Get ting Start ed With Spr int PCS Service Deter mining if Y our Phone is Alr eady Activ ated If you received your MM-5600 b y Sanyo in the mail or purchased it at a Sprint Store, it probably has alread y been activated. All you need to do is unlock your phone.
Set ting Up Y our V oicemail All unansw ered calls to your Sprint PCS Vision Phone are automatically transf er red to your voicemail, e ven if your phone is in use or tur ned off. Theref ore, you will want to set up your voicemail and personal greeting as soon as your Sprint PCS V ision Phone is activated.
Spr int PCS Account P assw ords As a Sprint PCS customer , you enjoy unlimited access to your personal account information, your voicemail account, and your Sprint PCS Vision account. T o ensure that no one else has access to your information, you will need to create passwor ds to protect your privacy .

V iewing the Display Scr een Y our phone’ s display screen provides a wealth of information about your phone’s status and options. This list identifies the symbols you’ ll see on your phone’ s display screen: shows your cur rent signal strength.
shows the level of your batter y charge. The more black you see, the more power you have left. shows your batter y is charging. indicates the vibrate featur e is set. indicates volume le vel 4 or 1 and vibrate feature are set. indicates 1 beep feature is set.

T ur ning Y our Phone On and Off T ur ning Y our Phone On T o tur n your phone on: Press . Once your phone is on, it displays “Looking for ser vice... ” whic h indicates that your phone is searc hing for a signal. When your phone finds a signal, it automatically enters standb y mode – the phone’ s idle state.
Using Y our Phone’ s Batt ery and Charg er Batt ery Capacity Y our Sprint PCS Vision Phone is equipped with a Lithium Ion (LiIon) batter y . It allows you to recharge your batter y before it is fully drained. The batter y provides up to 3.4 hour s of continuous digital talk time (up to 1.
Charging the Batt ery Y our Sprint PCS Vision Phone’ s LiIon batter y is recharg ea ble and should be charg ed as soon as possible so you can begin using your phone.
Displa ying Y our Phone Number Just in case you forg et your phone number , your Sprint PCS Vision Phone can remind you. T o display your phone number: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Contacts and press . 3. Select My Phone# and press . Note: T o access the phone’ s main menu, press from standby mode.
Making and Answer ing Calls Making Calls Placing a call from your Sprint PCS Phone is as easy as making a call from any land line phone. Just enter the number and press and you’ re on your way to clear calls. T o place a call using your ke ypad: 1. Make sure your phone is on.
Dialing Options Dialing options are display ed when you press Options (right softke y) after entering number s in the phone’ s standb y mode. T o select an option, highlight it and press . Abbrev . Dial to dial the phone number in your Contacts list that ends with the appropriate digits you entered.
Answer ing Calls T o answer an incoming call with the flip open: 1. Make sure your phone is on. (If your phone is of f, incoming calls go to voicemail.) 2. Press or to answer an incoming call. (Depending on your phone’s settings, you may also answ er incoming calls by opening the phone or by pressing any number key .
The following options ar e also displayed by pressing Options (right softkey). T o select an option, highlight it and press . Call Guard to answer the call when y ou are in roaming mode. See page 75 f or setting Call Guard. Answer to answ er the call.
T o resume the call: Press Answer (left softkey) or . -or- Press Options (right softkey), highlight Answer or Answer:Speaker and press . Note: Answer on Hold is not available in analog areas. Ending a Call T o disconnect a call when you are finished: With the Flip open: Close the phone or press .
Changing the Ring er V olume T o change the r inger volume, press the Side V olume ke y when the phone is open and in standby mode. Note: T o change the ringer volume from the main menu, see “Adjusting the Phone’ s V olume Settings” on page 39.
Missed Call Notification When an incoming call is not answ ered, the Missed Call log and the icon are display ed on your screen. T o call the Missed Call entry: Press or . T ip: If you have two or more notifications, the event list will appear . T o erase the Missed Call log: Press Dismiss (right softkey).
T o select Emergency mode options: 1. Press during a 911 call. 2. Press Options (right softkey). Call 911 to call 911. Call 911:Speaker to call 911 in speakerphone mode. Exit Emergency to e xit Emergency mode. 3. Select an option and press .
End-of-Call Options T o display the following options, press Options (r ight softkey) within 10 seconds after disconnecting a call. T o select an option, highlight it and press . Call Again to dial the phone number . Call:Speaker On to dial the phone number in speakerphone mode.
Finding a Phone Number Y ou can searc h Contacts list entries for phone numbers that contain a specific string of number s. T o find a phone number: 1. Enter the last four or more dig its of the number and press Options (right softke y). (The more numbers you enter , the more specific the search becomes.
Making Inter national Calls With Plus Code Dialing Y our phone’ s Plus Code Dialing feature can automatically dial the international access code when you are trav eling outside of the United States. (Not available in some areas.) T o make a call using Plus Code Dialing: 1.
Using Speed Dialing With this f eature, you can dial y our favorite entries using one ke y press for locations 2-9. (See “ Assigning Speed Dial Number s” on pa ge 91.) T o use speed dial for v oice calls: From standby mode, press and hold the appropriate key for approximately tw o seconds.
Ent er ing T ext Selecting a Char acter Input Mode Y our Sprint PCS Vision Phone provides convenient ways to enter words, letter s, punctuation, and numbers whene ver you are prompted to enter te xt (for example, when adding a Contacts entr y or when sending email messages).
Enter ing Char acters Using T9 T ext Input T9 T ext Input lets you enter te xt in your Spr int PCS V ision Phone by pressing ke ys just once per letter . (T o select the T9 W ord mode when entering text, see “Selecting a Character Input Mode” on the previous page.
Enter ing Char acters by T apping the Ke ypad T o enter characters by tapping the ke ypad, select the Alphabet mode (see “Selecting a Character Input Mode” on page 32). Press the corresponding key repeatedly until the desired char acter appears. By default, the first letter of an entr y is capitalized and following letters are lowercase.

