This section walks you through the necessary steps to unlock your phone, set up your v oicemail, and contact Qwest for assistance with your service.
Get ting Start ed Unlocking Y our Phone T o unlock your phone, follow these easy st eps: 1. Press to turn the phone on. 2. Press Unlock (left softkey). Note: T o select a softkey, press the softkey button directly below the softkey text that appears at the bottom left and bottom right of your phone’ s display screen.
Set ting Up Y our V oicemail All unansw ered calls to your wireless phone ar e automatically transf er red to y our voicemail, even if your phone is in use or turned off. Therefore, y ou will want to set up your voicemail and personal greeting as soon as y our phone is activated.
A ccount P asswords As a Qwest customer , you enjoy unlimited access to your personal account information, your v oicemail account, and your Sprint PCS Vision account. T o ensure that no one else has access to your information, you will need to cr eate passwords to pr otect your privacy .

V iewing the Display Scr een Y our phone’s displa y screen provides a wealth of inf or mation about your phone’ s status and options. This list identifies the symbols you’ ll see on your phone’ s display scr een: shows your current signal strength.
shows the level of y our batter y charge. The more black y ou see, the more pow er you have left. shows your battery is charging. indicates you hav e menus to scroll (in four directions). indicates volume level 4 or 1 and vibr ate feature are set. indicates a beep sound is set at level 1.
F eatur es of Y our Wir eless Phone Congratulations on the pur chase of your Sany o SCP-7400 Phone. This phone is lightweight, easy-to-use and reliab le, and it also of f er s many significant featur es and ser vice options.
Changing the F aceplat e Removing and Installing the F aceplat e 䊳 T o remove, press the f aceplate release latch up and remov e the faceplate from the phone at a 45-deg ree angle. Note: Be careful not to damage your fingernail when you remove the faceplate.
T ur ning Y our Phone On and Of f T ur ning Y our Phone On T o tur n your phone on: 䊳 Press . Once your phone is on, it displa ys “Looking for ser vice... ” which indicates that your phone is searc hing for a signal. When your phone finds a signal, it automatically enters standby mode – the phone’ s idle state.
Using Y our Phone ’ s Batt ery and Charger Batt ery Capacity Y our wireless phone is equipped with a Lithium Ion (LiIon) batter y . It allows you to r echarge your battery before it is full y drained. The batter y provides up to 3.5 hours of continuous digital talk time (1.
Charging the Bat tery Y our phone’s LiIon battery is recharg eable and should be char g e d a s soon as possible so you can begin using y our phone. K eeping track of your battery’ s charge is important. If your batter y level becomes too low , your phone automatically turns off and you will lose all the information you w ere just working on.
Displa ying Y our Phone Number Just in case y ou forget y our phone number , your wir eless phone can remind you. T o display your phone number: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Contacts and press . 3. Select My Phone# and press . Note: T o access the phone’ s main menu, press from standby mode.
Making and Answer ing Calls Making Calls Placing a call from your wir eless phone is as easy as making a call from any land line phone. Just enter the number and pr ess and you’ re on your wa y to clear calls. T o place a call using your ke ypad: 1.
Dialing Options Dialing options are display ed when you press Options (right softkey) after entering number s in the phone’ s standby mode. T o select an option, highlight it and press . 䢇 Abbrev . Dial to dial the phone number in your Contacts list that ends with the appropriate digits you entered.
Answer ing Calls T o answer an incoming call with the flip open: 1. Make sure your phone is on. (If your phone is off, incoming calls go to v oicemail.) 2. Press or to answer an incoming call. (Depending on your phone’ s settings, you ma y also answer incoming calls by opening the phone or by pressing any number key .
The following options ar e also displayed by pressing Options (right softkey). T o select an option, highlight it and press . 䢇 Call Guard to answ er the call when you are in roaming mode. See page 80 f or setting Call Guard. 䢇 Answer to answ er the call.
Ending a Call T o disconnect a call when you are finished: With the Flip open: 䊳 Close the phone or press . With the Flip closed: 䊳 Press and hold . Note: If the setting for Close Flip is not set to “End,” closing the phone will not end the call.
Changing the Ringer V olume T o change the ringer v olume, press the Side V olume ke y when the phone is open and in standby mode. Note: T o change the ringer volume from the main menu, see “Adjusting the Phone’ s V olume Settings” on page 41.
Missed Call Notification When an incoming call is not answ ered, the Missed Call log and the icon are display ed on your screen. T o call the Missed Call entry: 䊳 Press or . T ip: If you have two or more notifications, the event list will appear . T o erase the Missed Call log: 䊳 Press Dismiss (right softke y).
T o display Emerg ency mode options: 1. Press during a 911 call. 2. Press Options (right softke y). 䡲 Call 911 to call 911. 䡲 Call 911:Speaker to call 911 in speakerphone mode. 䡲 Exit Emergency to exit Emerg ency mode. 3. Select an option and press .
End-of-Call Options T o display the following options, pr ess Options (r ight softkey) within 10 seconds after disconnecting a call. T o select an option, highlight it and press . 䢇 Call Again to dial the phone number . 䢇 Call:Speaker On to dial the phone number in speakerphone mode.
Finding a Phone Number Y ou can search Contacts list entries for phone numbers that contain a specific string of numbers. T o find a phone number: 1. Enter the last four or mor e dig its of the number and pr ess Options (right softke y). (The more numbers you enter , the more specific the searc h becomes.
Making Inter national Calls With Plus Code Dialing Y our phone’s Plus Code Dialing f eature can automatically dial the international access code when you are trav eling outside of the United States. T o make a call using Plus Code Dialing: 1. From standby mode, press and hold until a “+” sign appears on the phone display .
Using Speed Dialing With this f eature, you can dial y our favorite entries using one ke y pr ess for locations 2-9. (See “ Assigning Speed Dial Number s” on pa g e 96.) T o use speed dial for voice calls: 䊳 From standby mode, press and hold the appropriate key for approximately tw o seconds.
Ent er ing T ext Selecting a Charact er Input Mode Y our phone provides convenient ways to enter w ords, letters, punctuation, and numbers whenever you are prompted to enter te xt (for e xample, when adding a Contacts entr y or when sending email messages).
Enter ing Charact ers Using T9 T ext Input T9 T ext Input lets you enter te xt in your SCP-7400 by pressing keys just once per letter . (T o select the T9 W ord mode when entering text, see “Selecting a Character Input Mode” on pa g e 32.
Enter ing Charact ers by T apping the K eypad T o enter characters by tapping the ke ypad, select the Alphabet mode (see “Selecting a Character Input Mode” on pa g e 32). Press the corresponding key repeatedly until the desired c haracter appear s.
Enter ing Symbols, Numbers, Pr eset Suffix es, Smileys, and Emoticons T o enter symbols: 1. In a te xt entr y field, press Mode (right softkey). 2. Highlight SYMBOL and press . 3. Highlight the line that includes your desir ed symbol. 4. Press the corresponding key (1-8) with each symbol.

