Barracuda ES.2 SAS Produc t Manual, Rev. E 13 4.4 Prefetch/multi-segmented cache control The drive provides a prefetch (read look-a head) and mu lti-seg mented cache control al gorithms that in many cases can enhance system performance. Cache refers to the drive buf fer stora ge space when it is used in cache operations.
14 Barracuda ES.2 SAS Pr oduct M anual, Rev. E If read caching is enabled (RCD=0), th en data written to t he med ium is reta ined in the cache to be m ade avail- able for fu ture read cache hit s. The sam e buf fer sp ace and segment ation is used a s set up for read functions.
Barracuda ES.2 SAS Produc t Manual, Rev. E 15 5.0 Reliability specifications The following reliability specifications assume correct host and drive operational interfac e, including all inter- face timings, power supply volt ages, environment al requirements and drive mou nting const raints.
16 Barracuda ES.2 SAS Pr oduct M anual, Rev. E 5.1.3 Seek errors A seek error is defined as a failure of the drive to posi tion the heads to the addr essed track. After detecting an initial seek error , the drive automatically perfor ms an er ror recovery proce ss.
Barracuda ES.2 SAS Produc t Manual, Rev. E 17 5.2.4 S.M.A.R.T . S.M.A.R.T . is an acronym for Self-Monitoring Analysis and Re porting T e chnology . This technology is intended to recognize conditions.
18 Barracuda ES.2 SAS Pr oduct M anual, Rev. E Error rate is the number of er rors per operation . The algori thm that S.M.A.R.T . uses to record rates of error is to set thresholds for the number of errors and their interval .
Barracuda ES.2 SAS Produc t Manual, Rev. E 19 The most thorough op tion is the extended test tha t perf orms various tests on the drive a nd scans every lo gical block address (LBA) of the drive.
20 Barracuda ES.2 SAS Pr oduct M anual, Rev. E Each test consists of three segment s: an electrical te st segment, a servo test segmen t, and a re ad/verify s can segment. Short test (Function Cod e: 001b) The purpose of the sh ort test is to pr ovide a time-limited test that test s as much of the drive as possible within 120 seconds.
