A small amount of ozone is produced wit hin the unit d uring operation. The emission level is insufficient to cause any health hazard .
6 INTR ODUCTION Using the manual This machine has been designed to provide convenient copying features in a minimum amount of office spa ce and with ma ximum operational ease. To get full use of all machine features, be sure to famili arize yourse lf with this manual and the machine.
7 MAIN FEA TURES High-speed laser copying First-copy time* 1 at 300 dpi* 2 is only 9.6 seconds. Copying speed is 15 copies per minute. This is ideal for business use and provide s a big boost to workplace productivity. * 1 First-copy time may vary depending on the power-supply voltage , ambient temperature, and other operating condi tions.
8 Laser printer function • Printer functio n The accompanying p rinter driver can be installed to enable use of the machi ne as a printer. • Network printer fun ction A LAN connector is provided as a standard feature that allows the machine to be used as a netwo rk printer.

PREP ARA TIONS 10 Operation panel [MODE SELECT] key / Mode indicators Press this key to select the mode. The indicator of the selecte d mode lights (copy, printer, scanner mode indicators). Display This shows messages i ndicating th e machine status and any probl ems that occur, as well as user programs and function setting menu s.
11 1 PREP ARA TIONS [ZOOM] key Press to select an enlargeme nt or reduction ratio. To select a preset ratio setting, press the [ZOOM] key and select the desired preset ratio.
12 CHECKING P A CKED COMPONENTS AND AC C E S S O R I E S Open the carton and check if the following components an d accessories are included. If anything is missing or damaged, contac t your authorized serv ice representa tive.
13 1 PREP ARING THE MA CHINE FOR INST ALLA TION 1 Be sure to hold the handle s on both sides of the machine to unpack the machine and carry it to th e installation location. 2 Remove all pieces of tape shown in the illustration below and then open the RSPF and remove the protect ive materials.
14 INST ALLING THE TD CARTRIDGE 1 Open the bypass tr ay, and then ope n the sid e cover. 2 Press gently on both sides of the front cove r to open the cover. 3 Remove the TD cartridg e from the bag. Remove the prot ective paper. Hold the cartridge on both sides and sha ke it horizontally four or five time s.
15 1 PREP ARA TIONS 5 Close the front cover and then the side cover by pressing the round projections near the side cover open but ton. 6 Ensure that th e power switch of the unit is in th e OFF position. Insert the attac hed power cord into the pow er cord socket at the rear of the unit.
16 PO WER ON AND OFF The power switch is l ocated on the le ft side of the machine. Power on Turn the power switch to th e "ON" position. The ready indicator will light up and other indicators which show the initi al settings of the display will also light up to indicate the ready condition.
17 1 PREP ARA TIONS About the scan he ad The scan head lamp remains on constantly when the machine is in the ready condition (when the ready indicator is ill uminated). The machine adj usts the scan head lamp p eriod ically to maintain copying quality.
18 2 Chapter 2 The tray location indicator will blin k when there is no paper in the selected paper tray, or when the selected paper tray is not installed or is improperly installed. PA P E R For best results, use only SHARP recommended paper. * 1 The number of sh eets of paper t hat can be loade d varies depending on the weight of the paper.
LO ADING P APE R 19 2 Special papers Follow these guidel ines when using special papers. ● Use SHARP recommended tr ansparency film and la bel sheets.
LO ADING P APER 20 4 Fan the paper and insert it into the tray. Make sure tha t the edges go under the cor ner hooks. 5 Gently push the paper tray bac k into the machine. • Do not load paper ab ove the maximum h eight line ( ). Exceeding the line wi ll cause a paper misfeed.
21 2 BYP ASS FEED (inc luding special paper) The bypass tray can be used to feed st andard paper, transparency film, labels, envelopes, and other special purpose pap er. Important points when insert ing paper in the bypass tray Up to 50 sheets of standard copy paper c an be inserted in the b ypass tray.
LO ADING P APER 22 Loading paper in the bypass tray 1 Open the bypass tr ay and extend the tray . 2 Set the bypass tray pap er guides to the paper width. Insert the paper (print face do wn) all the way int o the bypass tray . 3 Press the [TRAY SELECT] key ( ) to select the bypass tray.
23 2 CHANGING A TRA Y'S P APER SIZE SETTING Follow these steps to change a tray's pap er size setting. 1 Press the [MENU] key. Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) unti l "PAPER SIZE" appears, and then pres s the [OK] key. 2 Press th e [OK] key to select the tray .
24 3 Chapter 3 This chapter ex plains basic copyi ng functions. NORMAL COPYING Using the document glass 1 Open the RSPF, and place the original face down on the document glass. [How to place the original] Align the original with the origina l scale and the centering ( ) mark.
MAKING COP IES 25 3 Using the RSPF 1 Make sure that an orig inal has not been lef t on the document glass. 2 Adjust the origi nal guides to the si ze of the originals. 3 Set the original(s ) face up in the document fe eder tray. The RSPF indicator on the operation panel will light up.
MAKING COPIES 26 Originals that cannot be used in the RSPF The following origin als cannot be used. These may cause misfeeds or smudg ing and unclear images. • T ransparencies, tracing paper , other transpare nt or translucent paper , and photographs.
MAKING COP IES 27 3 Setting the number of copies Press the numeric keys to set the number of copies. The set number of copies ap pears in the display. A maxi mum of 99 copies can be set. If you wish to make only a single copy, copying is possible with the di splay showing "0".
28 MAKING A COPY D ARKER OR LIGHTER Automatic exp osure adjustment is initi a lly enabled. This function au tomatically adjusts the copy image according to the origin al being copied. If you wish to select the exposure level yourself, follow the steps below.
29 3 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM Copies can be reduced down to 25% or enlarged u p to 400%. (When the RSPF is being used, the zoom copy ratio range is 50% to 200%.) The [ZOOM] key can be pressed to quickly se lect a ratio from among eight preset ratios .
30 4 Chapter 4 A UT OMA TIC TW O-SIDED COPYING Two originals can be automatically copi ed ont o both sides of a single sheet of paper. When the RSPF is used, two-sided copies of two-sided originals can easily be made.
CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 31 4 Using the document glass 1 Place the original that you wish to copy onto the front side of the paper on the document glass and close t he RSPF. 2 Press the [2-SI DED COPY () ] key until "1 TO 2" appears, and then press the [OK] key.