Sound Settings Ringer T ypes Ringer types help you identify incoming calls and messa ges. Y ou can assign ringer types to individual Contacts entries, types of calls, and types of messages. Preprogrammed Ringers include a variety of standard r inger types and familiar music.

Silence All There may be times when you need to silence your phone entirely . The phone’ s Silence All option allows you to mute all sounds without turning your phone off. T o activat e Silence All: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .
Displa y Settings Changing the T ext Greeting The te xt greeting can be up to fifteen char acter s and is displayed on your phone’s screen in standby mode. Y ou may choose to display a custom greeting or you may display “Spr int” on the phone’ s screen.
Changing the Bac klight Time Length The backlight setting lets you select how long the display screen and keypad are backlit after any ke y press is made. T o change the Main LCD or Sub LCD backlight setting: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .

Changing the Displa y f or Ar ea Name This featur e enables you to show the area of the phone number you are calling or are called from when the number is not registered in your Contacts list. For example, a call to or from 213-555-5555 will display “California.
Changing the Displa y f or Standby Mode This featur e enables you to select a variety of items to display in standby mode. T o set your standby display: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Standby Display and press .
Changing the Scr een Sav er Y our new Spr int PCS Phone offers you the option of displaying a screen sav er while in standb y mode. T o chang e the screen sa ver: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press .
Changing the Displa y f or My Buddy This featur e enables you to see a funny animation for 15 seconds on the Main LCD by opening the f lip. T o activat e or deactivat e My Buddy: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press .
Changing the F ont Siz e Y ou can chang e the font size settings for the message and browser . T o change the font size: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Font Size and press . 5. Select either Messaging or Browser and press .
Setting Retur n to Standby Mode This featur e allows you to select the way to return to standby mode. T o set this feat ure: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Return to Idle and press .
Location Settings Y our Sprint PCS Vision Phone is equipped with a Location feature for use in connection with location-based ser vices that may be available in the future. The Location feature allows the network to detect your position. T urning Location of f will hide your location from everyone e xcept 911.
Air plane Mode Airplane Mode allows you to use many of your phone’ s features, such as Games, V oice Recorder , etc., when you are in an airplane or in any other area where making or receiving calls or data is prohibited. When your phone is in Airplane Mode, it cannot send or receive any calls or access online information.
T TY Use With Spr int PCS Service A TTY (also known as a TDD or T e xt T elephone) is a telecommunications device that allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing, or who have speech or language disabilities, to communicate by telephone. Y our phone is compatible with select TTY devices.
Phone Setup Options Shortcut Y our phone offers you the option of assigning a shor tcut key to a fav or ite or often-used function. Pressing the navigation key to the left in standby mode will launch your personally designated shortcut. T o assign your shortcut ke y: 1.
A ut o Answer Mode Y ou may set your phone to automatically pick up incoming calls in speakerphone mode or when connected to an optional hands-free car kit and headset. T o set A uto Answer mode: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .
Setting the Open/Close Flip Option This featur e enables you to answer an incoming call b y opening the f lip or to end a call by closing the f lip. T o activat e the Open Flip feat ure: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .

Setting Abbreviat ed Dialing Abbr e viated Dialing is another form of speed dialing. It allows you to dial a number by enter ing 3-6 digits of any number in your Contacts Directory . If the dig its you enter do not match any stored Contacts entr y , your phone will automatically prepend the digits you specify .
Using the St ereo Headset Y our phone comes with a stereo headset for hands free operation. Set the headset mode to V oice Call or Ready Link and press the T urbo Button (the operation button) on the headset to activate useful functions. T o connect the stereo headset: Simply plug the headset into your phone’s headset jack.
Setting Message Notification Y ou can see an icon and/or a pop-up message notification when you receive a text messa ge or voicemail while you are in Spr int PCS Vision applications, browser mode, or voice calls. T o set message notification: 1. Press to access the main menu.
Setting a Callbac k Number With this feature, you can notify your recipients of your callback number with the te xt message. T o set the callback number: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Messaging and press . 4.