Sound Set tings Ringer T ypes Ringer types help y ou identify incoming calls and messa g es. Y ou can assign ringer types to individual Contacts entries, types of calls, and types of messages. 䢇 Preprogrammed Ringers include a variety of standard ringer types and familiar music.
Selecting Ringer T ypes f or Ready Link Calls T o select a ring er type for Ready Link calls: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Sounds and press . 4. Select Ringer T ype and press . 5. Select Ready Link and press .
Selecting a T one Length Longer tone lengths ma y be better for tone recognition when dialing voicemail or other automated systems. T o select a tone length: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Sounds and press .

T o adjust the earpiece or speak er volume: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Sounds and press . 4. Select Receiver Vol. and press . 5. Alert Notification Y our phone can aler t you with an audib le tone when you chang e service areas, once a minute during a voice call, for incoming or missed Ready Link calls, or when a call has been connected. T o set alerts: 1. Press to access the main menu.
Silence All There may be times when y ou need to silence your phone entirel y . The phone’ s Silence All option allows you to mute all sounds without turning your phone off. T o activat e Silence All: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .
Displa y Settings Changing the T ext Gr eeting The te xt greeting can be up to fifteen char acter s and is display ed on your phone’ s screen in standby mode. Y ou may choose to displa y a custom greeting or y ou may display the phone’ s default g reeting on the screen.
Changing the Backlight Time Length The backlight setting lets you select ho w long the display screen and keypad are backlit after any key press is made. T o change the Main LCD or Sub LCD bac klight setting: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .
Changing the Display Scr een Animation Y our new wireless phone offers options for what you see on the display screen during various phone functions. T o change the animation displa y: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3.
Changing the Display f or Ar ea Name This featur e ena b les you to show the area of the phone number y ou are calling or are called from when the n umber is not registered in your Contacts list. For e xample, a call to or from 213-555-5555 will display “Calif or nia.
Changing the Display f or Standby Mode This featur e ena b les you to select a variety of items to display in standby mode. T o set your standby displa y: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4.

Changing the Font Siz e Y ou can change the f ont size settings for the message notification and browser . T o change the f ont size: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Font Size and press .
Location Set tings Y our Sanyo SCP-7400 Phone is equipped with a Location featur e for use in connection with location-based services that may be available in the future. The Location featur e allows the network to detect y our position. T urning Location of f will hide y our location from ever yone e xcept 911.
Air plane Mode Airplane Mode allows you to use man y of your phone’ s features, suc h as Games, V oice Memos, etc., when you are in an airplane or in any other area where making or r eceiving calls or data is prohibited. When your phone is in Airplane Mode, it cannot send or receiv e any calls or access online information.
TTY U se A TTY (also known as a TDD or T ext T elephone) is a telecommunications device that allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing, or who have speec h or langua g e disabilities, to communicate by telephone. Y our phone is compatible with select TTY devices.
Phone Setup Options Shortcut Y our phone of f er s you the option of assigning a shortcut key to a fav or ite or often-used function. Pressing the navigation key to the left in standby mode will launch your personally designated shortcut. T o assign your shortcut k ey: 1.
A ut o Answer Mode Y ou may set your phone to automatically pic k up incoming calls in speakerphone mode or when connected to an optional hands-free car kit and headset (sold separately). T o set A uto Answer mode: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2.