35 4 COPYING MUL TIPLE ORIGINALS ONT O A SINGLE SHEET OF P APER (2 IN 1 copy) Multiple originals can be copied onto a sing le sheet of paper in a selected layout pattern. This function is convenient for compiling multi-pa ge reference materials into a compact format, or for providing an overview of all page s of a document on a single page.

38 CREA TING MARGINS WHEN COPYING (Margin shift) The margin shift function is used to automa tically shift the text or image or the copy paper approximately 10 mm. As shown below, LONG EDGE or SHORT EDGE can be selected. 1 Place the orig inal(s). 2 Press th e [E-SORT/ SP.

41 5 BEFORE INST ALLA TION Hardware and software requirements Check the following hardware and software requ irements in order to install the software. * 1 The machine's USB connector wil l transfer data at the speed spec ified by the USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) only i f the Microsoft USB 2.
42 INST ALLING THE SOFTW ARE Using the machine with a USB connection 1 The USB cable must not be conn ected to the machine. Ma ke sure that the cable is not connected bef ore proceeding.
SET UP THE SOFTW ARE 43 5 7 To install all of the software, c lick the "Standard" bu tton. To install particula r packages, clic k the "Custom" button. If you selected "Custom", go to step 9. 8 Read the message in the "Welco me" window and t hen click the "Next" butt on.
SET UP THE SOFTW ARE 44 11 The files required for installation of the MFP drive r are copied (if "MFP Driv er" was selec ted). Follow the on-screen instructio ns. When "The installation of the SHARP softwa re is complete" appears, click the "OK" button.

SET UP THE SOFTW ARE 47 5 1 Insert the cable into the USB connector on the machine. 2 Insert the ot her end of the cable into your compu ter's USB port. Using the machine as a network printer 1 Insert the LAN cabl e into the LAN connector on the machine.

For the model name of your machine, see t he operation panel on t he machine. 15 Select whether or not you wish the printer to be your default printer and click t he "Next" button.

SET UP THE SOFTW ARE 54 8 For the port to be used, select the machin e set as a shared prin ter, and clic k the "Next" butt on. You can also click the "Add Network Port" button and select the printe r to be sh ared (the machine) by browsing the network in the window that appears.
55 5 SETTING UP BUTT ON MANA GER Button Manager is a software program th at works with the scanner driver to enable scanning from the machine. To scan using the machi ne, Button Mana ger mu st be linked with the scan menu on the machine. Follow the steps below to link Button Mana ger to scanner events.
SET UP THE SOFTW ARE 56 5 Select "St art this program" and then select "Sharp Button Manager B" from the pull-down menu. 6 Click the "Apply" button. 7 Repeat Steps 4 throug h 6 to link Button Manager to "SC2: " through "SC6:".
SET UP THE SOFTW ARE 57 5 Windows 98/Me/2000 1 click the "Start" but ton, select "Setti ngs", and then clic k "Control Pa nel". 2 Double-clic k the "Scanners and Cameras" i con. 3 Select "SHARP AL-XXXX" and cl ick the "Properties" button.

