ON .
Understanding Y our Device 31 SP e n The S Pen is a stylus that assists you in p erforming different functions. By using the Pen b u tton, you can minimize having to switch between touch and pen input. S Pen button : Perform advanced S P en actions. S Pe n tip : Per form bas ic S Pe n act ions .
32 Using the S P en The included S Pen can be used to easily select items or perform functions. Actions using t he S Pen with the button pressed provide additional conv eniences, such as screen capture.
Understanding Y our Device 33 Capturing Scr eenshots With the S Pen b utton pressed, touch the screen until you hear a click. A screenshot is saved in the Galler y ➔ Screensho ts folder . It is possible to draw or write on or to crop a screenshot. The edited image is sa ved in the Gallery ➔ Screenshots folder .
34 Selecting and Capturing an Ima ge With the S Pen butt on pressed, draw a line ar ound an area to select it. If necessar y , use one of the follow ing options: Select an application to use wi th the selected area from the icons that appear a t the bottom of the screen.
Understanding Y our Device 35 Some items have contextual menus tha t make the S P en pointer glow . Press the S Pen button to display the menu while hovering the S Pen over the item. Air View Use this feature to perform various fu nctions while the S Pe n is hovering over the screen.
36 Samsung Smar t Pause Use this feature to pause videos w hen you look away from the screen. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings ➔ Controls tab ➔ Smart screen . 2. T ouch Smart pause to enable it. During video playback, look away from the screen to pause the video.

Tilt your head downward or upward, or tilt the device fo rwar d or backward to scroll in that direction. Activating Multi W indo w Use this feature to r un two applications on the screen at the same time.
38 T o hide the Multi Window panel: T ouch and hold Back again. Drag the circle between the app lication panels left or right to adjust the size of the panels. T ouch the panel handle to hide or show the panel. When a panel is open, touch and hold the handle and d rag it to the left or right edge of the screen to move the panel.

Understanding Y our Device 41 Indicator Icons The icons displayed at the top of the scre en provide information about the sta tus of the device. The icons listed in the table below a re most common.
42 Primar y Shor tcuts Primary Sho rtcuts display at the bottom of the Home screens. Tip : The main Home screen is usually the center Hom e screen. The default Primary Shortcuts are: S Note, Calendar , Internet, Email, Gallery , Scra pbook, Dropbox, Play Store.
Understanding Y our Device 43 R emo ving Wi dg ets T ouch and hold the Widget until the Remove icon displays, then drag the widget to the Remove icon. Note: This action does not actually delete the Widget, it just removes it from the current Home screen.
44 Fo ld e r s Place Folders on a Home screen to organize items together . Adding Folders T o crea te a folder on a Home page: 1. Navigate to the desir ed Home screen. 2. T ouch and hold on the screen until the Home screen pop-up displays and then touch Folder .

48 Entering Uppercase T ouch before entering a character . For all caps, touch it twice. Changing the keyboard type T ouch and hold , and then touch to change the keyboard type. Changing language k eyboards Add languages to the keyboard, and then slide the space key left or right to change lan guage keyboards.
Understanding Y our Device 49 When hovering the S Pen over a text field, the icon appears a t the upper left corner of the text field. T ouch to write with the S Pen. T o make si mple corrections, change input languages, or enter a space between characters, touch each correction tool displayed on the handwriting pad.
50 Connecting to a Wi-Fi Network Connect the device to a Wi-Fi network to use the I nternet or share media files with other devices. For more informa tion, refer to “Wi-Fi ” on page 97. T ur ning Wi-Fi On and Off Open the notifica tions panel, and then to uch Wi-F i to turn it on or off.
Understanding Y our Device 51 Setting Up Accounts Google applica tions, such as Play Store, require a Google account. Samsung Apps requires a S amsung account.
52 Connecting with Samsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media contents and personal inform a tion with Samsung devices. Download the late st Samsung Kies from the Samsung website. 1. Connect the device to the c omputer using the USB cable.
Understanding Y our Device 53 Upgrading with Samsung Kies Launch Samsung Kies and co nnect the device to the computer . Samsung Kies automati cally recognizes the device and shows available updates in a dialogue box, if any . Click the Update button in the dialogue box to start upgr ading.
54 Section 3: Accounts an d Contacts This section expl ains how to mana ge accounts and conta cts. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that changes in your accounts.
Accounts and Contac ts 55 Y our Google Account In order to utilize your device to t he fullest extent, you will need to create a Google Account when you f irst use your device. With a Google Account, Google a pplications will always be in sync between you r tablet and computer .

58 Sharing Contact Information Y ou can send a contact’ s informa t ion using Bluetooth to other Bluetooth devices, or in an Em ail or Gmail as an a ttachment. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices accept contacts an d not all devices support transfers of multiple contact s.
Accounts and Contac ts 59 Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster or to quickly send m essages to group members. Create a New Group Create a new group when you add or edit a contact. 1. T ouch Contacts . 2. T ouch the Groups tab.

Hangouts Previously known as Google T alk , Hangouts is an online place to meet friends and family , shar e photos, and host video calls. Conversation logs are automatically saved to a Chats area in your Gmail account.

76 Creating Recommended Albums When you take photos at one loca tion, the device automatically sort s your photos into albums based on your specified criteria and suggests making the new albums. To u c h Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Home city , and the n set a method for recognizing your location.

88 Dual Camera Mode When you take a landscape photo with the rear ca mera, the photo or video captured by th e front camer a appears in an inset window, or vice versa. Use this feature to take a beautiful landscape photo and a self-portrait simultaneously .

90 •L o c a t i o n t a g : Attach a GPS location tag to the photo . Note: T o improve GPS signals, a void shooting in locations where the signal may be obst ructed, such a s between buildings or in low-lying areas, or in poor weather conditions. Tip : Y our location may a ppear on your photos when you upload them to the Inter net.