A ccessing the Secur ity Menu All of your phone’ s security settings are available through the Security menu. Y ou must enter your lock code to view the Security menu. T o access the Security menu: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .
Unlocking Y our Phone T o unlock your phone: 1. Press Unlock (left softkey). 2. Enter your lock code. Locking the Pict ur es and Videos Menu With this feature, you must enter your lock code when you access the Pictures and V ideos menu. T o lock the Pictur es menu: 1.
Changing the Lock Code T o change your lock code: 1. From the Secur ity Menu, select Others and press . 2. Select Change Lock and press . 3. Enter a new lock code (“1234” f or e xample). 4. Reenter the new code. Calling in Loc k Mode Y ou can place calls to 911, Spr int Customer Ser vice, and to your special numbers when in lock mode.
Using Special Numbers Special numbers are impor tant numbers that you have designated as being “always available. ” Y ou can receive calls from special number s even if your phone is locked. Y ou can save 3 special number s in addition to your Contacts entries (the same number may be in both directories).
Er asing All Do wnloads T o erase all data downloaded from the W eb: 1. From the Secur ity Menu, select Erase Download and press . 2. If you’ re sure you want to erase all data downloaded from the W eb, select Ye s and press . If you have assigned downloaded data, the function retur ns to its default setting.
Reset ting and Locking Y our Phone Thr ough SMS When your phone is lost or stolen, you can erase your impor tant personal information (such as Contacts entries, call histor y , and messages) and lock your phone b y sending a special formatted SMS message to your phone.
Secur ity Feat ures f or Spr int PCS Vision SM Enabling and Disabling Spr int PCS Vision Services Y ou can disable Sprint PCS Vision ser vices without tur ning off your phone; however , you will not have access to all Spr int PCS Vision services, including W eb and messaging.

Understanding Roaming Recognizing Icons on the Display Screen Y our phone’ s display screen always lets you know when you’ re of f the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network and whether your phone is operating in analog or digital mode. The following chart indicates what you’ ll see depending on where you’ re using your phone.
Roaming on Analog Networ ks When you roam on analog networ ks, you will experience a similar quality provided by other analog car rier s today . Although some featur es, such as Sprint PCS Vision, Sprint PCS Ready Link, and Sprint PCS V oice Command, will be unavailable, you can still make and receive calls and access voicemail.
Checking for V oicemail Messages While Roaming When you are roaming of f the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, you may not receive on-phone notification of new voicemail messa ges.
Contr olling Roaming Charg es Using Call Guard Y our phone has two ways of alerting you when you are roaming of f the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network: the onscreen roaming icon and Call Guard. Call Guard makes it easy to manage your roaming charges by requiring an extra step before you can place or answer a roaming call.

V iewing History Y ou’ll find the Call Histor y feature very helpful. The y are lists of the last 20 voice calls and the last 10 Ready Link calls that you placed, accepted, or missed.
Call History Options For additional information and options on a particular call, highlight a Call Histor y entr y and press Options (right softke y). Call to dial the phone number . Call:Speaker On to dial the phone number in speakerphone mode.
Sa ving a Phone Number Fr om Call History Y our Sprint PCS Vision Phone can store up to 500 phone numbers in up to 300 Contacts entries (an entr y may contain up to seven numbers). Each entr y’ s name can contain sixteen char acter s. T o save a phone number from Call History: 1.
Pr epending a Phone Number Fr om Call History If you need to place a call from Call Histor y and you happen to be outside your local area code, you can add the appropriate prefix by prepending the number . T o prepend a phone number from Call History: 1.

Displa ying the Contacts List Y ou can chang e the display view for the Contacts List. Y ou may choose to display a List view (the default setting) or you may display the list with picture ID . T o display your contacts list: Press the navigation key right.
Finding Contacts List Entr ies There are several ways to display your Contacts entries: b y name, b y speed dial number , b y Sprint PCS Ready Link List, and by voice tags. Follow the steps outlined in the sections below to display entr ies from the Contacts list menu.

Using A utomatic Speec h Recognition Y our Sprint PCS Vision Phone is equipped with an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) feature. This featur e allows you to make calls or use the phone’ s functions b y simply using your voice. All you have to do is to talk into the phone, and the phone will recognize your voice and complete tasks by itself.
Note: The speech recognition system will wait 7.5 seconds for you to respond to a prompt. After 7.5 seconds, the phone will display an error message and your command will be cancelled.
T o make a call by speaking a phone number: 1. Press and hold or to activate the Command menu. 2. Say “ Dial Number ” to your phone. 3. Say the dig its of the phone number using a natural voice. Shortcut: Y ou can also say “Dial Number” followed by the number you want to call.