59 6 Chapter 6 6 The machine includes a USB co nnector and a LAN c onnector as sta ndard equipme nt. When the USB connector is used, the pr inte r and scanner functions can be used. B ASIC PROCEDURE FOR PRINTING The basic procedu re for printing is explained in the fol lowing. To use conve nient printer functions, see the "Online Manual" or the printer drive r help file.
61 6 USING THE SCANNER MODE The procedure for placing the original is the same as for copying. See "NOR MAL COPYING" (p.24). SCANNING USING THE KE YS ON THE MA CHINE When scanning is perform.
PRINTER/SCANNER FUNCTIONS 62 Button Manager scan menu For information on Button Manager settings, see the Button Manager help file. The names in the Button Manager menu ("xxxx" in "SC1:xxxx", etc.) can be changed. See the online manual.
63 6 HO W T O USE THE ONLINE MANU AL The online manual provides deta iled instructions for operating the unit as a printer and scanner. It also provide s methods for dealing with printing or scanner problems. To access the online manual , your computer must have Acrobat Reader 5.
64 7 Chapter 7 The user settings allow you to customize machine settings to better meet your needs. USER PR OGRAMS The user settings consi st of the following items. To change the user program settings as explained in "SELECTING A SETTING FOR A USER PROGRAM" (p.
USER SETTINGS 65 7 4 AUTO SHUT-OFF TIME 1: 5 MIN. 2: 30 MIN. 3: 60 MIN. 4: 120 MIN. 5: 240 MIN. • This function au tomatically switches the machine to a st ate that consumes even less power than preheat mode if the set duration of time elapses without the machine being used when the power is on.
USER SETTINGS 66 9 AE/TEXT RESOLUTION 1: 300dpi 2: 600dpi • The copy resolution in auto and text mode is normally 300 dpi. If high-quality copie s are preferred, use this setting to change the resolution to 600 dpi.
USER SETTINGS 67 7 16 SOUND AT DEFAULT 1: ON 2: OFF • Use this to sound a beep when a base setting is selected. (p.70) 17 TONER SAVE MODE 1: ON 2: OFF • This mode reduces toner usage by about 10% when copying. Toner save mod e is effective when the exposure mode is AUTO or TEXT.
USER SETTINGS 68 Print mode * 1 The scanning spee d increases when the USB 2.0 mode is set to "HI-SPEED", however, the printing speed does not increase considerably.

77 8 PR OBLEMS DURING SETUP THE SOFTW ARE If the software does not install corre ctly, check the following items on your computer. To remove the software, see "Removing the so ftware" (p.
TROUBLESHOO TING AND MAINTENANC E 78 Plug and play screen does not appear (USB only) If the Plug and Play screen does not appear after you connect the machine to your computer with a USB cable and turn on th e ma chine, follow the steps below to verify that the USB port is available.
TROUBLESHOO TING AND MAINTENANC E 79 8 The MFP driver can not be correctly in stalled by Plug and Play (Windows 2000/XP) (USB only) In Windows 2000/XP, if the MFP driver cannot be correctly install ed.
80 MISFEED REMO V AL When a misfeed occurs, the error indicator blinks, " CLEAR PAPER JAM" appears in the display, and the machine stops opera ting. If a misfeed occurs when using the RSPF, "RETURN X ORIGINAL(S) START TO RESUME" will appear in the display.
TROUBLESHOO TING AND MAINTENANC E 81 8 A: Misfeed in t he paper feed area 1 Gently remove the mis fed paper from the paper feed area as shown in the illus tration. If the erro r indicator blin ks and the misfed paper is not visible in th e paper feed area , pull out the paper tray and remove the misfed paper.
TROUBLESHOO TING AND MAINTENANC E 82 2 Gently remove the misfed paper from under the fusing unit as shown in the illustrat ion. If the pa per cannot be removed, proceed to "C: Mi sfeed in the tran sport area".
TROUBLESHOO TING AND MAINTENANC E 83 8 4 Raise the fusin g unit release le ver, close the fron t cover and then close the side cover by pr essing the round projectio ns near the side co ver open button. The error indicator will go out and the ready indicator will light up.
TROUBLESHOO TING AND MAINTENANC E 84 (C) If the original does not move easily into the exit area, remove it in the direction of the arrow wh ile rotating the roller. "RETURN X ORIGINAL( S) START TO RESUME" will appear in the display. Retu rn the indicated numbe r of pages to the docume nt feeder tray.
85 8 TD CAR TRIDGE REPLA CEMENT When toner is low, the error indicator will light up and "TONER IS LOW" will appear in the display. For info rmation on purchasing a new TD cartridge, see "ABOUT SUPPLIES AND OPTIONS" (p.
86 DR UM CAR TRIDGE REPLA CEMENT The useful life of the drum cartridge is approximately 18 ,000 copies. When the internal counter reaches app roximately 17,000 copies, the error indicator will light up and "A DRUM CARTRIDGE WILL BE NEEDED SOON" will appear in the display.
TROUBLESHOO TING AND MAINTENANC E 87 8 5 Close the front cover a nd then the side cover by pressing th e round projections near the side cove r open button. The drum replacement required error indicator will go out and the ready indicator will light up.
88 CLEANING THE MA CHINE Proper care is esse ntial in order to get cl ea n, sharp copies. Be sure to take a few minutes to clea n the machin e on a regu lar basis. Cabinet Wipe the cabinet with a soft, clean cloth. Document glass and the b ack side of the RSPF Stains on the g lass, RSPF scanning win dow, co ver or RSPF roller will also be copied.