Setting Abbr eviat ed Dialing Abbr e viated Dialing is another f or m of speed dialing. It allows you to dial a number by entering 3-6 digits of any number in your Contacts Directory . If the dig its y ou enter do not match any stored Contacts entr y , your phone will automatically pr epend the dig its y ou specify .
Setting the Meeting Mode This featur e allows you to hold an incoming call when you cannot answ er immediately . T o set the Meeting mode: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Others and press . 4. Select Meeting Mode and press .
Headset Mode This featur e allows you hands-free phone use. Set the headset mode to V oice Call or Ready Link and press the T urbo Button (the operation button) on the headset to activate useful functions. T o set headset mode: 1. Press to access the main menu.
Setting Ret ur n to Standb y Mode This featur e allows you to select the way to r etur n to standby mode. T o set this feat ure: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Return to Idle and press .
Setting Messag e Notification Y ou can see an icon and/or a pop-up messa g e notification when you receive a te xt message or v oicemail while you are in Sprint PCS Vision applications, browser mode, or voice calls. T o set message notification: 1. Press to access the main menu.
Setting a Callbac k Number With this f eature, you can notify y our recipients of your callback number with the te xt messa g e. T o set the callback number: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Messaging and press .

Locking Ready Link Calls With this f eature, you will not be able to make or r eceive Ready Link calls. T o lock the Ready Link calls: 1. From the Security Menu (see “ Accessing the Secur ity Menu” on page 68), select Others and press . 2. Select Lock Services and press .
Restr icting Calls There may be occasions when y ou want to limit the numbers your phone can call or from which it can r eceive calls. Y ou can use the Restrict Calls setting to do just that. (The Restr ict Calls setting does not apply to 911.) T o restr ict calls: 1.
Using Special Numbers Special numbers are important number s that y ou have designated as being “always av ailable. ” Y ou can call and receive calls from special numbers even if your phone is locked. Y ou can save three special numbers in addition to your Contacts entries (the same number may be in both directories).
Er asing the Contacts Directory Y ou can quickly and easily er ase all of the contents of your Contacts Directory . T o erase all the names and phone numbers in your Contacts Dir ectory: 1. From the Security Menu display (see “ Accessing the Secur ity Menu” on pa g e 68), select Erase Ph.
Reset ting Y our Pictur es Account This option resets your authentication ID f or your Sprint PCS Picture Mail account. T o reset your pict ures account: 1. From the Security Menu display (see “ Accessing the Secur ity Menu” on pa g e 68), select Reset Pictures and press .
Secur ity F eatur es for Spr int PCS Vision SM Enabling and Disabling Spr int PCS Vision Services Y ou can disa b le Spr int PCS V ision ser vices without turning of f y our phone; howev er , you will not hav e access to all Spr int PCS V ision services, including W eb and Email.

Understanding Roaming Recognizing Icons on the Display Scr een Y our phone’s displa y screen always lets y ou know when you’ re off the networ k provided to you and whether your phone is oper ating in analog or digital mode. The following c har t indicates what you’ ll see depending on where you’ re using your phone.
Roaming on Analog Networ ks When you roam on analog netw orks, you will e xper ience a similar quality provided by other analog carr iers today . Although some featur es, such as Sprint PCS Vision and Ready Link, will be unavailable, y ou can still make and receive calls and access voicemail.
Checking f or V oicemail Messages While Roaming When you are r oaming of f the networ k provided to you, you ma y not receive on-phone notif ication of new voicemail messages.
Using Call Guar d Y our phone has two ways of alerting you when you ar e roaming of f the networ k provided to you: the onscreen roaming icon and Call Guard. Call Guard makes it easy to manage your roaming c harges by requiring an extr a step before y ou can place or answer a roaming call.

Menu Na vigation The navigation key on your wireless phone allows y ou to scroll through menus quickl y and easily . The scroll bar at the r ight of the menu keeps track of y our position in the menu at all times. T o navigate through a menu, simply press the na vigation key up or down.

V iewing Hist ory Y ou’ll find the Call History feature v er y helpful. The y ar e lists of the last 20 voice calls and the last 10 Read y Link calls that you placed, accepted, or missed.

Using A utomatic Speec h Recognition Y our Sanyo SCP-7400 Phone is equipped with an A utomatic Speech Recognition (ASR) featur e. This featur e allows you to make calls or use the phone’ s functions by simply using your v oice. All you hav e to do is to talk into the phone, and the phone will recognize your v oice and complete tasks by itself.
Note: The speech recognition system will wait 7.5 seconds for you to respond to a prompt. After 7.5 seconds, the phone will display an error message and your command will be cancelled.
T o make a call by speaking a phone number: 1. Press and hold or to activate the Command menu. 2. Say “Dial Number” to your phone. 3. Say the digits of the phone number using a natural v oice. Shortcut: Y ou can also say “Dial Number” followed by the number you want to call.
