Getting Started 1-1 GETTING ST AR TED 1 The Monar ch 9416 XL® is a des ktop thermal direct prin ter. It c an print labels, tags or receipt s (with or witho ut bar code s) in peel mode (on e label at a time) or non-peel mode (l abels in st rips).
Unpacking the Printer Keep all packaging materi al in case you need to mo ve or return the printer. After you unpack the printer, you should have a ♦ 9416 prin ter ♦ Power Supply ♦ Quick Reference ♦ CD-ROM that contain s software and manuals. If any items are missing, cont act Monarch f or replacement p arts.
Connecting the Communication Cable Before the printer can ac cept print jobs from the host, yo u must ♦ connect t he communic ation cable t o the printe r and the host. ♦ set the commu nication values on the printer t o match thos e at the host (only required if yo u are using the serial port).
USB Port The print er has a US B (Universal Ser ial Bus) Versio n 2.0 communication port. Reading the I ndicator Light The indicator ligh t monitors the printer's stat us. Feed Button Indicator Light Indicator Light Description GREEN Printer is on and re ady to use.

Loading Supply for Non-Peel Mode The printer can print on thermal-di rect labels and tags. Make sure the black mark/die cut sensor is set correctl y for your supp ly type.
5. Sli de a roll of suppl y onto the supp ly holder. Note: If the core diame ter on your roll of supply is 1 inch in diameter, remov e the 1.5-inch su pply core adap ters from t he supply g uide holders . 6. Sli de the suppl y holder guide back on to the end of the suppl y holder.
8. T urn the dial to adjust the supply guides to thei r widest positi on. Supply Guides 9. F eed the su pply, printi ng side up, under the supply gu ides and o ver the pl aten roller.
13. Press the FEED butto n. The i ndicator ligh t should b e GREEN. 14. Calibrate th e supply, if necess ary. See “ Calib rating the Supp ly ,” for more informatio n. Loading Labels for Peel Mode Peel mode sepa rates the label from the backing paper while printing.
4. Re move the s upply holder gu ide from one end of th e supply hold er. (The suppl y holder is normally attached with a line to the insi de of the printe r, not free- standing as shown be low. Do n ot cut the line.) 5. Sli de a roll of labels ont o the supp ly holder.
Important : Tuck the plastic line attaching th e supply hold er to the printer down ou t of the way of the supply holde r and supply holde r guides. Otherwise, the plastic line may wra p around the supply holder or get caught on the supply holder guides.
14. Push the pe el door closed until it locks . 15. Close th e cover until it loc ks in place. 16. Press the FEED butto n. A label separates from the backing paper . Remove the pee led label and another la bel prints. Note: Hold the leading edge of peeled labels when printi ng on supp ly longer t han six inches.
7. Turn the dial to ad just the int ernal supp ly guides t o their wide st position . 8. F eed the fa n-fold labels th rough the supply guides, over the su pply holde r and over the plat en roller. Dial Supply Guides 9. Press the fan-fold labels un der the supply guides.
Adjusting the Black Mark/Die Cut Sen sor The print er has a b lack mark/ die cut se nsor, which it uses to sense and prop erly calibrate suppli es. Black mark supply has sense marks (black marks) on the back of them. Die cut suppl y does not have any black ma rks.

Cleaning the Printhead Clean the p rinthead when ever you notic e a declin e in print quality, or afte r using three rolls of supply. Note: You must turn the printe r’s power off before cleaning the printhea d. If you need to clean the print head during a print job, you may lose yo ur data when you turn off the pr inter.
Cleaning the Platen Roller and Printer To clean the p laten roller : 1. T urn off the printe r. 2. Press the cover relea se levers towards the front of th e printer to releas e the cover. 3. Lift open the cover. 5. Moisten a cotton sw ab with isopropyl alco hol and run th e cotton swab ac ross the platen roller.

Problem Action Verify that supply is loaded correctly. See Chapter 2 , “ Loading Supplies and Printing ,” for more inform ation. Clean the printhead. See " Cleaning the Printhead " in Ch apter 3 , for more inform ation. Printing is faded or poor quality.
The second label shows the m odel number, software ver sion, commun ication settings, sp eed, contras t, gap sensor se tting, label le ngth, and total number o f inches printed. The third label show s network parame ters when the printer is connect ed to the network.
